The Ram Axial Forged irons finished third overall in MyGolfSpy’s Player’s Iron testing this year. It came as more of a surprise than it probably should have.

Sure, Ram and its recently resurrected stablemates MacGregor, Teardrop and Ben Hogan have some interesting things going on. That Ram came up with an excellent performing forged iron is to its credit. But it’s also important to note that the player’s Iron category is one where smaller brands can compete evenly with the so-called Big Five of Callaway, Titleist, TaylorMade, PING and COBRA.

Smaller brands have traditionally performed very well in the player’s Iron category. In 2023, the Takomo TG 301 CB finished third overall. The year before, the New Level 623 CB finished first. Ever since direct-to-consumer became a thing, entries from brands such as Ben Hogan, Sub 70, New Level and Scott Golf have performed surprisingly well.

We are talking about single-piece forgings here. The overall technology level isn’t high so there is, to a degree, a more level playing field. But still, the Ram Axial Forged did surprise us.

Therefore, it seems worthwhile to dive deeper and see just how the Axial came to be.

At best, having sweaty hands on the golf course is annoying—at worst, you’re hurling a club into oblivion.

Knowing how to stop perspiration from soaking your palms and screwing up your game could give you the edge you need to start “sweating” strokes from your scorecard instead.

The methods below are merely simple tips you can use in the moment or before you hit the links, not major lifestyle changes like daily meditation or a new diet. Although those big moves may help if you frequently find yourself stressed or feel unhealthy, they take time and won’t help when the source of your sweat is the blazing sun. And if you think you might have a medical condition like hyperhidrosis, go see a doctor who can prescribe you something to dry up your moist mitts. We can’t do that. We’re just a golf website.

1. Take your glove off

Covering your hands with golf gloves can make them sweat. And if you’re not wearing one, maybe you should be. Our testing of shots hit with gloves versus no gloves shows faster ball speeds and farther carry distances when golfers wear them.

When wearing a glove, you should be removing it after every shot. This may sound obvious but it’s the sweaty hands’ equivalent of “turning it off, then back on again.” Maybe it just didn’t occur to you and that’s OK. Ideally, you should have at least two gloves so you can swing with one, take it off, hang it from your bag or cart to dry, let your hand chill out before your next stroke and then put on the other glove and repeat the process. With any luck, this will save your hands and gloves from getting sopping wet.

Golf courses feature multiple tees to accommodate players of different skill levels. However, many golfers struggle with knowing which tees best fit their game. While you’re free to choose any set, picking the wrong tees can lead to frustration and negatively impact your round. To help ensure you’re playing from the right spot, avoid the common mistakes amateurs make when selecting tees. Use these checkpoints to guide your decision and set yourself up for the best possible day on the course.

Golf tee selection (Hole by hole) 

One of the best ways to analyze which tee box to play is to break the golf course into par-3, par-4 and par-5 holes. Grab the scorecard of your local course and some knowledge of your last 18 holes and work through this problem hole by hole.

Par-3 tee selection 

A standard golf course has four par-3s. There are usually two around the same distance, then a longer one and a shorter one. Find the two holes about the same distance and determine if this distance is about a 6-or a 7-iron shot for you. 

The tee box is too short if you are swinging with a wedge on most par-3s. If it takes a hybrid or a fairway wood to reach the green, you need to move up a tee box or two.  

Par-4 tee selection 

The length of par-4 holes varies quite a bit so you have to think about averages here. Golf courses are designed to have a variety of holes, with some being shorter opportunities for birdie and others longer challenges for par.

CaddyDaddy testing highlights

Excellent Dry Weather Grip: The CaddyDaddy Claw Pro and Max gloves both excelled in dry weather for grip. Testers noted that even on older, worn-out grips, the silicone material helped to create a strong and secure grip.…Struggles in Wet Weather: Testers noted that during rainy conditions, the silicone grip lost all of its “tack.” This was consistent with both the Pro and Max gloves.Ventilation and Breathability: The Claw Pro was great on hot days with testers noting that it kept their hand cool and dry. The Max didn’t fare as well with testers mentioning the difference in materials as the most likely root cause.Machine Washing? Testers stated that after wearing the gloves for multiple rounds and washing them, they returned to “out of the box” condition. If you don’t like spending money on new gloves, this could be the one for you.

Initial thoughts and impressions

Our testers were eager to receive the Claw Pro and Max gloves to begin their testing. Some were left a bit uninspired initially, noting that with an attempt to list all of the benefits on the packing, it felt a bit like a product out of an infomercial. Those thoughts were quickly dispersed, though, with tester gavinksi91 noting that once the glove was on his hand, it looked and felt good and high quality.

Rico_de_Gallo also spoke to build quality, saying that “they have a good clean and sleek look to them. Well fabricated and well built. The Velcro on the back is good and strong.”

Another common theme among testers is that the Claw glove seemed to be built more like a “work” glove than a golf glove. However, this was not to be taken as a negative as they believed it would help with the glove’s overall durability.
