Any golfer knows the game’s tradition and camaraderie can be enhanced by quaffing a refreshing and delicious beverage. The combination of a well-designed course and beautiful scenery inspires golfers to seek out not only delicious alcoholic drinks but also those whose sole purpose is hydration.
My Favorite Golf Drinks (Alcoholic)
Personally, I prefer mixed drinks over beer or seltzers. Whether I am watching the Masters in my azalea polo or heading to the 19th hole after a good round, these are some of my go-to beverages.
The Transfusion
This drink has taken the golfing world by storm. Its popularity can be attributed to its simple yet satisfying combination of ingredients. This cocktail has become a staple on course and after you have one, you will know why.
This is one that I typically drink when I am in a scramble tournament. Pairing it with a warm sunny day and going low in the scramble and you have an unbeatable trifecta.
How To Make:
Making this popular drink is a breeze.
Add ice to a glass and add a measure of vodka – 1.5 ounces for a standard drink (substitute with tequila if you prefer).
Pour in equal amounts of grape juice (Concord grape juice is best) and ginger ale – 2 ounces of each (or more if you prefer).
Garnish with lime wedge.
Stir and serve.
The Azalea Shade
This one pays homage to the Masters. Whether enjoyed on the course or as a tribute to what many consider the mecca in golf, the Azalea Shade is a sweet and colorful drink that is a fitting companion to elevate your appreciation for the sport.
This classic drink is one I am typically drinking strictly during the Masters. There’s something about sipping one while watching the tournament and admiring the azaleas in bloom. Take a moment in April when you tune into Amen Corner or after a special round with family or close friends to indulge in this classic beverage. (I am not a bartender so did not use terms like “part pineapple juice” or “part lime.”)
How To Make:
Add ice to a cocktail shaker and add a measure of gin – 1.5 ounces.
Cranberry juice – 2 ounces.
Pineapple juice – 2 ounces.
Add lime juice.
Shake and strain to serve.
Rum and Ginger Ale
I would be remiss, as a former sailor of the seven seas, if I failed to mention my favorite mixed drink. This drink is my go-to no matter the occasion or where I am, especially on the 19th. You can typically find a box of Captain Morgan nips in my cooler pouch (don’t tell the starter) and a cooler of ginger ales for my annual golf trip with friends and family.
How To Make:
This is a classic duo and could not be simpler to make. Just add a 1-to-2 ratio of rum to ginger ale and you are good to go! You can also substitute ginger beer for ginger ale for a spicier version of this classic. Next time you are out and crack into your private cooler stash, be sure to call it The Sailor. Maybe it will catch on!
Hydration on the Greens: Unleashing the Benefits of Electrolyte Packages for Golf
I prefer to consume only non-alcoholic drinks until I am finished my round. These drinks aren’t your grandfather’s tonic water or unsweetened iced tea. Staying properly hydrated is crucial for optimal performance on the golf course. While there are various sports drinks available to quench your thirst (I water these down if it’s all that’s available, if that gives you any insight into me), electrolyte packages have emerged as a game-changer when it comes to hydration. More and more often we see these drinks on the golf course for golfers of all ages and skill levels.
Packed with essential minerals and nutrients, these convenient and effective solutions provide numerous benefits that set them apart from other traditional drink options. Golf may not be as physically demanding as some other sports (so you think), but when I am walking the course, I tend to really sweat, especially in the summer. No matter how grueling, I will walk any course and here in the Northeast there are some serious hikes.
Electrolyte imbalance has been linked to reduced cognitive function, which does not go well with playing golf. To offset that, I am always drinking electrolytes and there are a slew of options. There are plenty of cost-effective purchases that come in containers but for simplicity’s sake and portability I have added packet versions for this (I would love to see these available for guests at the 19th hole). Here are some of my favorites.
LMNT
https://science.drinklmnt.com.
I typically use this mix when I know it’s going to be hot or maybe I am playing 36 holes. You know that feeling when you are on course and you just cannot seem to get enough water in you? This supplement eliminates that for me. It quenches my thirst and I do not feel as rundown after a hot, humid round. My favorite is the watermelon salt but they really are all solid. I prefer to dilute mine with 32 ounces of water and make it last nine holes.
Jocko Hydrate
Offering a well-balanced blend of electrolytes, essential vitamins and healthy ingredients, Jocko Hydrate optimizes hydration and promotes efficient recovery after intense physical exercise. This is one I use almost every time I am golfing unless it’s one of those serious hot rounds. It is also recommended for daily use.
I play a lot in the morning so the added vitamins and minerals give me a little boost throughout the day. It is naturally sweetened unlike LMNT but contains just two grams of sugar. The flavor would be much more suitable to those who might be deterred by the salty flavor of LMNT. Lemon-lime is my preference but you can choose from the wide selection of flavors they have Jocko Fuel. They offer a 20-percent discount to anyone who is or was in the military.
SkyMD
This supplement I have yet to use on the course because I am partial to LMNT and Jocko, but I wanted to try this as a potential option. SkyMD could be a better solution for those searching for a little sweeter beverage since it has a little more added sugar than the previously mentioned options. SkyMD also offers tailored plans for those looking to find a daily supplement, which could be beneficial for those looking for that.
Enjoy your time on course
For me, when it comes to staying hydrated during a game of golf, the key is finding the right balance between enjoying a refreshing beverage and properly hydrating my body. Having a cocktail on the course can be very enjoyable and sociable. While many golfers say it calms their nerves, I prefer to prioritize the non-alcoholic drink and hydrate until I hit the 19th hole.
Choosing to hydrate properly involves drinking an adequate amount of water, ideally combined with electrolytes, before, during and after your round. Every golfer should be paying attention to their body’s hydration needs, especially in hot and humid conditions.
The choice between drinking on the course and focusing solely on hydration depends on personal preference. No matter what you choose, enjoy your time at the course! So grab your G&T, Gatorade, scotch on the rocks, water or one of the drinks discussed previously and I will see you at the 19th hole.
