For 2023, Vokey appears to be using its limited-edition WedgeWorks platform to explore the tail end of the wedge grind alphabet.
As you may recall, the Masters was the occasion that warranted the release of the aggressively lofted 64-degree W grind.
As we creep towards summer, Vokey is following the W with a high-bounce lob wedge option: the 58- and 60-degree V grind. Both are listed as 10-degree bounce offerings.
According to our recollection, this is the first time the V grind has been offered since 2016.
About the Vokey V Grind
I suppose it would be nice if every Vokey grind were available all the time but the retail catalog already includes seven grinds, nine lofts and 25 possible loft/grind combinations. Toss in two more by way of the 58- and 60-degree low-bounce K grind options that are always available through WedgeWorks and it’s apparent that the available shelf space at retail can’t support all the nuance in the wedge space.
Subtle differences, the stuff that often comes across as minutiae, are part of what makes golf wedges so interesting but it’s also not lost on me that it can be overwhelming for golfers to sort through.
So, to simplify things a bit, you can think of the Vokey WedgeWorks V grind as a higher-bounce take on the T grind.
As you might be aware, the T grind is a low-bounce offering, the defining characteristics of which are aggressive relief in the heel, toe and trailing edge. Also of note, the bounce angle is more forwardly placed.
It’s an outstanding option for tight lies, golfers who like to manipulate the face and shallow attack angles.
While I’m not a shallow attack guy, it’s why I love the T grind. The knock on the T is that it sometimes wants to dig, especially when the turf is soft.
Vokey V Grind Versus T Grind Wedges
When things are soft, whether we’re talking about the whole golf course or the sand in the bunkers, the V grind might be the better option.
It’s also well-suited to players with neutral to steep attack angles as it’s not going to be as prone to digging as the T grind.
As much as I love the T, when the course is wet, it comes out of the bag.
The V grind should retain a good bit of the versatility of the T and, while it doesn’t sit quite as low to the ground, the added bounce should add a measure of forgiveness, especially in soft conditions.
A higher-bounce, more forgiving take on the T grind: that’s a solid summary of what the Vokey WedgeWorks V grind is. When it comes to the real world, the V Grind is my rainy-day T Grind.
