Amazon Finds: Chipping Discs
For many of us, winter is waning and golf season is on the horizon. Now is the time to start working on your game to have it primed for the start of the season. Will this latest Amazon find, the flat chipping discs, be the key to mastering your short game in 2024?
The Problem:
Golfers can lose strokes all over the course but a consistent short game can make or break your round. It can be a nightmare of fat chips, bladed wedges and everything in between. The short game portion of golf is a real challenge and honing this craft can help make rounds a heck of a lot more enjoyable.
The Solution:
Chipping discs! These aim to help perfect a golfer’s strike location for chipping and short game situations. Made of softer rubber, these sit flat on the ground and get airborne only with a perfect strike. Strike too low and you will be digging into the ground behind the ball. Swing too high and you will miss the disc entirely. The chipping discs can be played wherever a golfer can make a swing and can be used in different lies or situations.
How I Found It:
I was looking at training aids and came across these. These came up on Amazon as one of their top choices with a 4.4-star rating on over a thousand reviews.
How It Worked:
Let’s start with the good parts about the golf chipping discs. They do exactly what they are meant to do. They help hone in a strike and reward perfect strikes. Slightly thin, and they skid along the surface not going anywhere. Fat shots, well, they are just as you would expect. The club hits behind the chipping disc and into the turf or mat and the disc goes a short distance, if any at all.
The durability has been great. Even though these have been used for many practice sessions and even the odd full swing for fun into the net, they hold up.
The perfect strikes are a wonderful thing to see and feel, very rewarding when struck.
The ability to try different stances, situations and shots with these also leads to more experimentation, resulting in a few more stances I am more comfortable with now than I was prior to using these.
How It Didn’t Work
Now the not so great. I repeat: they do what they are meant to do. That being said, I am not sure what they are meant to do is overly beneficial. Yes, they do help narrow in a strike location and help result in what is, in theory, a better strike pattern on the course. I haven’t found that to be the case.
Not being able to see the flight of a ball or roll out somewhat killed the fun for me. They are also really flat and thin (as they are meant to be) but it means that it is truly a challenge. I felt that some swings which would have been good on the course were not rewarded by training with these.
I normally avoid using a mat at the range but do have one at home and these were difficult to use on a mat. Using them on grass was pretty straightforward and simple, but a mat meant strikes had to be perfect or the result was bad.
Bottom Line:
If you really struggle with your short game, these are a minor investment into something that could help you. However, be prepared for frustration and a lot of “missed shots” due to the difficulty level this training aid provides.
They do work and can help golfers make more accurate swings but not being able to see ball flight or roll leaves a bit of an empty feeling I didn’t expect.
This “Amazon Finds” review of the Golf Chipping disc gets a passing grade from me. The 4.4-star out of five rating on Amazon does seem higher than I would have rated.
