TaylorMade’s Carbonwood era appears to be on the verge of a sequel.
With the PGA TOUR ready for action again at the Sentry Tournament of Champions, the USGA’s first conforming driver list of 2023 indicates a number of the company’s Tour staff could be brandishing updated big sticks at Kapalua this week.
Three versions of a new TaylorMade driver under the names Stealth 2, Stealth 2 Plus and Stealth 2 HD appeared on the list Monday without product or performance information.
Part II
However, we can assume a few things about the new models from the USGA images and accompanying identification markings.
The most obvious bit of conjecture falls under construction materials.
All Stealth 2 drivers are described as having “60X Carbon, Twist Face” and each model features the word “Carbonwood” on the sole. That typified the inaugural Stealth drivers which TaylorMade brought to the marketplace early last year.
60 Layers, No More?
Noteworthy with these new Stealth 2 models is weight allocation. Since only the sole of the club is photographed for the USGA’s list, how the company positions weight in the head profile is often only partially displayed. However, the pronounced rear weight is obvious.
Two different-sized Stealth 2 Plus heads have 15-gram moveable weights with the words “Fade” on the toe side and “Draw” closer to the heel. Stealth 2 and Stealth 2 HD come without a provision for moveable weight. Both feature fixed weights in designated locations to promote ball flight including more draw-bias weighting closer to the perimeter of the HD version.
As has been a TaylorMade hallmark, and according to the USGA descriptions, all new Stealth 2 models come with a Speed Pocket in the sole and an adjustable hosel to change loft and lie.
TaylorMade is expected to officially announce its line of Stealth 2 models later this month.
