PING HOVI PLD Limited Edition Putter

The new PING HOVI PLD putter just released. Will it make you play more like Viktor Hovland? That we can’t guarantee, but it is a good looking putter. Here’s everything you need to know about this limited edition release.

What You Need to Know

PING is releasing 100 “Hovi” Signature PLD Limited models.  The putter commemorates Viktor Hovland’s remarkable 2023 season. The putters will be built to Viktor’s exact specifications and will come with a limited-edition Viking-themed head cover. Available Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. EST with a MSRP of $900.

Viktor Hovland

PING thinks their staffer Viktor Hovland had a season worth commemorating with the “Hovi” Signature PLD Limited DS72.

Of all of the things that have been commemorated with putters, making one to celebrate Hovland’s accomplishments this year seems justified.

Hovland’s game got stronger and stronger as the year went on. He played like a giant boulder rolling down a hill. You may not have noticed it moving at first but, by the time it got to the bottom of the hill, there was nothing that was going to stop its momentum.

I truly enjoyed watching Hovland separate himself from the pack in the FedEx Cup playoffs. He was in total command of his game. That run alone would be a reason for celebration. When he chipped in from the green on his first Ryder Cup hole, I knew that the U.S. team was in trouble.

Hovland’s PING Putter was Clutch

What allows Hovland to smilingly crush his opponents? Not his steadily improving short game and not his bombs off the tee, either. He dashes the hopes and dreams of other golfers with his putter.

This is not a new thing. Do you remember how he played the U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach in 2018? Like this year, he was playing at a level that the competition couldn’t match. Much of the credit then could once again be given to his putting.

Specifications: PING “Hovi” Signature PLD Limited Putter

100% milled 1018 carbon steel “Hovi” engraved on sole Patina finish 36” length 360-gram head weight Milled, shallow grooves Top-rail and cavity-floor sight lines Winn 15” “Long Pistol” grip (Red) Production run: 100  MSRP: $990

The Hovi PLD Limited-Edition Putter

Hovland’s PING putter is a bit unusual, at least compared to the more traditional putters in your local shop. This DS72 began as a prototype. From there, Hovland and PING engineers tweaked and dialed in the features, ultimately creating the putter you see in his bag today. The PING “Hovi” PLD Limited putter that you can buy is just like that one.

Maybe it is a little odd to start out talking about a putter’s grip but that big red Winn grip was the first thing I noticed during television coverage. At 15 inches, it is longer than you would expect to find on a stock-length putter. Good thing that the 36-inch Hovi is not stock length.

Though not counterbalanced, the extra shaft length and longer grip allows you to grip the putter a little lower, placing some of the shaft and its weight above your hands. This will offset the 360-gram head weight just enough to allow you to win the FedEx Cup.

Finishing out the look, the “Hovi” PLD Limited features the same patina finish as Hovland’s putter, custom “Hovi” engraving on the bottom and a limited-edition Viking-themed head cover.

Final Thoughts on the PING “Hovi” Signature PLD Limited Putter

Congratulations to Viktor Hovland for a great season. His efforts this year are truly worthy of celebrating with massive amounts of prize money and a limited-edition putter. His putting glued me to the TV. I loved watching him get the Aimpoint read with his feet and just drop bomb after bomb.

Also, he seems like a genuinely nice person and I’m all for good things happening to nice people.

If you want to putt with your own ‘Hovi”, it will set you back $990 and you will need to be at your computer promptly at 2 p.m. EST on Oct. 10. Even with the “one per customer” limit, these are going to go quickly.

FAQ: PING “Hovi” PLD Limited Putter

Where are these putters made?

The “Hovi” putters are machined at the PING factory in Phoenix, Ariz.

Can I just buy the head cover?

I had the same question. Unfortunately, I don’t think we will be able to score one without getting the putter, too. That said, did you know you can buy other non-stock head covers in PING’s PLD Shop? I like the purple topo. I think Hovland was using a topo headcover at one event this season.

Will there be a retail version of the DS72 this year?

I’m not sure if there will be a new version but you can head to PGA SuperStore right now and pick up a stock PLD DS72 for $450. Not built like Hovland’s, though.

Do you know what kind of music Hovland listens to when getting ready to compete?

One of my favorite things about Hovland is that he likes listening to metalcore. Yep, behind that innocent smile lies a metalhead. Check his Spotify Favorites playlist. He has the face of a cherub and the soul of a Viking.
