TaylorMade Irons: Model By Model

TaylorMade Irons: Model By Model

To say TaylorMade is a popular iron brand would be a huge understatement. They continually produce high-performing irons for all golfers and have a broad range of options. From Tour players to beginners, TaylorMade has irons for that golfer. With consistent advancements in technology, they are often recognized as a market leader and a brand many golfers enjoy playing. Their iron line is extensive, even overwhelming, and that can lead to some confusion. So we are here to break down the current TaylorMade irons, model by model, to let you know which ones fit your game.

TaylorMade Release Cycle:

There is a trend among most larger manufacturers of making a family model that releases each year along with the drivers and fairways that share the same name. These models are usually aimed more towards the game-improvement category.

Then there are secondary family models that are released every 18 to 24 months. These usually fit into the player’s distance, player’s, Tour and super game-improvement categories.

TaylorMade follows this trend with their current Qi irons that were released with the Qi10 drivers and fairways and their P-Series irons that have a longer release cycle.

Key Technologies for TaylorMade:

When talking about TaylorMade, there are always several technological discussion points that are key or worth noting. They have long tagged new technologies in their irons that help improve one area or another. Not all of them make it to the following model. However, some have and these are the ones we will highlight here.

SpeedFoam Air Technology: Introduced in their hollow-body designed irons, the SpeedFoam Air technology is a core feature for some TaylorMade irons. Ultimately, it fills the hollow-body heads, dampens vibrations and helps create a better feel and sound in the irons. It is lightweight and therefore does not impact the weight of the iron.

Speed Pocket Technology: Another core feature is visible on several TaylorMade irons. This is a small cutout at the bottom of the club that is then filled. This allows for more flexing on low strikes to help get the ball in the air. Within some TaylorMade sets, Speed Pockets are only included on the longer irons as they have found it to be beneficial only within the longer clubs.

Multi-material Designs: This now is considered pretty commonplace among companies but they include several materials in their irons. This helps maintain, control and optimizes the CG placement for better performance.

Compact Grain Forging provides a tighter grain structure that equates to the best possible feel. It also includes the same machine-milled face and grooves as well as a thinner sole design for improved turf interaction.

An all-around performer for the best of the best.

TaylorMade P-770

p770

Release Date: Jan. 20, 2023

Meant For: Low and potentially mid handicaps looking for a little added distance within a slightly smaller packaged iron. Golfers searching in the player’s iron category who don’t want to go into a bigger-looking iron.

Available Irons: 3-AW

Shafts: Steel/Graphite

About the TaylorMade P-770 Irons

The TaylorMade P-770 is a player’s iron packed with technology. With progressive launch and spin control courtesy of the FLTD CG technology, this strives to make the longer irons easier to hit while optimizing flight and spin in the scoring clubs.

The shaping is more compact than the P-790, with less offset, a thinner topline and a shorter blade length, all of which should appeal to the “better golfer.”

Built as a forged hollow-body iron with an extremely thin face, these also feature the Thru-Slot Speed Pocket Technology and Progressive Inverted Cone Technology that look to stabilize ball speeds across the face and improve overall playability.

All in all, these are a well-rounded iron that will not only perform for many golfers but also have the aesthetic appeal many golfers look for as well.

TaylorMade P790 Irons

p790

Release Date: Aug. 8, 2023

Meant For: Players seeking distance and forgiveness in an all-around performing iron. Those that could use a little help but still want good-feeling precision irons.

Available Irons: 3-AW

Shafts: Steel/Graphite

About the TaylorMade P-790 Irons

The P-790 has been considered by many the gold standard for player’s distance irons since its introduction. Now into its fourth generation, the technology continues to progress and evolve. For the newest P-790, new AI-optimized weighting and SpeedFoam Air have been introduced along with further AI-optimized construction that changes the interior of each iron as well as tungsten weight placement for a more balanced set from the shortest iron to the longest.

As with the TaylorMade P-770, it includes the FLTD CG technology, Thru-Slot Speed Pocket and an “intelligent sweet spot” from a 4140 forged face that is TaylorMade’s thinnest ever.

The P-790 from TaylorMade may be their most diverse iron. While built for distance and forgiveness, it can be played by virtually any golfer who likes the look. With a slightly bigger footprint, more offset and thicker topline, it will not appeal to all golfers but, at the same time, this is not to be considered a chunky iron at all.
