The Testing Opportunity: FlightScope Progression Series
FlightScope is a frontrunner in the personal launch monitor category, catering to diverse needs, abilities and budgets. FlightScope has consistently excelled in various MyGolfSpy Most Wanted testing seasons, securing high ratings and rankings for its Mevo range.
We selected three Forum member to put the entire FlightScope line of products to the test in this unique testing progression series. Testers started with the Mevo, progressed to the Mevo+, then added the Pro Package and Face Impact for the ultimate full-suite test that the Mevo+ provides.
Read on to get our testers’ impressions of FlightScope’s line of products and if they are worthy of your short list when looking at personal launch monitors.
Tester Expectations
FlightScope’s products are billed as accurate and affordable personal launch monitors that allow you to capture data about your swing and ball flight. You can then use this data to work on improving areas of your game to become a more consistent golfer.
Tester GolfSpy_BNG said of the Mevo+. “While like my two other fellow testers I’m looking to improve my game. I’m gonna concentrate a little more on the simulator side. I’m not a big range guy and don’t get into bashing a bucket of range balls…For me, the ability to play a round on the Mevo+, while trying to execute a shot instead of just hitting balls is HUGE.”
Tester GolfSpy_SHARK said: “I am not the best practice person. I can swing for a while and do not mind hitting 30-40 balls in a session but at the end of the day that can become boring (for me). This is where the simulator comes in, does the simulator add that extra boost for me for more effective practice?”
Tester Josh Parker’s approach for the Mevo+ included this. “Another advantage of the Mevo+ is the ability to utilize video with its multicam (4) option. You are able to connect up to three mobile devices along with the internal camera. All of this on the unit to capture all angles of your golf swing. The big question I have with this scenario is, can I connect both my Android phone and Apple iPad up to the unit at the same time? How can I use the video and data to make corrections in my swing?”
First Impressions
Our testers were impressed by the quality packaging the Mevo+ arrived in as well as the overall aesthetics of the unit. The Mevo+ provides a sleek and compact look with a bright white unit highlighted with red accents. This color scheme is used throughout their range of products.
Said tester GolfSpy_SHARK: “The unit seems super durable just like the MEVO which is great. The stand like I said in the video seems to be really well designed and sturdy.”
Josh Parke on the overall build of the unit: “The Mevo+ is absolutely amazing. Its compact size and packaging are perfect for putting it in the bag and heading to the range or perfect for the basement set up. For a full-size launch monitor, it packs a punch in a smaller frame and for me personally, I like that about this unit.”
GolfSpy_BNG said: “The size is a perfect blend of small but robust. It has the feeling that it is built to last. The zippered storage case is very nice and you just know the plus is protected.”
The Data: Standard Mevo+ Features
FlightScope says the Mevo+ provides “over 20 full swing and short game data parameters for ultimate game improvement and entertainment.” It also comes with 10 courses and 17 different practice ranges through E6 Connect, providing users with options for simulation play.
Our testers put the Mevo+ through its paces. Read on to see what they found when putting data accuracy to the test.
Tester GolfSpy_BNG on E6 Connect with the Mevo+: “Banging a ball on the range is great to hone in distances or compare clubs, but being able to play an actual round is what I’m looking for. The E6 software was great and definitely delivers where I want. The graphics are awesome even on my iPhone.”
Josh Parker on data accuracy: “I was very impressed with the accuracy of the Mevo+. Having hit quite a few times in front of a Trackman as well as having GPS on the golf cart, I am confident in my numbers from each club. I also know when I’m hitting range balls at my home course what the yardages come out to. The distances seem to be spot on with the Mevo+ for distance for the most part. I did have a few set up issues and varying numbers when it came to the woods in my bag, but again, I contribute these variances with my set up at the range.”
From GolfSpy_SHARK: “I know when I hit a good shot and what my general numbers should be. With that being said, I found the MEVO+ to be very accurate in what I would anticipate seeing on course.”
Mevo+ Pro Package and Face Impact Location
As part of this progressive test, our testers were given the opportunity to explore all that FlightScope has to offer for the Mevo+ line. This included their Pro Package, which is a software add-on that provides an additional 11 data points. These include club path, face to path and target, dynamic loft and more.
Face impact location was also included and provides both the vertical and horizontal location of each strike. Heat mapping visualization is also available for those who use a tablet for the FlightScope app. You will also have access to shot grouping, which allows you to see the impact location of each shot for your practice session.
Said Josh Parker: “Utilizing the Pro Package and Face Impact, I was able to quickly review the information in between shots. It helped to make small changes and continue with my practice rounds. I found that 90-95% of the time, the packages gave accurate data.”
From GolfSpy_SHARK: “Like the MEVO+ review, my biggest question was how accurate was the data that Pro and Face Impact were providing? For me, I found at the very least the face impact was very accurate. To test this, I used foot spray on the face of the club. Then just logged where the impact was on the spray and where it was on the FlightScope app. I found that there was almost no discrepancy.”
Pros and Cons of the Mevo+
While receiving overwhelmingly positive reviews from our testers, the Mevo+ wasn’t completely without some slight drawbacks. This is an excellent unit at its price point. However, the additional software add-ons were somewhat expensive in our testers’ opinion. Another theme our testers stressed is proper setup of the unit. While not necessarily challenging, it can provide inaccurate data readings if not set up exactly as required.
Josh Parker on some pros of the Mevo+: “If you are looking for a portable and accurate mid-tier unit that you can use both indoors and outdoors, the Mevo+ is a great option. With 20 data points to gather and analyze, you can really improve your swing and golf game.”
From GolfSpy_SHARK: “The Mevo+ is a very portable unit. My setup is not permanent, so I had to bring the unit in and out as I was going to use it. An added benefit if you are looking to have something to bring to the range.”
Play It or Trade It?
Not surprisingly, all testers opted to keep the Mevo+ in play for the foreseeable future. However, there were some caveats, especially if you’re not a golfer driven specifically by data.
GolfSpy_BNG: “There is no way this is going anywhere for me. I have always wanted a LM/Sim and it’s been everything I have hoped it would be with the small exceptions.”
Josh Parker: “Once you have the ability to digest numbers and how it affects your swing and ball flight, it makes you wonder how you ever improved before having the data. My plan is to continue utilizing the Mevo+. It helped me to improve my game and ultimately help me get down to my goal of becoming a scratch golfer.”
GolfSpy_SHARK: “The data is really good, and I am 100% keeping the equipment. BUT if I had to pay for the pro package and face impact at the tune of almost $1,300, I would have to decline. I do not feel it helps me at that cost.”
Closing Thoughts
The Mevo+ from FlightScope provides users with 20 data points, 10 golf courses and 17 driving ranges to choose from, powered by E6 Connect, at its base price. To enhance your experience, software add-ons are available with their Pro package and Face Impact Location package. All making for a data-packed home launch monitor option. It received strong overall grades from our testers, with scores of 92, 96, and 96 out of 100. If you are in the market for a home launch monitor/simulator, the Mevo+ is a very strong contender.
