Fire at Launch Technologies Golf Ball Factory Kills 10

An investigation is underway in Taiwan into this weekend’s tragic fire that killed ten people at the Launch Technologies golf ball factory in Pingtung City.

Launch Technologies is one of the largest golf ball manufacturers in the world, producing approximately 20 percent of the world’s golf ball supply. Launch Tech works closely with Callaway, notably producing the ERC Soft and SuperSoft balls. The company also makes all the balls for Topgolf. Additionally, Launch Tech supplies other OEMs with two-piece balls, including TaylorMade, Bridgestone, Mizuno and Wilson. It also services many direct-to-consumer companies.

Its customer list includes OnCore, Odin, Sugar, Seed and Penfold.

More Than 100 Injured

The fire started Friday and was followed by two separate explosions that caused portions of the building to collapse. While the cause of the fire is under investigation, the Associated Press is reporting that Launch Tech has already been fined $75,000 and could face criminal charges for public endangerment and negligent manslaughter.

Specifically, the AP is reporting that Launch Tech had more than 3,000 tons of organic peroxides stored at its factory. That’s far more than the 100 tons that are permitted.

New: Mizuno ST-G Drivers

What should we make of the new Mizuno ST-G driver?

Is it a line extension of the ST 230 driver lineup released this past February? Or is it a preview of Mizuno’s next driver lineup that, if Mizuno holds to its two-year driver lifecycle commitment, won’t hit the streets until 2025?

We do know it’s an on-time replacement for the two-year-old ST-G 220. But from there, the numerology gets a little fuzzy.

Mizuno’s ST 220 metalwood line came out in 2021. The ST 230 line followed in 2023 but without an ST-G. Today, we get a G, but with no numbers at all.

As Michael Keaton sorta-kinda once said: 220, 230 … whatever it takes.

Mizuno ST-G Titanium Fairway Wood

The new Mizuno ST-G Titanium Fairway Wood wants to say one word to you. Just one word.

Titanium.

If you gleaned anything from the name, that shouldn’t be any kind of a surprise. The new ST-G Titanium fairway wood is a graduate-level dissertation on titanium.

But can all that titanium change the fortunes of Mizuno’s fairway woods? Mizuno has finished near the bottom in MyGolfSpy’s Most Wanted fairway wood testing dating back to at least 2018. For a company investing heavily in metalwood performance, it’s an unfortunate trend, to say the least.

Mizuno thinks there’s a great future in titanium and hopes you’ll think about it.

Solheim Cup Highlights Team Golf's Brilliance And Pitfalls

As each year goes by I fear the true sporting spirit of match play is less and less in evidence. We find a growing disposition for play to concentrate on the figures that are registered at a hole rather than on the question of whether the hole is lost or won in a purely friendly match.
