Scotty Cameron Limited-Release Special Select Jet Set Putters
Let’s Have a Black Celebration
Shiny metal putters got you down? Do you long for something a little gloomier on the green? Well, Scotty Cameron is bringing new music for the masses that is sure to enliven (or enervate) your songs of faith and devotion on the course. It’s construction time again. Put a black lines on your ball, and around your eyes. It’s time to grab some great reward, dispatch your fashion, and join the Jet Set.
By now, you have probably picked up on the fact that I listen to too much dark wave, and that these new Camerons feature a black finish. Some of you knew these would be black as soon as you saw the Jet Set name, remembering Scotty’s H-2011 Jet Set limited putter that was released in 2011. Maybe you even sent in your Cameron to the Custom Shop in 2012 for a full Jet Set Junkyard Dog restoration.
So black-finished putters are not new for Scotty Cameron but it has been more than a decade since you could get a black-finished Newport without some DIY rattle-can action. This is the first black-finish release for the 2020 Special Select putters.
That said, is there more to this limited release than just a black finish? Let’s take a tour through the models and then meet back here to discuss our findings.

A souped-up version of Scotty’s classic heel-and-toe weighted blade, the Special Select Jet Set Newport includes a plumbing neck, the model’s distinctive rounded features and a unique sight line milled on the topline. Precision milled from 303 stainless steel, this limited-release putter has a solid face, misted Tour Black finish, adjustable performance-balanced raw tungsten sole weighting and includes the line’s new textured Pistolini Plus grip and Jet Set headcover.
Scotty Cameron Special Select Jet Set Newport 2
Designed with the proven shape, plumbing neck and tri-sole of a modern Newport 2, the Special Select Jet Set Newport 2 is milled from 303 stainless steel with customizable tungsten sole weights, a Tour Black finish and the line’s Jet Set graphics package, including a specialty shaft band, headcover and textured Pistolini Plus grip. Incorporating a subtle design characteristic—and inspired by the putters he makes for touring professionals—Scotty included a milled sight line on the topline rather than a standard flange line. A limited number of left-handed Special Select Jet Set Newport 2 models were also created.
Scotty Cameron Special Select Jet Set Newport Plus
Crafted slightly wider when measured from face to flange, the Special Select Jet Set Newport Plus offers a new size in high-performance blade putter design. Relying on proven multi-material design methodology, Scotty accommodated the fuller profile by distributing weight to the perimeter and incorporating a 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum sole plate, anodized black and engraved with the line’s Jet Set graphics. A milled flange sight line provides clean alignment while customizable stainless steel sole weights provide balance. A new textured Pistolini Plus grip, Jet Set shaft band and specialized headcover complete the package.
Scotty Cameron Special Select Jet Set Newport 2 Plus
Splitting the difference in flange width between a Special Select Newport 2 and Squareback 2, the Special Select Jet Set Newport 2 Plus offers a Tour-inspired shape that introduces the next profile in high-performance blade design. Milled from 303 stainless steel with a solid face, the Newport 2 Plus has a 6061 aircraft-grade aluminum sole plate, anodized black and engraved with the line’s Jet Set graphics. A milled flange sight line provides clean alignment while customizable stainless steel sole weights provide balance. The putter includes the line’s new textured Pistolini Plus grip, Jet Set shaft band and specialized headcover.
Plus Sized Models
You’ll find four models in the Scotty Cameron Special Select Jet Set line. Two of them, the Newport and Newport 2, are somewhat traditional designs. While not huge deviations from the stock heads, they do feature top-edge alignment lines. Perhaps it has escaped my memory but I do not remember Scotty Cameron previously releasing either of these blades with a top line.
The big story, though, is the new Plus versions of the Newport and Newport 2. The surprising thing is that they are not huge but “tweener” models. I’ll let Scotty explain.
The ‘Plus’ models are in between the width of a Newport 2 and a Squareback 2. I developed this “tweener” size working with a few Tour players who wanted something in between the width of a traditional blade and our Squareback flange width. Scotty Cameron, Maker of Putters
Do you want an Anser-style putter but are tired of Goldilocks-ing between blades and mallets? A Newport Plus or Newport 2 Plus could be your just right putter. The plus models are larger than the traditional blade size but are they as large as a mallet. Think of them as slightly beefy. A New York strip rather than a porterhouse.
Scotty Cameron Special Select Jet Set Weighting
All four of the Scotty Cameron Special Select Jet Set putters feature the “as expected” customizable sole weights. Nothing crazy there. I do find it notable that the plus versions also feature an aluminum sole plate as well. Sole plates usually only show up when you migrate from blade land into mallet territory.
This design feature piques my curiosity. I am interested to see how the sole plate feels in this middle-child design scheme. Basically, does it feel any different?
The addition of the plate motif should allow for relative weighting to move from the center to the edges—a standard aluminum-for-stainless steel swapping scheme. However, does the midsized Plus head have enough discretionary material to move to make a difference? There must be some significant weight redistribution since the Plus models have stainless-steel heel and toe weights as compared to the denser tungsten weights found in the standard Newport and Newport 2 models. If more weight needed to be moved, we would likely see tungsten in the Plus models as well.
Are You Joining Scotty Cameron’s Jet Set?
What do you think about the Special Select Jet Set Limited Release? Is there enough uniqueness to justify the increased price versus retail models? I’m not sure the black color and top line is worth the upcharge compared the traditional versions. If the endless darkness of the Emo Jet Set Newport complements your ennui, then you may see its value differently. Kidding aside, these are very clean-looking putters. I appreciate the lack of engraving above the cavity. The overall design lets the shape of the metal be the attraction. Love that.
The Jet Set Newport Plus and Newport 2 Plus seem more like true limited-edition putters to me. Not only are these heads that could fit that in-between size profile that you have been looking for but they are also completely new heads. First appearances are staples of comic collecting, bumping the collectability by a bunch. The Newport Plus and Newport 2 Plus are first-edition putters.
First appearances always merit consideration. Sure, most first appearances will be like Mongoose’s needle-deadening debut in Amazing Spider-Man #283. Occasionally though, you get something big like The Punisher showing up for the first time as in Issue #129. Sure, $650 seems expensive now but, if these become Cameron collectibles, that could jump significantly. Maybe not from 20¢ to $45,000 like that Punisher comic but the decimal will slide over a spot for sure.
