PXG made a splash with their premium golf clubs accompanied by premium prices. Since then, their lineup has significantly expanded, along with their range of prices. PXG now offers several families of golf irons, each at various price points to meet the needs of different consumers. With finishes and options within those families, PXG has a complete range of irons that are definitely worth a deep dive.
PXG Iron Families:
Within each family of PXG irons, there are many options. If you are visiting their website, you can see there are older models that remain current.
That said, their core families of irons are the 0211 series, their entry-level or game-improvement iron. The next numbered line is the 0317 irons, which includes blades and cavity-back irons. We then get into the Gen series, the newest of which is Gen 6 0311 series that has several finishes for each of the two models in that family. Finally, there is the GEN5 family. This family will not be covered in-depth as they have replacements within the newer ranges. However, for those looking at PXG clubs for a lesser price, these should be on your radar.
PXG Irons: Model-by-Model Overview
We usually go over a few of the key technologies for the brand and cover a few highlights but, with an extensive range, I felt it best to dive right into it and, for a change, we start with the more forgiving models.
PXG 0211 XCOR2 Irons
Meant For: Golfers looking for more distance and added forgiveness in irons. These are in the player’s distance category with similar tech stories to others in the category.
Available Irons: 4-L
Shafts: Steel/Graphite
Dexterity: RH Only
PXG 0211 CORX Irons
The 0211 is a popular series of irons for PXG for more reasons than one. For starters, it is their most affordable iron, yet still packed with technology to offer great distance, forgiveness and control.
A key technology is the XCOR2 interior. This is a polymer core inside the hollow-body design to help improve the feel. Its lightweight design also allows PXG to place discretionary weight into other areas and boost the MOI of the iron. The other technology and features the 0211 brings to the table are the Power Channel Technology to help increase launch angle, trajectory and ball speed along with a HT 1770 maraging stainless steel face, their thinnest ever. Again, this helps with ball speed and distance.
Finally, the 0211 XCOR2 irons have a progressive offset design—more in the longer irons and less in the shorter irons to help most golfers and an angled top line that gives the perception of a thinner topline. This appeals to many golfers and has the benefit of looking thinner while still providing forgiveness.
Overall, a solid performer that will fit many golfers.
PXG 0211Z Hybrid Irons
Meant For: Ultra-forgiving and bigger super game-improvement iron built for those wanting maximum forgiveness and distance in irons. A golf club that can also be great for those with slower swing speeds and don’t mind a bigger club to look at.
Available Irons: 6-S
Shafts: Graphite
Dexterity: Both
About the PXG 0211Z Hybrid Irons
It’s all in the name. The 0211Z hybrid irons are big but are a great option for golfers wanting more forgiveness and distance out of their clubs. They are a hollow-bodied construction iron that has a low and rear center of gravity to help get the ball in the air with greater ease and at slower swing speeds.
The irons also feature a generous amount of offset that can aid those who have trouble with a slice to see straighter ball flights. They also feature lighter-weight components to further help those with slower swing speeds.
PXG 0317 Irons
This family of irons consists of three models for the better golfer. While the 0211 series was built and designed for the higher handicap, the 0317 handicap is on the opposite side of the spectrum.
PXG 0317 Milled Blades
Meant For: Ball-strikers who want a thin topline, smaller profile to work the golf ball in all directions and those who do not focus on forgiveness.
Available Irons: 5-G
Built for Combination Sets: Yes
Shafts: Steel/Graphite
Dexterity: Both
About the PXG 0317 Milled Blades
The PXG 0317 Milled Blades are made from 8620 soft carbon steel that is three times forged. It is offered in two finishes: standard Chrome and Xtreme Dark. The dark finish is a DLC coating which typically is much more durable than a PVD finish.
When it comes to features, the Milled Blades feature a single large weight at the back of the clubhead to help with forgiveness but are more for achieving optimal swing weight.
The clubhead is milled front and back for a higher level of precision and to enhance the overall look. These are blades and play like such. They have a smaller topline and shorter blade length that would appeal to golfers with elite ball-striking abilities.
PXG 0317 Cavity-Back Irons
Meant For: Better ball-strikers and lower handicaps who want more help than a blade but still like the look and precision of a fully forged iron.
Available Irons: 3-G
Built for Combination Sets: Yes
Shafts: Steel/Graphite
Dexterity: Both
About the PXG 0317 Cavity-Back Irons
These irons carry over a lot of the characteristics and features from the Milled Blades but with a slightly more forgiving package. This includes the secondary Xtreme Dark finish, 8620 soft carbon steel construction and full milling. The larger back center weight to dial in swing weight is also present in these cavity-back irons.
The main difference is the slight cavity-back for added perimeter weight and forgiveness. Interestingly, the Cavity Back Iron is also available with 3- and 4-irons where the Milled Blade is not.
These are a great set to combo together or with the iron we will discuss next, the 0317 Tour. If you are looking for control, feel and precision over forgiveness in a sleek design, the 0317 Cavity-Back irons are worth a look.
PXG 0317 Tour
Meant For: Low- to mid-handicaps with better ball-striking abilities. Those looking for a smaller iron with a little additional forgiveness while not giving up some of the forged and control aspects that come from the Milled Blade and Cavity Back irons in the 0317 family.
Available Irons: 3-G
Dexterity: Both
Shafts: Steel/Graphite
About the PXG 0317 Tour
This model, unlike the others in the 0317 family, is a hollow-body design filled with what PXG calls S Cor Polymer Fill. It has a slightly larger profile and is a multi-material construction design with tungsten in the toe. Overall, this package is more forgiving and produces faster ball speeds with its integrated technologies.
While it does differ in many areas, it still carries over the multi-finish option, large rear weight, 8620 carbon steel material and milled front and back. All of this makes it a great fit for golfers wanting a little extra help in a package that doesn’t look as big and carries over much of the aesthetics of the fully forged irons.
PXG GEN6 0311 Family
Sitting between the 0211 and 0317 families is the GEN6 0311 series of irons featuring two models and a total of eight options when you include the different finish options. This is possibly the family of irons that most consumers looking at PXG irons will fit into.
PXG GEN6 0311 P Irons
Meant For: Lower- to mid-handicap golfers who want additional forgiveness and distance but still a certain amount of control and precision in a player’s distance iron.
Available Irons: 4-G
Dexterity: Both
Shafts: Steel/Graphite
About The PXG GEN6 0311 P Irons
The GEN6 0311 P irons are another hollow-body iron from PXG. They are packed with technology and are their most feature-rich iron. The GEN6 0311 P irons include the XCOR2 polymer to help with sound and feel as well as moving weight around in the club head.
They feature Power Channel Technology for faster ball speeds and better launch conditions as well as a five-times’ forged 8620 carbon steel construction which helps with enhancing feel. The back is milled for precision and includes the large weight port. Finally, PXG introduces the new variable thin face, claiming to be the thinnest face in golf. It is made of HT1770 maraging steel and helps make this one of PXG’s longest clubs while retaining feel and forgiveness.
Many golfers are going to fit well into these irons. They are available in four colors (Double Black, Chrome, Double Chrome, Xtreme Dark).
PXG GEN6 0311 XP Irons
Meant For: A slightly larger package than the 0311 P irons, the XP are suited for higher handicaps and those looking for a larger iron with the same technology features.
Available Irons: 4-L
Shafts: Steel/Graphite
Dexterity: Both
About the PXG GEN6 0311 XP Irons
The story is the same as the P series. It encompasses the same features and aesthetic options in a larger package. There are additional options for club selection with the XP series such as a sand wedge and lob wedge. This can be a great option for those looking to add distance or who need extra help around the greens and approach shots with more forgiveness.
About The PXG GEN5 0311 Irons
The family consists of three models: 0311 T, 0311 P, 0311 XP.
All are available in two finishes (Chrome or Xtreme Dark) and have similar technology stories to the current GEN6 models. The GEN5 include XCOR2 polymer, Power Channel Technology, rear weight port, hollow-body design that is five-times forged and a thin face for faster ball speeds.
The GEN5 0311 T is the smallest iron of the family with less offset, thinner sole and shorter blade. This is meant for a golfer who would be considering the 0317 Tour model.
The GEN5 0311 P is slightly larger and has a bit more offset. It is the previous version of the now GEN6 0311 P.
Finally, the GEN5 0311 XP is the largest in this family with a longer blade length, wider sole and significant offset. As the name suggests, it is the prior version of the GEN6 0311 XP.
All of these are offered at a reduced price although some have limited options. Either way, they are worth a look if you want to save a few dollars.
