The new COBRA KING Black Edition irons signal the official beginning of the end for COBRA’s current KING TOUR and CB/MB irons.

That’s not as ominous as it sounds.

For the past decade, OEMs on a two-year-plus life cycle have been giving their irons a final-year boost by offering them in black. It’s an iron set’s rite of passage. You’ve done your job so it’s time for a little cosmetic facelift to jump-start sales until your replacement is ready.

Which, if history is any guide, should be anytime between this January and next fall. We’re leaning toward the fall.

So, yeah, on the one hand, it’s a blatant cash grab. On the other hand, they almost uniformly look really, really cool.

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What we tried:

The Canon Powershot Rangefinder. We’ve tested plenty of Nikon rangefinders so it was finally time to add another famous name to the mix.

Who tried it:

Connor. Director of Content and resident sneakerhead. We shoot on Canon cameras at the office so when I found out Canon had a rangefinder, I had to give it a whirl. Hopefully, it can make my game look better than it actually is (that’s what a camera is good for, right?)

What makes the Powershot unique?

I’ve tested more than 25 rangefinders and the Canon Powershot has one trick no other can match: it can capture photo and video. Fitting, coming from a camera company. I’ve yet to see another rangefinder that offers this functionality.

Even with the added functionality, the rangefinder must still function as a solid rangefinder in order to make my bag. How did the Powershot fare?

Wear your golf shoes only on the course

This may sound obvious but wearing golf shoes off the course has become increasingly popular with the introduction of spikeless shoes. Golfers find their spikeless golf shoes so easy and comfortable that they also wear them as casual shoes.

The landscape of golf apparel has undergone a drastic shift in the past few years. A lot of things have contributed to this change, none of which is more impactful than the resurgence of collaborations.

It’s a simple idea. Two brands, one product line. But that’s nothing new. The big reason collabs have been so successful, in my opinion, is due to the sheer unpredictability and randomness of said partnerships.

Who would have seen Maxfli and Metalwood partnering for an apparel collection? Not me. Alas, I didn’t think Coke and Oreo would team up for a chocolate cookie-flavored beverage but here we are.

Like Maxfli and Metalwood, it’s better than it sounds. I wasn’t sure what to expect but what Maxfli and Metalwood have come up with is pretty darn cool.

Where are golf balls made?

That’s a question that comes up a lot, and while I’m sure the guys leaving comments are doing so in good faith, the evidence suggests there’s plenty of confusion.

Hopefully we can clear some of it up.

For now, we’re going to focus on urethane models. There are fewer factories that make them and, broadly speaking, while some to take measures to obfuscate their sources (and some say their contracts prohibit them from disclosing their factories), they are easier to track.

That said, we have included some notes on ionomer models at the end.

A month (maybe two) ago, we asked you to tell us about your most history with custom club fitting and your most recent fitting experience.

Rather than rehash every question and answer, we thought it might be better to share the most interesting findings from the survey and so here you go.

These are the 10 biggest insights from our 2024 fitting survey. And just like YouTube, if you stay ‘til the end, I’ll give you a special bonus insight.

1. Golfers think fitting is expensive

Before we talk about what happens when golfers get fitted, I wanted to start with the reasons why golfers don’t get fitted.

More than 40 percent of golfers who have never been fitted say it costs too much. Another 30 percent say they’re not good enough.

Some records in sports can’t be touched.

Call me when someone reaches Wayne Gretzky’s 1,963 NHL assists or Cy Young’s 749 complete games pitched or Wilt Chamberlain’s 50.4 points per game in the NBA.

Yeah, I don’t think any of those are being matched unless those sports have dramatic rules changes.

Finding untouchable accomplishments is a little harder in golf, a game where longevity and age don’t have the same power as more physical sports. Regardless, there are still some marks that will take a herculean effort to eclipse.

As you might guess, Tiger Woods factors in heavily to these records. In some cases, he tied a previous record. You might be asking how a record could be unbreakable if it was already broken. My answer is that Woods is the greatest golfer in history, so I think it’s fair to wonder if some his accomplishments will ever be replicated. In a lot of cases, I highly doubt they will.
