PING x Hideoki Collection: Crazy or Awesome?

Today, PING announced a new limited-edition collection of golf goods in collaboration with Hideoki Bespoke, maker of fine menswear and custom clothing. The limited capsule consists of high-end apparel and accessories designed to pay homage to golf’s rich history.

The PING x Hideoki Collection is a far departure from the norm — especially for PING.

Known for being straight-laced PING is here to show the world that their take on “different” is pretty darn cool. Is it for everyone? No. Many of you may scroll the product pages wondering why the heck PING would even do something like this.

Even still, the collaboration is a large step off the beaten path for a brand that’s been hesitant to stray from it. Will this be the start of a new fashion-infused trend? Only time will tell. You certainly don’t need any of these items to play a round of golf, but if you’re intrigued by edgy luxury you’ll want to take a look.

The 19th Collection

If you gave me five guesses as to who conjured up this luxury menswear collection, there’s no way I would have guessed PING.

And that’s kind of the point. The PING x Hideoki collection consists of luxury clothing, footwear, home and lifestyle accessories that trend more towards streetwear and high fashion.

Golf accessories and apparel on this end of the fashion (and price) spectrum are quite a hard sell. I don’t know too many people willing to drop a couple hundred dollars on a luxury PING wallet or duffle bag.

And PING knows this. The PING x Hideoki collection is unapologetically not for the masses. It may even draw eye rolls from the majority who see it. If PING’s history of innovation has any bearing on the future, I wouldn’t be surprised if more OEM’s follow suit with their own collabs of this caliber, just like they did with the original Anser-style putter design.

“This collaboration furthers our commitment to growing the game by providing golfers the highest quality, most innovative and custom products available.” said Andy Solheim, Executive Vice President at PING. “Their team shares our passion for approaching things in different and unconventional ways, which makes this partnership a great opportunity for both brands.”

It’s unconventional, it’s hip. It’s everything that PING currently isn’t.

My Thoughts

We’ve spent years raving about PING drivers. One only needs a few minutes on the MGS Twitter page to find a glowing review of what PING does with clubs. Now it’s time for some well-deserved praise for what PING is doing off the course. This one-of-a-kind collection from PING and Hideoki is the coolest thing I’ve seen this year. That’s just me, though.

As mentioned, I’m probably in the minority in this regard. This collaboration isn’t for everyone. It’s probably not for most people. Expensive scarves and high-end shoes may not be your thing, and that’s ok. You may even think that PING should stick to golf clubs and “stay in their lane”.

For me, it’s shows a commendable effort on PING’s part to get outside of their comfort zone and try something different.
