Yocha Dehe GC
November 13, 2020
The second annual NCGA Senior Series Championship took place Friday at Yocha Dehe GC and crowned two Players of the Year for the Senior and Super Senior divisions.
Mario Perez, who was atop the Senior Division points list when the day started, held onto the top spot, despite less than a stellar round of net 80. Luckily, his 8-over-par, put him in a tie for 11th place (out of 20 players), and that was enough to get the needed points to hold off a surging Mike Morado, who shot a 5-under-par net 67. Morado, who started the tournament in 27th place on the points list, needed not only a first place showing, but also needed Perez to finish 13th or lower to overtake the top spot. Instead, the Escalon resident, finished a mere 37 points behind Perez, who plays out of Greenhorn Creek GC.
In the Super Senior division, Randy Hernandez (not pictured), who started the day fifth on the points list, jumped to the first spot after shooting the low round of those 65 and older, posting a 2-under-par 70. The Stockton resident, who played in all eight regular season events, was able to bookend the season as he opened the season with a win at Baylands GL on August 4. Finishing right behind Hernandez on the points list and on the day, was the 2019 Super Senior Division Player of the Year, Ron Villa. The San Jose resident played solidly for an even-par 72, which was almost enough to defend his title. Finishing third place on the points list was the leader coming into the day, Paul Agriesti, who finished with a final round of 11-over-par 83 for a tied for 15th place position.
The Senior Series program was launched by the NCGA in 2019 and is for players of all skill levels over the age of 55. There are two divisions in the Senior Series: Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 and older). The 2021 schedule will be released in mid-to-late January.
