A general interest got Pleasanton resident Drew Boyd hooked.
Following retirement after a 43-year career managing corporate training and customer service operations, Boyd one fateful day in 2009 was perusing the NCGA Golf magazine when he noticed an article on becoming an NCGA volunteer.
Boyd went on to apply, and a year later joined the tournament official corps. Eleven years on, the 77-year-old Philadelphia native not only is a volunteer, but has numerous times been the tournament chairperson for NCGA qualifiers and major championships.
“After I had retired, I was looking for something to still keep me busy,” Boyd said. “I’ve really enjoyed my time as an NCGA volunteer.”
Among the things that Boyd appreciates about being a volunteer is the camaraderie and unity.
“If I hadn’t become a tournament official, I wouldn’t have met the hundreds of people who I’ve not only met, but become friends with,” Boyd said. “I also enjoy helping the golfers and other officials with the Rules. I just really enjoy the job.”
The NCGA is always looking for volunteers. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please visit ncga.org/play/volunteer
