Faces of the NCGA: The Power of a ‘Hello’

Faces of the NCGA: The Power of a ‘Hello’

March 30, 2021

At a recent WGANC Open Day at Butte Creek Country Club, all golfers were out on the course. I was sitting on their patio having a cup of coffee and watching the progress on Golf Genius.

A very nice, older lady walk by and I said, “Good morning”. The woman, an NCGA member named Marilyn Brownfield, proceeded to stop for a chat and told me stories of her 80 something years. Her stories were very interesting and entertaining. She had volunteered to spot on a hole on the back nine for the tournament. After about an hour and a half of visiting, Marilyn bid me farewell and went out to her volunteer position.

2021 Tommy Armour Impact Putters

The new Tommy Armour Impact 2021 line includes revised No. 1 and No. 3 models and a new No. 2 wide. All putters feature new contrasting visuals and a new softer insert.Putters are available now with an MSRP of $149.99.

In 2021, Tommy Armour is updating its Impact putter line. In most situations, a big box sporting goods retailer updating a house putter line would not be a big deal. However, the original Tommy Armour Impact putter line proved to be anything but a dismissible batch of budget putters.

Sure, the “budget” moniker was appropriate as the original Impact line had a MSRP of $99 with coupon codes potentially dropping that further. Cheap is nice but cheap and effective is fantastic for potential putter purchasers.

When the Tommy Armour Impact No. 3 won the Most Wanted Mallet title in 2018, we all took notice. When it did it again in 2019, we knew this putter was special. Since then, the Impact No. 3 has generated a bit of a cult-like following. Those who game the No. 3 take great pleasure in knowing that their $99 putter crushes the competition at the cash register and on the course.

Ultimately, that is why the 2021 Impact update is a big deal. Now the question becomes: Can Tommy Armour keep the magic of the No. 3 intact and perhaps even imbue the No. 3’s magic into the other models?

Let’s take a look at the new features and models in the 2021 line.

Two Minutes to Better Golf

You have got to try this simple, yet highly effective, exercise! Whilst it’s not as easy as it might appear it can be done fairly quickly and at home. This valuable little nugget was shared by my friend and Golf Fanatics expert contributor, Mike Carroll. It will help with mobility, strength and mechanics. Watch….

Mobility

As you work through each swing strive to go back a touch further than you did on the previous swing. I’ve done this for a week now and can feel the difference already.

Strength

As much as we might not be willing to admit it, strength makes a substantial difference in the distance that we hit the golf ball. If you start doing this with a light weight try to move up in weight as the weeks progress. I’m currently using an 8 pound medicine ball.

Report: No Spectators at U.S. Women’s Open at The Olympic Club

Report: No Spectators at U.S. Women’s Open at The Olympic Club

March 29, 2021

There will be no fans allowed on-site at the Olympic Club in San Francisco for the 2021 U.S. Women’s Open, as first reported by San Francisco Chronicle golf writer and NCGA Golf Magazine contributor Ron Kroichick.

The championship, the first women’s major to be held at The Olympic Club, is scheduled for June 3-6.

According to the Chronicle, state and local public health officials made the decision in coordination with the United States Golf Association and LPGA and that only a limited number of Olympic Club members will be permitted on-site during the event.

The 2020 U.S. Women’s Open was postponed from last June to December and was played in Houston, also without fans.

Results: Golf Equipment Brand Perception (One Word) Survey

A few months ago, we posted the 2020 edition of our One Word Survey. This is now the third time we’ve played our favorite word association game.

If you don’t recall or are just stumbling onto this for the first time, the idea is for you to choose the golf equipment brand you most associate with each of the words we presented. Figuring some of you might have other brands in mind or that a given adjective wasn’t applicable to any brand, we also gave you a none of the above option. For the sake of consistency, we left the survey largely unchanged from the original. However, we did add a couple of new words to reflect recent industry trends.

We understand that the one-word approach doesn’t leave much room for nuance but that’s part of what makes this exercise so interesting. We don’t know what your second choice might have been; we only know the frequency at which each brand was chosen.

By looking at year-over-year changes, we can get a sense of how the market is shifting and how your perceptions of brands may be shifting with it. When big brands experience big shifts, it can be telling.

It’s also notable when a smaller brand moves the needle for a given word. We expect market-leading brands will be selected more often for both positive and negative words. Those are the names golfers know. They’re the brands golfers buy most often. So, when a challenger brand factors significantly in the results, it’s worth pointing out.
