Bayonet/Black Horse GC | Carmel Valley Ranch

Chris Balough won the championship, but Corey Eagle took home the bigger prize.
Balough, a 42-year-old E-Club East Bay member (pictured, above), shot a final-round 5-over 75 at Carmel Valley Ranch to edge Eagle by a shot in the 36-hole finals. In the opening round at Bayonet/Black Horse, shot a 4-over 76. Helping Balough nab the title was a clutch net birdie on the closing 18th.
“I feel like I didn’t play that well. It was difficult, I think for all of us,” Balough said. “I feel fortunate that I played in the last group with Corey. I’ve gotten to know him from the Tour and he helped ease the nerves a bit. I enjoy playing with him.”
Eagle, also an E-Club East Bay member, had both titles in his sights until a finishing double-bogey on the 18th. Regardless, his finish sewed up Player of the Year honors, as he’d finish with a total of 11,456 points. Balough was second at 10,632.
“It was really an up and down season,” said the 54-year-old Eagle, who played in all 30 Tour events. “I started poorly but got a couple of short game tips from my son and a friend. The tips turned my season around.”
Last year, Eagle’s son, Josh, won Player of the Year honors. The two started playing on the Tour in 2018 and have grown to love it.
“We play the Tour together. It’s turned into a father-son thing. My wife likes that we do it together. It gets us out of the house,” said Eagle with a laugh.
