For years, adidas has owned the cross-section of lifestyle and sport with its iconic Originals line of footwear, apparel and accessories.
But Originals is much more than slapping the adidas Trefoil logo onto a garment or pair of kicks. Originals embodies what it means to blend fashion and function, performance and culture.
In recent years, Originals silhouettes like the ever-popular Samba and cult-classic Gazelle found their way from the feet of athletes onto the high-schoolers and TikTok influencers alike.
Now, it’s golf’s turn to don the adidas Trefoil logo that made its debut in 1972. Introducing Originals Golf, a holistic collection of footwear, apparel and accessories that pays homage to the storied history of what perhaps is the world’s oldest and most iconic sports brand.
“In Originals (golf), we lean more into the look and the aesthetic, because obviously it’s in the fashion/ culture lane and it’s born out of products are already out in the market,” said Masun Denison, Global Footwear Director, adidas Golf. “The sweet spot for us is making sure we have the performance.”
Originals Golf is headlined by two golf-ready sneakers, the COURSECUP and Gazelle Golf. Each pair is born of sport and rooted in performance, with modern looks that ooze culture.
When adidas set out to bring Originals Golf to life, they placed products into one of two categories: period correct and period project.
Most of you are already familiar with Gazelle. Originally designed as a training shoe, the sleek, low-profile model has a cult-like following and has become a streetwear staple as of late. For the first time ever, it’s making its way to the course.
It doesn’t stray far from its heritage (that’s the period correct talking) but does have an upgraded spikeless outsole and waterproofness.
Inspired by one of adidas’ first-ever golf shoes, the Gold Cup (circa 1986), Denison and team brought this pair up to speed with performance enhancements and some cosmetic makeover.
“Spikeless is trending,” Denison points out, “so we went to a spikeless bottom but we put GRIPMORE in so it’s got a little bit more grip, a little bit more technology, a nice, soft leather upper with broguing detail, we enhance the cushioning and the support of the sock liner. We kind of moved it into the, 21st Century a little bit.”
The adidas Orignal Golf COURSECUP and Gazelle Golf shoes are flanked by the continued evolution and revolution of Samba, Stan Smith and Superstar Golf shoes.
But Originals isn’t just reserved for footwear. The Originals Golf branding and Trefoil logo also make their way to an elevated line of apparel, courtesy of Shaun Madigan, Global Apparel Director, adidas Golf.
Having been given the privilege to touch, see and feel many of the upcoming garments from the Originals Golf collection while at adidas HQ in Germany, I can’t speak highly enough of the craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Each piece does well at respecting the culture that Originals has created while maintaining the reverence that makes golf so special.
The adidas Originals Golf collection drops April 3 at adidas.
