Forum Member Review: Craftsman Headcovers

Craftsman Golf’s stated mission is to make the best golf head covers: “We believe that golf headcover styles your golf game and reveals your style, spirit, attitude, and your unique & authentic performance on the course! You are unique, and we think your golf head covers should also be!”

Our testers were excited to get their hands on these headcovers which are priced lower than many of their aftermarket competitors. Five MGS Forum members were selected to test and keep Craftsman headcovers in exchange for their honest reviews. Two testers, tchat07 and Woody83, opted for the wood headcovers while Alf. S, Randall Robbins and Big moose went with irons.

Tester Expectations

Durability was one of the core qualities our testers would be looking for. While some had never used anything other than the stock cover that came with their clubs, others had used a lot of aftermarket covers.

Another area that would be focused on is fit and functionality. How secure will these headcovers be? For our irons testers, would the closure system be of high quality? Are they easy to remove and replace? Let’s take a look at what our testers had to say.

In order to stay in his bag, tester tchan07 said “ it will need to maintain its shape well and maintain its look. I am gentle with my headcovers so there is no reason it should not last a very long time but that’ll be up to the craftsmanship (pun intended).”

Our testers put these headcovers through their paces, leaving them in the sun and the rain, throwing, tossing and spiking them. How did they hold up? Read on to find out if you’ll be giving Craftsman a look!

First Impressions

Our testers had mixed first impressions of Craftsman’s products.

Tester Alf. S was initially impressed with his iron covers: “They arrived as promised securely wrapped and in A1 condition. On unwrapping and first inspection all the covers were in perfect condition. Comparing them to the neoprene covers I currently have, they are far superior in quality and design.”

Tchan07 had mixed feelings about his woods covers: “Shipping came through in the expected amount of tim. Looking at the headcovers they are very clean looking with the contrasting white background and green clovers. Interesting design with three attached clovers and three embroidered clovers. I personally prefer the embroidered clovers. I think they have a cleaner look and seem like they would take on less damage over time.”

Big moose was quick to get his covers on his clubs to check the fit. “I took every headcover on and off several times to see how easy they were to remove and put back on. They are easy to remove and replace. They have a velvet lining that’s really nice.”

Design, Quality and Workmanship

When it comes to aftermarket headcovers, most will expect a certain standard of quality and design. Craftsman boasts a variety of styles but would their designs and workmanship hold up to our testers’ expectations?

Woody87 spoke glowingly of the woods headcovers he received. “The color scheme and the Patriot design of the clover is terrific. My playing partners love the design and feel of the ones I received.”

Tester Randall Robbins commented on the looks and fit: “These look real nice on the club, and the embroidered numbers/letters make them easy to identif. These fit on the clubheads very well. They have very little give, and they do not move once the Velcro straps engage.”

Tchat07 did note some discrepancies: “On close inspection there are a couple errors when it comes to the stitching. On one embroidered clover on the driver the stem and clover border were much closer than you see on all other embroidered clovers. On the wood headcover there is a clear miss in the stitching border of one of the attached clovers. Finally on the driver headcover one of the border stitching and the attached clover do not line up as well as all the others do.”

Durability and On-Course Performance

When shopping for headcovers, durability and on-course performance may very well be the deciding factor. How will they hold up to various weather conditions? Are they easy to remove from your clubs? Our testers went the distance, and then some, to give you an in-depth look at how Craftsman’s covers handle anything the course can throw at you.

Tester tchat07 took different measures to test the durability of his headcovers: “To test this product, I am going to be aggressive with the driver since it will be used the most. I am going to drop it, throw it, spike it (we all know those golfers who in a fit after a 3 putt take it out on their poor headcover). The wood headcover I am going to expose to the elements, leave it in my car after rounds, toss it in the back of the cart during rounds, let it get wet, bake in the sun etc. Finally with the hybrid headcover I am going to treat it as normal.”

Speaking to what he found with the fairway wood cover. “I have gone to extremes to see if I could get the green to fade or cause some type of damage. I have left it outside at the beach, I have soaked it and left it in a hot car, I even got it dirty and tested how easily it was to clean the smudge. It has passed all tests.”

Randall Robbins was thoroughly impressed with the on-course performance of his iron covers. “These work very well, and do not fall off the clubs like other covers I have used or seen in the past.  To the question about keeping track of them and not losing them. I simply have been putting the cover in my back pocket as I pulled it and then replaced it after the shot; however, the covers all have a looped tag which you could run a lanyard through to connect them all and attach to the bag to keep them.  Any dirt, moisture, grass and other items easily wiped off.”

Closing Thoughts

Most of our testers in their Forum Member Review of the Craftsman Headcovers walked away impressed with available offerings . That being said, not all will be keeping their full set in the bag.

Tester Woody87 will be keeping his in play: “The headcovers are definitely a keeper.  This item does not help you play better but they do look good on your clubs at the course.  Others have complimented them a number of times during our rounds.  They are definitely for any golfers that desire a nice-looking headcover for their woods and hybrid. The price for these quality headcovers is a very fair asking price. From what I see they cost on the website and how good they look as well as how they perform. If and when they wear out, I will be looking on the Craftsman website for another set.”

Randall Robbins will also be keeping his in play, rating his irons covers a strong 98/100: “These are keepers!  I used covers only once before, and they were the rubber types that held moisture, causing some rust to form, while these did not with the cloth lining.  So after being skeptical at first, I will continue to use them.  Besides, they look good in my Sub 70 bag! If you want to protect your investment in irons, then these are the ticket.”

With a final score of 70/100, tchat07 will be keeping just one of the three headcovers in play. “The driver cover will be joining the bag, it performed well in the swing test and I truly do like the complement of the white cover and green clovers within my bag. There was a change in the fit on the clubs, not as snug as when I first received them, so it does take into question. Whether these end up in the lost and found at a course. Overall I think this would be a good headcover for a reasonable price for those who are not cover snobs (I am one).”
