Vokey WedgeWorks 60A Wedge

It’s been a couple of years since an A Grind last landed in Vokey WedgeWorks, and it’s probably not a stretch to assume that the Vokey Design WedgeWorks 60A will be the last of the SM9 era.

Still, I expect there will be plenty of interest in Vokey’s latest low bounce wedge offering.

Grinds can be complicated, so perhaps it’s helpful to understand that for all the variety offered within the Vokey lineup, there are only a handful of what you might call core grinds. By and large, they’re the familiar ones (F, M, S, L, etc.) that show up on retail shelves year after year.

A good bit of what hits WedgeWorks aren’t so much wholly unique grinds as they are variations of a core grind.

For example, the most recent WedgeWorks release, the V Grind is basically a higher bounce take on the extremely versatile T Grind.

About the WedgeWorks A Grind

In the case of the Vokey WedgeWorks A Grind, the starting point is the L Grind – one of two 4-degree bounce options in the retail lineup.

Originally created for Geoff Ogilvy, the A Grind can be thought of as an L Grind with the ribbon removed.

What’s the ribbon? (you might ask)

Simply, the ribbon is an area of relief in the transition between the meaty part of the sole and the trailing edge. It’s the bit highlighted in the middle of the L grind shown below.

The result of smoothing things out is a club that moves through the turf with less resistance.

Vokey A Grind on Tour

The A Grind has become a popular option for players looking for a low bounce wedge that produces a higher trajectory.

Wyndham had an A Grind wedge in the bag when he won the U.S.Open. Tom Kim won 3 times this year with an A Grind in the bag, and Max Honma swapped his L for an A for the firmer conditions at the Open Championship.

WedgeWorks 60A – Another Low Bounce Option

Like the L and T (another Vokey wedge with ribbon) the Vokey WedgeWorks A Grind offers just 4 degrees of bounce – making it suitable for firm turf, firm bunkers, and shallow swings.

The advantage of low bounce is that it allows you to play shots from the tightest lies. The disadvantage is that it requires plenty of precision, as the relative lack of bounce is prone to digging.

The A is the only low bounce Vokey wedge I haven’t tried, but with respect to L and, I suppose, T, it reads a bit like trading some versatility for a bit more forgiveness going through turf.

Vokey’s last WedgeWorks offering (the V Grind) proved extremely popular. It sold out almost immediately, so if you’re interested in the A Grind, I’d suggest acting quickly.

WedgeWorks 60A – Availability, Pricing, and Customization

The WedgeWorks 60 A Grind will be available globally beginning Tuesday, Nov. 7, in right-hand and Raw Finish only while supplies last. MSRP: $225.
