The Testing Opportunity

One of our first testing opportunities of 2023 was for the Red Rooster Sussex Premium Golf Glove. At the time of testing, this glove had not been released to retail and was available only to our selected members and a handful of beta testers for Red Rooster.

Red Rooster released the Sussex glove publicly on June 28 so it is available for purchase now.

The Red Rooster Sussex is meant to be an ultra-premium glove boasting outstanding feel and control with thin Cabretta leather.

Selected members were provided with two Red Rooster Sussex gloves for testing as well as a virtual fitting with Red Rooster to ensure they got the best fitting glove for them.

With the fittings done and the Sussex golf glove on the hands of our testers, let’s dive in to see what they had to say about the glove and experience.

The Reviews and Insights

Whether it is a golf ball, driver, shoes or golf glove, how something feels or fits immediately is key to getting comfortable with the equipment. This is why we wanted to know from our member testers what their first impressions of the Red Rooster Sussex Glove were. Here is what they had to say.

From Swood1994

“This glove screams tour/player’s glove. Very simplistic ALL leather with just a touch of red for the logo. I was a huge fan as soon as I opened the box. A big selling point for me is customer service, as it is for most people. Having a handwritten note from the Red Rooster team was really cool and shows they care about their customers and value this test.”

That wasn’t the only comment which had our testers impressed at first glance.

From EasyPutter:

“The Red Rooster box itself is something that speaks of quality from first appearance. It is not a standard shipping container and announces itself as something to be noticed with its iconic branding.

The gloves provided were 2 of the Sussex gloves we are testing. It is all leather with a snug comfortable fit, fine smooth leather with all stitching where it is supposed to be leaving nothing hanging loose or evident anywhere along the seams inside or out. Comfortable from first try-on.”

Overall first impressions from all of our testers were positive and meant this member test was off to a good start. That being said, it wouldn’t be a true review if we only went on first impressions.

Our member testers played several rounds with the Red Rooster Sussex glove to test durability, fit over time and performance in a variety of conditions.

Here is what they had to say about the various categories they were asked to rate.

From IndyBonzo:

“Being fit into the Sussex glove was a revelation. Like most if not all of the other testers, I was apparently wearing a glove that was too big. Using the Red Rooster sizing chart, and with several try-ons in the pro shop, I ended up going down several sizes from what I had been wearing. And the fit is fantastic now.

But it’s not just about the size. The Sussex fits like a second skin. Some gloves I have tried have an odd finger that’s too long, or can be tight at a seam and loose across a span. Not the Sussex.

The leather itself defines the Sussex. Buttery soft and thin (but not flimsy), the Sussex enabled me to grip a club with no fear of slipping whatsoever, even when damp. After five rounds and some pre-game range time, the grip remained tacky, and I detected no slickness. I have played the high-end gloves made of Cabretta leather from other makers, and the Sussex feels better to me.”

Red Rooster Sussex after 14 rounds

On the course, the Red Rooster Sussex left good impressions and performance all around as mentioned by Stuka44:

“I will say that the Red Rooster performs very well on the course. I had no issues where I felt the glove allowed the club to slip in my hand. I also found that the glove was quite cool. Even in the Carolinas it was quite cool, and didn’t sweat up very quickly.”

There was a lot of talk and discussion about the overall durability of the Sussex as it is an ultra-premium, ultra-soft glove.

Our Member Indy Bozo said this in his final review:
“Most surprising was the durability of the Sussex. After ninety holes, the Sussex still fits tightly, remains tacky, shows no signs of excessive wear or tear and no slipperiness even at primary grip contact points.”

The Final Verdict

We asked our member testers to rate these gloves out of 100. When all the reviews were completed, the grades ranged from 89 to 99. Impressive.

All six testers said they would play this glove in the future and several have made it their go-to glove.

The glove is an often overlooked part of any golfer’s game but, given the feedback from our member testers, the Red Rooster is well worth checking out.
