Slow play is an issue golf has wrestled with for decades.

And when it comes to the PGA Tour, the glacial pace of play hurts the viewing experience while altering the integrity of the competition itself.

For ages, the Tour has mostly ignored slow play. It has handed out fines, anonymously, while almost never penalizing players with added strokes during tournaments.

As Collin Morikawa said prior to this week’s Players Championship, that strategy hasn’t worked. “We make so much money and some guys, frankly, couldn’t care less about it.”

But after many, many years of failing to address slow play, the Tour has finally announced tangible measures to get players moving.

Why is that so pervasive?

We tested the PING G440 LST, G440 SFT and G440 MAX in our 2025 Best Golf Driver test alongside the PING G430 MAX 10K, last year’s top-performing driver. This allowed us to see how the new G440 lineup stacks up against its predecessor and whether the G430 MAX 10K still holds its place among the best. If you’re considering a new PING driver in 2025, here’s everything you need to know to make the right choice.

PING G440 2025 driver results

The PING G440 LST is the third-best driver of 2025 and the highest-performing of the PING G440 series. It was long but also one of the most forgiving (or consistent) drivers of 2025.

Another top-10 driver from PING was the G440 SFT, which finished seventh place overall. The SFT is one of the most accurate drivers of 2025 but with that accuracy, you’ll have to give up a few yards of distance. The SFT’s carry distance is about four yards shorter on average than the LST.

The third PING G440 driver in this test was the G440 MAX. The MAX struggled with distance and forgiveness, bringing its overall ranking down into the lower half of the test.

As the 2024 Best Golf Driver winner, the PING G430 MAX 10K was included in the 2025 test to compare it to the latest releases.

A bogey feels recoverable. Sometimes, you can even make a “good” bogey. But double bogeys are different. Now you need two birdies to erase it and your hope of posting the low round of the day starts to fade. The key is to keep double bogeys off the scorecard. Here are some practical tips to help you do it

Play from the correct tees

If you have lost distance or your skill level does not justify playing from the back tees, it’s time to accept reality and move up. Playing from tees too long for your carry distances makes it even harder to hit greens in regulation. You will force long irons and hybrids into your approaches and bring more hazards into play.

Stop turning one bad shot into two

Every golfer hits bad shots during a round. The key is avoiding the “hero” recovery shot that leads to a double. If your ball is in the heavy rough or the woods, take the safe route out and focus on getting up and down.

Trying to squeeze a shot through a tight window or hitting a knockdown shot you are uncomfortable with only adds unnecessary strokes. Think through your options, choose the shot with the highest success rate and return to a safe position.

Chipping out of trouble can result in a bogey which is much better than letting one bad swing turn into a double or worse.
