Today, Scotty Cameron has announced the release of the Inspired By Justin Thomas Phantom X 5.5 putter. The timing for this release is almost storybook, as Mr. Thomas nearly won his second FedEx Cup last weekend. DJ refused to give up his lead, but JT made him earn the victory.

For those of you not familiar with the Scotty Cameron’s Inspired By limited putters, these are putters that, as the name suggests, are Inspired By the putters that tour players use. Unlike Scotty’s annual Holiday and My Girl releases, the Inspired By putters don’t follow a set release cycle. This makes their release a bit more noteworthy and boosts their collectability.

I believe that the Inspired By Justin Thomas putter is only the ninth Inspired By release since 1999. If you are looking to collect a set of Cameron putters, this one may be the most fiscally accessible.

Let’s take a look at what separates the Inspired By Justin Thomas Phantom X 5.5 from the retail Phantom X version found at your local shop.

Specifications: Inspired By Justin Thomas Phantom X 5.5

Model: Phantom X 5.5 Prototype Materials: 303 stainless steel face and 6061 aircraft aluminum soleplate Finish: bead-blasted Neck: welded slant neck Length: 34.5” Weights: 10g Grip: Pistolero Plus grip in cement gray with black lettering Release Number: 2020 Release Date: 09/22/2020 MSRP: $850

The Inspired By Justin Thomas Neck

This was an extremely cool project for me to work on with Scotty. When I first saw the 5.5, I immediately noticed how nicely it sits down on the green. The neck just makes it sit so square. In the beginning, I was only thinking it would give me something different to look at for a couple weeks – yet here I am – four-something years later and still using it. So, I guess it’s worked out pretty well. -Justin Thomas

In addition to the unique Justin Thomas aesthetics, the primary difference between this Phantom X 5.5 and the retail version is the neck. Retail Phantom X 5.5 putters achieve arc-friendly stroke paths via variable shaft bend points. Rather than go that route, the Inspired By Justin Thomas putter features a welded-on flow neck.

The quote above implies that for Justin, this neck provides the look at address he’s looking for, while keeping the feel that initially attracted him to the Phantom X 5.5. Once again, the mallet that plays like a blade theme continues in 2020.

If you are a JT fan, perhaps you are even inspired by Justin Thomas, then you will want to hit up your local Titleist retailer on September 22, 2020 to grab one of these.

Actually, you may want to call that shop today and see if they are taking reservations. True, 2,020 putters is a large run for a limited release. However, even at $850 per putter, these will sell out. The fanbases for Scotty Cameron and Justin Thomas are sizable, and they are going to want to grab this putter. Don’t lollygag, or you’ll miss out. I’m still annoyed that overthinking caused me to miss the 2018 H18 squareback release.
