The Ultimate Golf Gift: The PING Slam PLD Limited Collection
Are you the ultimate PING fan or know someone who is? If so, then you will want to check out the PING Slam PLD Limited Collection.
You may recall PING released a limited-edition putter corresponding to each major in 2023. Thes putters commemorated the fact that PING putters were used by all of the men’s major champions in 1988. This is the only time in professional men’s golf when this has happened.
Hence, the PING Slam.
What Was the PING Slam Again?
As I said, back in 1988, PING putters were used by all four major champions. This is something that had never been done before and has not been done since. A “grand slam” if you will, just for PING putters.
Here is a recap of the winners and their putters:
The Masters: Sandy Lyle’s PING Pal The PGA Championship: Jeff Sluman’s Pal 2 The U.S. Open: Curtis Strange’s Zing 2 The Open Championship: Seve Ballesteros’ AnserThis new collection includes all four of these putters and their unique commemorative head covers in a nifty collector’s case.
But wait, there’s more…
Five grand for four putters is a lot. Sure, the 18”x18” display case is rad but that’s still a significant pile of coins for four putters. These putters are heads only. They don’t even come with grips and shafts. How can one even take them to the course?
They do come with head covers so they will be protected when you do figure out how to game them.
PING has added one other item to the Ping Slam PLD Limited Edition Collection that sweetens the pot and should help figuring out which PING to game. PING has bundled a PLD Custom Fitting and putter with the package. Now you are getting five putters for five grand. What a bargain!
My ribbing of PING is good-natured and, actually, I see the inclusion of the PLD Custom as a big sweetener. First of all, that PLD Custom program carries a price of $1,490 for the fitting and the putter. That’s a significant add-on. I bet PING could have sold all 35 of these without including the PLD Custom or maybe a PING Slam hat instead.
But they did go with the PLD Custom addition and that means that, along with a very unique PING collectible package, you will end up with a PING putter fitted and customized to your game and aesthetic.
As far as bonus items go, that is no “free hat” addition.
Final Thoughts on the PING Slam PLD Collection
If you missed out on the individual releases, this is your chance to grab them all as a set. There are only 35 of these and they do come with the hefty price of $4,990. The fact that you also get to partake in the PLD Custom program is a bonus but the overall price is still substantial.
That said, I think these 35 sets will sell out. The individual putters sold out in minutes and there were 88 of each of those. My thin billfold says I won’t be in the queue for this one but there are no doubt some chaps with fat stacks ready to snag one of these at 2 p.m. EST on Tuesday, Dec. 5.
Not for nothing, giving someone (or yourself) the gift of the PLD Custom would be amazing. Feel free to justify that purchase by saying you are saving $3,500 off the cost of the putter collection. You’re welcome.

FAQ: PING Slam PLD Limited Edition Collection.
How many of these are being made?
There will be 35 PING Slam PLD Limited Edition Collections available for purchase.
Do they really come without grips and shafts?
Yep. This batch includes only the heads and the head covers. They are destined to look stately on a desk or other display location. Naturally, nothing is stopping you from adding a grip and shaft and getting one of these dirty.
Any favorites in the set?
Probably the Anser. I love the sound slot—and Seve.
Will there be more PLD Limited Editions in 2024?
That I don’t know. So far, it seems like an annual thing for PING. I would not be surprised if we see another batch of four putters next year but I have zero information to go on at this point.
