Steph Curry and Lee Elder Look to Inspire Future Minority Golfers

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry has already made efforts to bring golf more to the Black community, including supporting the re-establishment of the Howard men’s and women’s golf programs in Washington, D.C..
Back in 1975, Lee Elder became the first Black player to compete in the Masters. In recognizing Elder, at this year’s recent Masters he’d join Hall of Famers Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player as an honorary starter for the championship.
Now, Curry and Elder are teaming up as part of a national outreach to minorities to hopefully get them more involved with the game.
“We are a dying breed on the PGA Tour, and I’m speaking of the minorities,” said Elder in an interview with The Undefeated’s Marc J. Spears. “The minority race, as far as them coming on the tour and playing, it’s just not happening.”
As part of the collaboration, Curry earlier this month launched a Masters-themed baseball cap through Curry Brand and Under Armour. Stitched on the cap: “1975,” the year Elder broke the color barrier of The Masters. On the side of the cap reads a quote from Elder: “Stay the course.”
Below is a video from Curry’s Instagram account featuring the two talking about carrying the torch. Among those in the video is current NCGA Board of Director Preston Pinkney, who serves as Director of ACE Kids Golf in Oakland. Since 1998, ACE Kids Golf has been making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged kids in the Oakland community by providing supervised fun, safe, educational and recreational junior golf programs and field trips.
