Tiger Talks: Tuesday At The 2023 Genesis Invitational

Water hazards are among the best and most thrilling of natural strategy, and sometimes artificial water hazards are well conceived. Like everything else, such trouble should not be overdone. As noted before, diversity, and yet again, variety, is the spice of a golf course. GEORGE THOMAS

Tour pros would rather go through an IRS audit than play in a pro-am. Publicly they say they love meeting interesting people and how great the pro-ams are. In truth, they loathe them. They're out there for six hours, see countless bad shots and hear the same stale jokes. If Tim Finchem announced next Monday that pro-ams were henceforth eliminated, he'd find 200 cases of champagne on his porch Tuesday morning. TOM WEISKOPF

Weekend Recap: Rahm, Perez And Henderson Triumph

The game as played on the golf course represents only a modest part of the pleasure, enjoyment and satisfaction that comes to a person because he is a golfer. Unfortunately, the avid interest of the golfer does not always attach itself to those stroke-by-stroke recitals so frequently provided by average golfers in average locker rooms; but the lore of the game. the story of its development and of the stirring deeds of the great players of the past must always command the respectful attention of all who play golf at all regularly. To become reasonably knowledgeable in such matters comes close to being an obligation of a true golfer. BOBBY JONES

Good visibility is indispensable if the holes are to present a problem which needs to be thought out with thoroughness in the matter of attack. But visibility should not be unduly stressed, and blindness of a kind can be a virtue. TOM SIMPSON

Coming In 2023: An Urgency To Improve Golf On TV

If Dr. MacKenzie or Donald Ross or any of the other great architects came back now, I wonder what would they think of carts, equipment, and what they’ve done to their courses. I never knew them, but I’ve studied their lives, their courses, and their thoughts on the game. I think they’d take a dim view of it. For centuries golf had had a strong enough backbone to hold onto its beliefs. BEN CRENSHAW

Choices demand decisions and the making of decisions sooner or later leads to doubt. Uncertainty in the mind of the player is a far better and more universally fair defense than distance alone. The greater the technical skills of the player, the greater defense that doubt becomes. BILL COORE

2023 Predictions!

New Year's Day--Now is the accepted time to make your regular annual good resolutions. Next week you can begin paving hell with them as usual. Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink, and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever. We shall also reflect pleasantly upon how we did the same old thing last year about this time. However, go in, community. New Year's is a harmless annual institution, of no particular use to anybody save as a scapegoat for promiscuous drunks, and friendly calls, and humbug resolutions, and we wish you to enjoy it with a looseness suited to the greatness of the occasion. I think I should outlaw any attempt made by architect or inventor to deprive the game of any of its various strokes, or to take from it any of those features which require skill in the play. ROBERT HUNTER
