Vokey Wedge Works Limited Edition 54 M Grind

Vokey Wedge Works Limited Edition 54 M Grind

As releases of Vokey Wedge Works limited-edition golf wedges go, the announcement of a 54-degree M grind is a bit on the low-key side.

All things are relative, of course, but that’s coming from a guy who gets unnaturally excited about T grinds and V grinds and even 64-degree W grinds with a Jet Black Premium finish.

Whisper “Slate Blue “into my ear and … Let’s not go there.

The point is, I love this stuff.

A Surprisingly New Offering

I don’t mean to imply I don’t love a 54-degree M grind but if you’re not intimately familiar with the full retail catalog of Vokey golf wedge offerings, you probably thought it already exists.

I did.

It’s a reasonable assumption. As iron lofts have gotten progressively stronger, wedge lofts have followed suit. Vokey now sells more 50-degree wedges than 52s and the conventional progression of 52-, 54- and 60-degree wedges is being challenged by 50-, 54- and 58-degree options to better flow from increasingly stronger-lofted pitching wedges.

With that, logic says that anything offered in a 56 should be offered in a 54 and, before today, the M grind was the only wedge in the Vokey lineup you could get in a 56 but not a 54.

Anyway, while it’s not nearly as exotic (by wedge standards) as some of Vokey’s other Wedge Work releases, the 54 M grind is simply a matter of common sense.

About the Vokey Wedge Works M Grind

The M grind is perhaps notable for being Bob Vokey’s personal favorite grind. It falls in the category of versatile grinds, which basically means it offers plenty of utility for golfers who like to open the face of their wedges around the green.

The signature design features include relief in the heel, toe and trailing edge. Within the whole of the Vokey lineup, that’s a popular combination. You’ll find similar descriptions for the T, V and D grinds. The takeaway is that, while the big picture stuff is similar, there’s enough difference in the finer points of the grinds to yield significant performance differences.

The Vokey Wedge Works 54-degree M grind is classified as a mid-bounce wedge. The closest point of comparison is likely the D grind which has a similar shape but has a higher effective bounce.

With that, the 54-degree M grind golf wedge may be preferable for a golfer who plays in medium-firm conditions, plays out of firmer bunkers (I’m looking at you, McGregor Links) or has a neutral-to-shallow attack angle.

By comparison, the D is a bit better in softer conditions or for golfers with steeper attack angles, particularly on full swings.
