We Tried It: L.A.B. Golf DF3 Custom Designer

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf world that doesn’t always fit into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

We Tried It: L.A.B. Golf DF3 Custom Designer

L.A.B. Golf continues to be one of the hottest putter companies.

No other small putter shop has a growing professional tour presence like L.A.B. Golf. New professionals are putting L.A.B Golf putters in the bag every week. Just a few weeks ago, we saw Will Zalatoris return to the first page of the leaderboard at Riviera with a L.A.B. Golf putter in his bag. If you check his WITB from 2023, you’d find a Cameron in his putter well.

How Driving Distance Has Evolved on the PGA Tour

In case you haven’t heard, driving distance has been a major discussion topic within golf over the past few years.

We have our own opinions for what increased hitting distances mean for the game of golf, but we thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at driving distance numbers in golf’s modern era.

It’s clear that a mix of better technology, better athletes and more pristine agronomy have paved the way for where we stand now—but how exactly did it evolve to reach this point?

The Early Years of Recorded Distances

The PGA Tour has kept driving distance stats dating back to 1980 when Dan Pohl led with a 274-yard average.

While methods for tracking distance have grown more advanced over the years because of ShotLink, the PGA Tour has continued to use only two holes per round to measure driving distance. They are both holes where players are basically guaranteed to be using a driver off the tee.

Acushnet 2023 Sales Reach $2.4 Billion

Titleist’s parent company sales show a five-percent increase over 2022Net profit for the year is down slightly to $198.4 millionGrowth paced by double-digit growth in golf ball salesTitleist golf club sales are up eight percent

The Acushnet 2023 Sales and Financial report tells us some fascinating things about how golf’s No. 2 company stacks up against the runaway sales leader, Topgolf Callaway.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, depending on how you keep score, Acushnet may not be golf’s No. 2 company.

Because, depending on how you keep score, Acushnet could be considered No. 1.

It all depends on which set of top-line numbers you look at and which set of bottom-line numbers you look at. Bigger may not always be better, but it’s always bigger.

If that sounds squirrelly to you, you’re not alone. But before we dig into this all, let’s pause one moment for our traditional sales report disclaimer:

What Does a Pure Iron Shot Feel Like to You?

Feel is a difficult word to define for golfers.

Unlike many aspects of golf equipment, feel is subjective and emotional. There is a distinct challenge to pin down what feel means to each person, even for the best players in the world.

That was the impetus for this three-part “Finding Feel” docuseries from Titleist, a short trio of videos that explores the concept of feel and what that means to golfers.

As a golf nerd who lives for these kinds of 19th hole discussions, I was quickly hooked watching these clips. It’s a topic golfers are passionate about, regardless of how gear-crazy we are.

Titleist puts out surveys every year asking golfers what they want from their irons. Every year, the top response is feel.

John Daly Is Playing Sub 70

If you’re surprised to learn that John Daly is playing Sub 70 irons and wedges on the PGA TOUR Champions circuit, you’re not alone.

The news came as a big surprise to Sub 70 owner Jason Hiland.

“It was at the Champions Tour event at TPC Sugarloaf last spring,” Hiland tells MyGolfSpy. “It’s on Golf Channel and, all of a sudden, my phone starts blowing up. He has our stuff in his bag. I had no idea.”

The story of how Sub 70 irons and wedges made it into Daly’s bag starts with a knee replacement and a chance encounter at the driving range. Maybe the most remarkable aspect of this story is that zero money is changing hands.

That’s right. Daly doesn’t have a contract with Sub 70 and isn’t angling for one. He’s playing Hiland’s gear for one reason and one reason only.

Phil Mickelson Tests LAB Putter at LIV Tournament

Say what you will about Phil Mickelson—and you can say a lot—but he isn’t boring or conventional.

Neither is the putter he has in the bag during practice this week at LIV Golf’s Jeddah tournament.

The six-time major champion has been spotted testing the LAB Golf DF3 putter, one of the most striking putters in golf. The model recently became available to consumers.

Mickelson’s DF3 is 35 inches with a 71-degree lie angle (press #2, 3-degree grip, TPT shaft).

Mickelson has been partial to blades throughout his career, including when he won the 2021 PGA Championship using an Odyssey “Phil Mickelson” blade prototype with a SuperStroke Pistol GT Tour CounterCore grip.

Five Iron: The Future of Indoor Golf

It’s not hyperbole to say golf is a major commitment. Not only does the sport cost a pretty penny for everything from equipment and apparel to green fees, it also takes up a lot of time. And, after all, time is money.

Both of these barriers to entry are magnified significantly when attempting to play in metropolitan markets like New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles. Not only is actually playing more expensive, but just getting to a course can take up to an hour or more, which can tack on an extra couple of hours to your outing.

With golf more popular than ever (41.1 million Americans age six and older played in 2022 according to the National Golf Foundation), accessibility is a major key to not only continue to quench that thirst but provide opportunities for further growth in the game.

That’s where Five Iron comes in. Founded in 2017 in New York City, the technology-backed indoor urban golf experience brings the game to your backyard and other places it couldn’t otherwise exist.

“There are so many barriers to entry in golf—the time it takes, the cost and maybe it’s just intimidating,” says Five Iron Chief Marketing Officer Jed Lewis. “That’s why we’re trying to be in the most convenient locations—metropolitan areas—so that people have access to it and they can come on their lunch hour or before work.”

Eastside Golf Is Doing It Their Own Way

Among the numerous benefits of the explosive growth golf has seen recently are the creativity and talent that newcomers are injecting into the game. One of the many brands bringing that excitement is Eastside Golf, committed to making the game accessible and approachable to youth as well as people considering taking up the game for the first time.

A Lifelong Pursuit

Starting his golf career at the tender age of six, Eastside founder Olajuwon Ajanaku eventually earned a golf scholarship at Morehouse College in his native Atlanta, where he and his team won the 2010 PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship (by a whopping 20 strokes).

After school, he pursued professional golf but was forced to step away due to the exorbitant costs of supporting himself through tournament play. In 2019, after a few years working in finance, he couldn’t resist golf’s siren song and decided to give pro golf another shot.

During the process of pitching himself to potential sponsors, Earl Cooper, his former Morehouse teammate and now PGA professional, encouraged him to put his logo on a T-shirt. Following a compliment-laden jaunt through downtown Detroit wearing one of his tees, Ajanaku knew his design had some juice to it.

Next thing he knew, he and Cooper were en route to the 2020 PGA Show with thousands of products already sold and over a dozen designs that would eventually become Eastside Golf.

DIY: SIMULATOR AND HITTING AREA BUILDS

Indoor simulators have revolutionized the way golf enthusiasts practice and play the sport, bringing virtual courses into your home or other indoor area. With advancements in technology, there now is a wide range of golf simulator builds catering to every golfer’s needs and preferences.

Whether you’re a seasoned golfer looking to refine your skills or a passionate beginner eager to learn, come along with us as we explore the fascinating world of golf simulators and help you start planning your own.

The key is planning before building

Building a dedicated space for your golf simulator involves careful planning and consideration. First and foremost, the space should be large enough to accommodate a full swing without any obstructions. Ensure the ceiling height is adequate to accommodate your swing and the projection screen without any interference. Proper lighting is essential as lighting can affect certain launch monitor readings and the look of your projected picture (if you are using a projector). There are ways to utilize a smaller space but you may be restricted to using only your shorter irons.

The next two points are not critical but can truly enhance your space. Soundproofing the space can be advantageous so you don’t disturb the entire household when using your simulator. Proper temperature control is important to keep the atmosphere comfortable during practice sessions.

By focusing on these key points before starting your project, you can create the optimal golf simulator space for your needs and budget that enhances your practice sessions and provides an enjoyable experience.
