Masters Announces Support of Ball Rollback

Augusta National Chairman Fred Ridley made it clear the Masters supports the USGA and R&A’s golf ball rollback plans, slated to take effect in 2028 for professionals.

Ridley, speaking during his annual Wednesday press conference on the eve of the Masters, commented on Augusta National’s reluctance to continue lengthening the course—which has consistently occurred over the past two decades.

“I’ve said in the past that I hope we will not play the Masters at 8,000 yards but that is likely to happen in the not-too-distant future under current standards,” Ridley said. “Accordingly, we support the decisions that have been made by the R&A and the USGA as they have addressed the impact of distance at all levels of the game.”

A complete breakdown of the rollback can be read here but the short summary is that golf’s governing bodies are changing golf ball testing standards to limit distance. The new rules, announced at the end of last year, go into effect Jan. 1, 2028, as they relate to professional golf.

There is skepticism over whether the PGA Tour will adopt the new rules but Ridley said he hoped it would be universally accepted so the golf world could avoid additional heartburn.

Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club Putter

The new Toulon Golf Small Batch putters honor Alister MacKenzie’s first course, the Meadow Club golf course near San Francisco.Master guitar maker Jimmy Carbonetti made the sole plate from a fallen madrone tree that lived on the course.Available April 11 at ToulonGolf.com with a MSRP of $2,000.

The new Toulon Small Batch Meadow Club putter is the best limited edition putter that Toulon has produced to date.

I tried to come up with some clever way to say that. Something like Toulon hits a home run! since baseball has just started up. The phrase masterful release floated around the page for a bit in honor of Masters week, but that sounded too much like a bass fishing or porn reference.

Ultimately I kept it simple and to the point. The Toulon Meadow Club is the most interesting limited edition putter that I have seen in a long time.

Building a Collectible

The limited edition putter recipe typically includes a few key ingredients. First, you add a unique head shape. Next, you mix in some atypical necks or materials. Finally, you finish off the batch with a pinch of scarcity.

The Toulon Meadow Club putter has all of those ingredients, but it also has one more. It comes with a story.

Tackling the 12th at Augusta – Amateur Edition

Golden Bell is the iconic 12th hole at Augusta National. Although it typically plays around 155 yards during the Masters, it has rung many players’ bells with its unassuming knockout power.

As with nearly, if not all, the holes at Augusta National, Golden Bell is breathtakingly beautiful, but as those who have played it will attest, its serene looks can be deceiving. It’s an absolute card killer.

We have seen many players chasing the green jacket crash and burn here: Tony Finau, Brooks Koepka, and Francesco Molinari in 2019 – the same year Tiger Woods would win his fifth Masters.

But even Tiger has been on the receiving end of Golden Bell’s ugly side. Following up his fifth win, he carded a 10 on 12 in 2020.

So if the GOAT can run up a high score, how might an average golfer fare against the 12th?
