Mexico Open at Vidanta betting guide: 7 picks our expert loves this week

The Mexico Open at Vidanta gets underway Thursday. Here are seven picks our betting expert loves (and why he thinks you should too).

Increase Your Driver Distance

Your driver is the only club that you need to depend on for maximum distance. Hitting closer to the green on your drives will give you a better chance for more one putt greens. You should be taking advantage with your teed up ball forward in your stance to launch it for more distance. A new high-tech driver may help but you should improve your impact and power before you spend more cash on another driver.

Impact on the Center of Your Driver Face:
Jack Nicklaus said that playing your shot is 50% mental and 40% setup. The easiest way to increase your driver distance is to impact your ball at the center of your driver face. You need to determine your best stance by trial and error for the unique characteristics of your swing to launch your teed up ball.

At the practice range, apply some foot spray powder on your club face to determine your point of impact. Your stretched arms at the point of impact are different for every golfer. Adjust your club head position behind your teed up ball as well as the distance from your body to determine your ideal setup to launch your drive upward at least 60 feet in the air. Make sure that your impact point is about 4 inches beyond the lowest point in the arc of your DRIVER swing.

Strengthen Your Shoulders, Arms and Wrists for More Power
1/ Over the past 5 years Rory McIlroy has increased his average driver distance by 10% to 330 yards. Daily exercise is the key for his success. He believes that throwing a medicine ball sideways with outstretched arms (up his target line) was the most effective exercise that he uses. Of course, he has a trainer who catches the ball and returns it for his next throw.

2/ Phil Michelson recently created a video of his warmup exercises using elastic stretch bands to activate and strengthen his swing. He ties them to his golf cart or a door handle and uses a series of dynamic stretching exercises with about 10 stretches on both sides of his body for at least 5 different motions to strengthen his shoulders, torso, arms and wrists. When you buy the bands in 3 different strengths, they offer a series of exercises. This is a major change from his younger days when he picked up a few clubs and swung them a few times to loosen up.

G/FORE GALLIVAN2R: Breaking The Mold

G/FORE, the brand founded on the idea of “disruptive luxury”, hasn’t been shy about bringing out bodacious and brash designs and shoes that seemingly eclipse every casual golfer’s budget.

What if I told you G/FORE has designed a shoe that features the same tech, luxury design and comfort of its most popular models for $50 less? Color me intrigued.

Introducing the new G/FORE GALLIVAN2R (pronounced “Gallivan-Tour”). A true hybrid that combines G/FORE’s best-selling shoes (the OG GALLIVANTER and the MG4+), the GALLIVAN2R is everything you know and love about G/FORE in a more budget-friendly package.

Here’s why I think the GALLIVAN2R has the potential to be G/FORE’s best-selling shoe.

A True Hybrid

If the new GALLIVAN2R was a car, it would be the new Prius. And, if you’ve seen the 2024 Prius in person, you know what I’m talking about. It’s sleek, fast and, dare I say it, kinda sexy.

Vessel Kintsugi Collection

Kintsugi or golden joinery is the Japanese art of fixing broken pottery with a gold lacquer. It’s all about finding beauty in imperfection.

While generally reserved for pottery, luxury bagmaker Vessel has taken the artistic approach and applied it to a limited release golf bag.

The idea is simple: showcase mends and seams to turn flaws into focal points.

The limited Player IV Pro and Lux XV 2.0 golf bags received a kintsugi-style makeover. With gold embroidery that mimics the makeshift lines of kintsugi, each bag stands alone as both a useable vessel and an art piece.

Both the Player IV Pro and Lux XV 2.0 golf bags are available to Vessel VIP subscribers today. A general release of the Kintsugi Collection will take place on Feb. 22.

The Golf Ball Rollback: Four Common Sense Alternatives

The uproar over the golf ball rollback sure has died down, hasn’t it?

That’s the way it is with uproars. They’re largely unsustainable for one simple reason: new uproars come along and take their place. There’s only so much rage to go around.

And here’s the crazy thing. The golf ball rollback was announced barely over two months ago, and it may already be old news.

Consider the following:

It was announced within a day of Jon Rahm’s jump to LIV.The PGA Tour continues its flirtation with PIF and the Saudis. At the same time, the Tour announces a multi-billion-dollar deal with the Strategic Sports Group. We’ve had over 60 new product launches. We’ve had a lift, clean and place-tainted 60 at Pebble, a 59 at LIV and a drunken shit-show at the WMO.

Seriously, who has had the time to think about a rolled-back golf ball?

Forum Member Review: SuperSpeed Golf

Every couple of years, MyGolfSpy Forum runs a member testing opportunity with SuperSpeed Golf. Even though the product has remained relatively unchanged since its inception, the program itself has evolved to make it more effective for all golfers looking to gain speed.

We selected nine Forum members to review the SuperSpeed Golf program. All of which had different abilities and swing speeds for testing. They were separated into groups for slow, mid and high swing speeds.

The testers went through 10 weeks of training, recorded their progress and provided updates along the way. These thorough reviews of the SuperSpeed program discuss the highs and lows and showcase how the testers were able to fit the training program into their daily lives.

What is SuperSpeed Training?

The core SuperSpeed training program includes three swing speed sticks with different weights at the tip. These weights are either heavier or lighter than the average driver. Swings are taken in various sequences and recorded (usually by Swing Radar or PRGR, which was included as part of testing).

The SuperSpeed training program is what is called an “over-speed swing.” Taking swings as fast (not hard) as you can allows your body to recognize true speed to unlock more distance. The lighter speed sticks often produce the fastest speeds which then slow as the sticks get heavier, teaching the body how fast it can truly swing.

SPOTTED: Kirkland Signature KS2 Putter

If TaylorMade’s recent lawsuit had any effect on Costco’s golf production … they sure aren’t showing. Rather than shut down and take an L, it appears that Kirkland Signature is revamping for yet another budget-friendly release: the KS2 putter.

We’ve just seen the first images of what appears to be the bargain brand’s first mallet putter, dubbed the KS2.

While information is still very limited, there are a few things we can infer based on initial photos and the past KS1 putter design.

Adjustable weights. The KS2 Putter will feature adjustable weightsSingle-bend hosel. Based on the initial photos, the hosel appears to be a single-bend.SuperStroke Grip. Photos don’t show the grip on the KS2, but we can infer based on the KS1 that the KS2 will come standard with a SuperStroke grip. CNC milled from 303 stainless steel.

The winged KS2 Putter is not yet available at retail, and we’re not sure of pricing or anything beyond initial photo leaks. As soon as we know more information, you’ll be the first to know.

Prime Time: Why Night Golf Could Explode in Popularity

There are about 16,000 golf courses in the United States, but less than one percent of them have lights.

That could change in the coming years as many in the golf industry feel we are at the beginning of a night golf trend.

Why? For starters, interest in par 3 courses—which are usually the only types of layouts to include lights—has increased dramatically the past few years.

The Google search history for “par 3 golf near me” is up more than 60 percent since the pandemic started, which easily outpaces the growth in general “golf course near me” searches. And according to the National Golf Foundation, 50 percent of new course openings in the United States over the last decade have been nine-hole layouts or short courses.

They are quicker to play, easier for beginners and generally less expensive—successfully combating three of golf’s biggest participation obstacles (time, difficulty and cost).
