One of the unique advantages adidas has as a 75-year-old sportswear brand is, well, 75 years of innovation, product and design to pull from when creating the latest and greatest.
This archive acts as a foundation for a lot of what the brand does today. Leaning on legacy products and storied heritage is exactly what differentiates adidas footwear from a sea of sportswear giants.
Sometimes, it’s learning from past failures to create something totally new and innovative. Other times, as is the case with the COURSECUP, they mine this wealth of knowledge and product to create something with modern bones and storied DNA.
What difference does 46 years make?
Before adidas landed on the new COURSECUP, they dove deep into the archives and spent time with the GOLD CUP from 1986. This 40-year-old golf shoe served as the inspiration for the COURSECUP, evidenced by the removable kiltie and oh-so-soft leather upper.
You’ll notice a few other surface-level changes, too. Namely, the absence of Velcro. While it played well in 1986, the “kids these days” are more into laces.
As far as technology goes, though, the COURSECUP has been given some performance upgrades to take it out of the ‘80s and into the modern era.
The COURSECUP has spikeless GRIPMORE outsole that uses rubber and spike-style TPU lugs to provide good traction. It has drop-in EVA cushion to bring the comfort level up to modern times as well.
