The Masters Has Empanadas Now

The Masters Has Empanadas Now

There was no April Fools joke here, and thank God for that (unlike Tiger Woods, who is not playing in the Masters despite this post on X).

I was scrolling through Instagram on April 1 when, bam, there it was: the Masters empanada.

Immediately, everything was okay. All of my worries and concerns fell to the wayside, for the Masters empanada is here to save us all.

Technically the fine folks at Augusta National are calling this a “tomato pie”—a “Southern tradition” that will be making a “limited debut” at this year’s Masters (“limited debut” means it’s a soft launch and then staying with us forever, right? Right?).

They can call these empanadas/tomato pies whatever they want because I am going to devour a million of these little handhelds that appear to be savory, saucy and cheesy—all surrounded by a flakey, crispy crust.

It’s the closest we may ever get to Masters pizza, which is a departure from the typical food items we see. Our prayers at Amen Corner have been answered.

The Masters already has some of the best (and cheapest!) food in the world of sports concessions, so I’m ecstatic to welcome this new addition to the lineup.

Imagine pairing this with a pimento cheese sandwich. We might have to wheel some patrons off property by day’s end, but at least they will be happy.

I question the timing of the announcement because I would have gone into fetal position if this wasn’t real. Thankfully, the Masters doesn’t roll like that. The tomato pie is listed in the official safe-to-consume guide under sandwiches.

Breathe a sigh of relief.

The Masters empanada is here.
