There is a lot of cool gear in the golf world that doesn’t always fit into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.
What We Tried: FootJoy Hyperflex Carbon Wide Golf Shoes
Your Thick Kick Tester
Dave Wolfe– Though I mainly talk about putters, I also have feet so wide that I will never accidentally step through a sewer grate.
Do Footjoy Hyperflex Carbon Golf Shoes bring joy for wide feet?
Greetings, big-footed brethren. Sisteren, too, I suppose as some of you also have “enhanced” foot widths. Although I am specifically reviewing the men’s version of the HyperFlex Carbon shoe, FootJoy also makes the women’s HyperFlex in wide widths so some of my findings should apply to you as well.
(I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the spectacular white/purple women’s color scheme should also be available in men’s models.)
Anyway, this is the second FootJoy model I have crammed my fat foot into this year. You may remember the two pairs of custom MyJoys that I reviewed a few weeks back. Wait, if that was two pairs, maybe the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon wide golf shoes are my third pair of wide shoes tested. Oh, math, how adoringly confusing you are.
Regardless, let’s take a look at the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon golf shoes through the “wide-angle” lens.

My other motivations came from our boy Connor’s take on the shoes and the fact that these shoes racked up the MyGolfSpy accolades this year. Not only did they grab the title of Best Waterproof golf shoes, but they also won the overall 2023 Best Spiked Golf Shoe award.
Award-winning and available in wide widths. Yes, please.
FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon Wide Golf Shoes or Golf Slippers
Except for my usual go-to shoes with BOA closures.
The construction of the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon wide golf shoes led me to think that BOA may not be needed this time. These shoes are tongue-free. The material is continuous around the ankle.
The shoe goes on like a slipper. Just grab those tabs on the top and the heel and shove your family of piggies right inside. The elastic nature of the shoe allows it to open up for entry and also retracts to snuggle your foot. The laces are still needed to complete the securing but you could almost play in these without tying said laces.
Almost.
Lacing Spacing and Upper Overhang
Just like I found with the MyJoys, the sole of the shoe is designed to fit the wide upper. My foot did not hang over the edge of the base at any point during play. Overall, the foundation of the shoe is very wide and stable.
I did notice that the shoe has a little more heel-to-toe rake than some of my other shoes. Not enough to force me onto my toes but enough to feel like I was leaning that way a bit. I have had swing issues where I end up too much on my toes so this is something I pay attention to even going so far as to play negative-heel shoes in the past.
All in all, the FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon wide golf shoes were ample in width and very comfortable.
On The Grass
(“What did you learn at MyGolfSpy today, Tony?”)
So, yes, dirt filled all the cool design elements on the shoe but that dirt came off easily with a sponge and water. The material that FootJoy uses makes cleaning easy.
The other oddity was that grass tended to wind around the rear spikes. All spikes collect grass but the wrap-around pattern of grass on these was noticeable. I needed a tee to break the woven grass ring and remove the turf.
Didn’t seem to have a negative impact on traction—it was just an unusual way for the spikes to take some grass home with them.
Footjoy Hyperflex Carbon Wide Golf Shoes: The Takeaway
The HyperFlex Carbons are comfortable. They were great to walk in when it was cold and wet and breathe way more than expected this summer. I do wonder how the BOA version would compare but I don’t hate the laces since the shoe is somewhat secure without them.
The FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon wide golf shoes are stable, durable, washable and should have no problem outliving their two-year waterproof warranty. (If only they came in that purple color scheme.)

FAQ: FootJoy HyperFlex Carbon Wide Golf Shoes
These shoes are amazingly stable during the swing. Did the addition of carbon fiber enhance that? I can’t really quantify that. I’m just hoping that golf shoes don’t constrict my feet. I can say that I didn’t notice anything unusually noticeable in the heel area when walking. Whatever the carbon does, it doesn’t come at the cost of comfort.
For me, these run just a touch larger than I need but I would still order my usual size rather than sizing down. If you are on the edge of two sizes, try the extra wides as well since they will have a different geometry.
I was surprised at the level of snuggly fit the laces provided but I am still on Team BOA. I like how the BOA system quickly and evenly secures the foot.
Maybe. The spikes are replaceable. I may try a different spike model when these wear out. Traction is fine until the grass really builds up. That’s the same for all spikes, though. Unwinding the grass to clean the spikes was the oddity.
