CGS Orion Closer MB Iron
Introducing the CGS Orion Closer MB! A couple of days ago we posted their Himeji X Tsubame blade (click here)
As I write this I am holding both of their blades in hand so I can share some comparisons. The Himeji X Tsubame blade has a thinner sole, thinner topline, and higher CG location due to more mass higher on the head. This CGS Closer blade not only has a wider sole but it also has a more pronounced trailing edge grind compared to the leading edge being ground on the Tsubame X Himeji model.
The CGS Closer MB is also offered as a combo set where you can pair it with the CGS Orion closer cavity. back. (we will do a blog post on the CB shortly).
As you can see in our photo above the Closer MB has a beautiful sharp toe and a modern back face design.
The closest comparison to this iron would be Miura’s MC-501, both the 501 and the Closer MB are considered blades that have a bit more forgiveness. The CGS Closer MB comes out ahead in nearly all categories:
CGS uses a 1 piece S20C forged head vs Miura’s 2 piece spin welded S25C head. CGS uses a nickel-chromium + copper underlay finish vs. Miura’s standard nickel-chromium finish. CGS uses superior polishing by sending their heads to Tsubame Sanjo and the result is apparent. The lofts are a little stronger on these as the PW comes in at 45* The CG positioning of the #3 thru #7 is constant and positioned lower on the face for an easier time launching the ball for more distance. The longer irons also have a 3 cut sole while #8 thru PW has a 2 cut sole grind with a higher center of gravity location of optimum spin and accuracy on approach shots. How they did this was by having a progressive weight bump that is narrow in long irons, medium in mid irons, and spread wider in the short irons.
above you have some subtle trail edge relief and the same goes for the lead edge. TourSpecGolf is offering the CGS Orion closer MB iron set 5-PW with #3 / #4 / and the Closer Wedges as extra clubs.

CGS Orion Closer Wedge
Introducing the CGS Orion Closer Wedge, made to flow effortlessly with both the CGS Closer MB and CB.
The new closer wedge features a wider and round sole compared to the irons, It’s forged of the same material S20C and finished in the same nickel-chromium + copper underlay finish.
Featuring onset which is the opposite offset as you can see in the photos both above and below the lead edge passes beyond the neck.
The Closer wedge is offered in 2 finishes, I don’t have the Type-B finish in hand to shoot photos of but will bring that in soon. It is a raw style and vintage look finish that can’t be ignored. Simply stunning but it will wear eventually becoming patina.
