Woods commits to pro-am in run-up to The Open

Tiger Woods has committed to play in the JP McManus Pro-Am in Ireland, held 10 days before the start of The Open.

PXG 0311 GEN5 and 0311 XF GEN5 Fairway Woods and Hybrids

PXG has announced 0311 GEN5 fairway woods and hybrids. The new lineup features two models (0311, 0311XF).Retail price is $379 for each.

As expected, the PXG 0311 GEN5 launch includes new fairway wood and hybrid models. With that said, part of the story revolves around requisite features and benefits. New materials, different weighting schemes and a revamped geometry. That sort of thing. But with PXG, there’s always something else.

Subtext. Nuance. Whatever you want to call it. Once upon a time, PXG founder Bob Parsons likened his upstart golf brand to that of luxury automaker Ferrari. But that was pre-pandemic.

Now we must consider whether PXG can exist as both a value-driven (the 0211 driver is $229) and premium-priced brand ($500 milled wedges). Naysayers and critics already have their answer. But they were wrong before. We will file this one under the “topic for another day” tab for now.

That aside, let’s dive into PXG’s 0311 GEN5 fairway woods and hybrids.

PXG 0311 GEN5 Irons (0311 T, 0311 P, 0311 XP)

The PXG 0311 GEN5 iron family includes three models (0311 T, 0311 P, 0311 XP).According to PXG, GEN5 irons are longer and more forgiving than their predecessors. An all-black “Black Label Elite” version is also available.Retail price is $349 each for chrome and $449 each for Black Label Elite.

Technically, PXG doesn’t have release cycles but that doesn’t mean the company has ever been content to sit on what it has. Its GEN4 lineup launched about a year and a half ago. By industry standards, more than enough time has passed to justify the release of the new PXG 0311 GEN5 irons.

Those close to the development of the new irons believe GEN5 represents the biggest model-to-model advancement in the company’s history. And while that’s the kind of bravado that accompanies nearly every product release, the jump from GEN4 to GEN5 is certainly the most intriguing I’ve seen from the company to date.

Let’s dig in.

PXG 0311 GEN5 Iron Construction

It’s not the most fascinating stuff. It’s also not likely to be the reason you buy (or don’t buy) the PXG 0311 GEN5 irons but I wanted to start with an overview of the construction of the PXG’s latest flagship irons.

PXG 0311 GEN5 and 0311 XF GEN5 Drivers

PXG has announced 0311 GEN5 drivers, featuring two models. The 0311 GEN5 is designed for the majority of golfers while the 0311 XF GEN5 offers extreme forgiveness.Retail price is $499.

As the GEN5 product line which includes PXG 0311 GEN5 drivers launches, there’s a larger discussion to be had about PXG and how its business evolved during two years of COVID. Suffice it to say PXG is emerging from the pandemic as a dramatically different company from the one that went in. Chalk that up to a mix of necessity and opportunity.

While some of the lowest equipment prices we’ve ever seen have led some to believe otherwise, rumors of PXG’s demise have been greatly exaggerated. Again, that’s something we’ll explore in detail later. For now, take the release of the 0311 GEN5 lineup (and the opening of another handful of retail stores) as evidence that the company isn’t going belly up any time soon.

With that out of the way, let’s take a closer look at PXG’s 0311 GEN5 driver lineup.

PXG 0311 GEN5 Drivers – A New Naming Convention

It’s a small detail but with the GEN5 lineup, PXG has changed the naming convention of its products. Previously, drivers were 0811, fairways were 0341, hybrids 0317 and flagship irons 0311. The names were based on MOS (military occupational specialty) codes. Call it a nod to PXG CEO and Founder Bob Parsons’ dedication to the Marine Corps. A worthy tribute, perhaps, but for many, myself included, pretty damned confusing. I’ve been covering PXG since before it launched its first clubs and I could never commit model numbers for fairways and hybrids to memory.

Presidents Cup makes long-term commitment to Melbourne; set to return in 2028 and 2040

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FLORIDA, USA, and MELBOURNE, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA – The PGA TOUR today announced a long-term commitment to staging the Presidents Cup in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, with the biennial global team competition set to return to the iconic Sandbelt in 2028 and 2040. The 2028 Presidents Cup will mark the event’s fourth visit to Melbourne, matching Gainesville (Virginia, USA) for most Cups contested in one city.

The venue for the 2028 Presidents Cup will be announced at a later date. The Presidents Cup was staged at The Royal Melbourne Golf Club in its three previous trips to Melbourne (1998, 2011, 2019), with the International Team defeating the U.S. Team in 1998 under the leadership of the late Peter Thomson, while the U.S. Team claimed the Cup in 2011 and 2019.

“Since the Presidents Cup was first staged in Melbourne in 1998, Australia and its passionate fanbase have played a leading role in the growth of the Presidents Cup,” said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan. “As the event continues to visit new corners of the globe, we remain committed to a presence in Melbourne and the Sandbelt region, a place our players and fans around the world hold in high regard. Our partnership with State of Victoria and Visit Victoria has been a winning combination, and we’re thrilled with the support we’ve received from Premier Andrews in securing the 2028 and 2040 dates.”

NCGA Clubs: Harding Park Women’s Golf Club

Make Every Chip Count

Are you one of those golfers who occasionally yips your chips? You know those short chips near the green when you want to reach the putting surface and roll out to the hole. How often do you blade your chips across the green or bouncing your club into the ground before you brush you ball with a weak result? Imagine the strokes you could save if you could make every chip count.

I am one of those golfers who tends to miss-hit my chips when the pressure is on to lift my ball out of deep rough with a very short run-out to the hole. Of course, I also stub those easy chips from a tight lie about 20 yards from the green. I have purchased a few special chipping clubs that promise success but the weight of these heavier clubs have a different feel than my set of clubs, so my swing cadence is inconsistent and my results were poor.

Opportunity!
I found the perfect solution where I can use my existing clubs as well as the different lofts of each of my clubs. Danny Maude teaches the proper swing for chipping (the way Scottie Scheffler or any other pro chips), but he also provides this much simpler chipping method with a putting stroke. What could be easier to use for recreational golfers?

Learn to Make a Putting-Chip: By gripping down on any of your irons and standing with your eyes almost directly over your ball you can chip your ball from any lie to clear 1 to 20 feet of rough and settle on the putting surface.

Grip down your shaft so that your club is almost vertical and the toe is pointing to the ground (and the heel is raised off the ground). The shortened shaft makes it easier to hit and control the ball.

1/ For shorter chips with shorter run-outs, use your highest lofted wedge and for longer chips with longer run-outs you can select a lower lofted club like a 6 iron or an 8 iron.
2/ Setup with a normal putting stance with your feet close together but your hands will be placed on the lower end of your grip so that your shaft is almost pointing vertically from your face down to the ball.
3/ The toe of your club will be pointing on an angle down to your ball [Sorry about the image above as the grass is hiding the toe pointing down] as you will be swinging as you would with a putter (with a flat leading wrist) to lift your ball with the TOE of your club. Use a limited backswing to chip your ball and let it run-out 1 to 35 feet across the green.
4/ You will have to experiment with different amounts of backswing and follow-through with each of your lofted clubs to sort out what works best for the air time and roll-out that you want to execute.

HOW WE TEST

After months of testing and millions of data points, we broke down the Best Drivers for a Hook for the 2022 season.

A hook is often considered the “better player” miss but that is small consolation if you are watching the ball sail OB.

While swing mechanics are always going to play the biggest role, modern driver designs can help keep the ball in play and in the fairway more often.

For this test, 35 golfers tested 38 different models over more than 400 individual sessions. Data was collected using Foresight GCQuad Launch monitors. To minimize variables, all testers hit Titleist Pro V1 golf balls. Outliers were removed and data was aggregated before scores were calculated.

PGA Tour betting tips for the 2022 RBC Heritage

The PGA Tour heads to Harbor Town this week, and our experts have everything you need to know to bet the RBC Heritage.

R.I.P. Shirley Spork

From Richard Goldstein’s NY Times remembrance:

Spork finished second in the 1962 L.P.G.A. Championship but never won on the women’s tour. Her legacy, apart from her role as a pioneer of the women’s pro game, lay in her tutoring countless women, from duffers to fledgling pros, and in creating schools to help would-be teachers pass on her knowledge to their own students.

Spork received the Ellen Griffin Rolex Award, the L.P.G.A.’s highest teaching honor, in 1998. She was inducted into the inaugural class of the L.P.G.A. Teaching and Club Professional Hall of Fame in 2000. She won the 2015 Patty Berg Award for contributions to women’s golf and was named the L.P.G.A. Teacher of the Year in 1959 and 1984.

In 1947, while attending Michigan State Normal College in Ypsilanti outside Ann Arbor, a teachers school now known as Eastern Michigan University, Spork won the first national intercollegiate golf championship for women. She graduated with a degree in physical education two years later.

During the 1950 golf season, she joined with leading women’s players, including Babe Didrikson Zaharias, Patty Berg, Louise Suggs, Betty Jameson and Marilynn Smith, to form the L.P.G.A. But in its early years, prize money was meager, the tournaments received little attention in the sports media, and the players jammed together in autos as they traveled around the country.

Quadrilateral: All 2022 Masters TV Numbers Are In

I might mention that we were the first to use Pinkerton’s at a sporting event. The club then had no fence around its property and, because of this, a considerable number of people saw no reason to buy a ticket to see our tournament. This is where Pinkerton’s come in handy. The deputies and police had too many personal friends, whereas the Pinkerton men played no favorites. CLIFFORD ROBERTS
