The Best Putter Covers to Protect the Flat Stick
We want to talk about protecting the most temperamental club in the bag: your putter. If you doubt its proclivity for chaos, just ask Scottie Scheffler. With that in mind, we decided to round up the best putter covers you can buy. A putter can be an investment on par with a driver so you might want to think about what you’re using to keep it in pristine condition.
It’s imperative that you keep your putter safe from dings, scuffs and the general wear and tear that comes with sidling up alongside a bunch of irons and wedges which, of course, don’t know they should be respecting your putter’s precious personal space. Plus, who among us isn’t guilty of taking the putter cover off after the first hole and leaving it in the cart until we wrap up 18? Get a putter cover, for the love of Tiger.
These days, just about any putter cover provides protection and security, with the only real variable being the closure, which will either be Velcro or magnetic. The fun part, then, is deciding what kind of impression you want your cover to make. Your favorite sports team, your alma mater, a callback to your other favorite hobby—the options are endless. When in doubt, you can always just rock a cover made by the brand that makes your putter — there are some especially good ones for PINGheads.
We dropped some of our favorites below but there are so many more than we can cover here. Let us know who we missed in the comments (especially if you have a secret Etsy shop we need to know about).
The Best Putter Covers
CMC Design Headcover
The college logo putter cover is a mainstay for blade and mallet users. Peruse through the Golf Galaxy or PGA Tour Superstore and you’ll be able to find a cover with just about any college logo or, at the very least, one from your favorite major university sports team. For this story’s purposes, we chose the Badgers because of their proximity to Wisconsin’s stellar courses but you obviously can choose whichever school you love most.
Dormie Chevron Mallet Putter
One of our favorite golf accessory brands, Dormie, makes fine luxury covers that will last a lifetime. Their Chevron mallet putter cover is made with milled full grain leather, has a velvety-smooth liner and plenty of foam to keep your putter protected from whatever comes its way.
Odyssey 2024 Hawaii Headcover
For the Odyssey heads, this is one of the most fun options we found. Even if you find yourself fully landlocked, the ocean’s waves will mentally take you to your favorite track along the coast.
Saddle Up Mallet Putter Cover
Yeehaw! If a western motif gets you fired up, this is the cover for you. If you’re not enamored of the American West, Devereux has a couple of dozen other mallet and blade covers to choose from, all of which feature an ultra-secure, easy-to-use magnetic closure.
Private Reserve 2.0 Blade Putter
No list would be complete without Seamus, the brand behind some of the finest headcovers in the game. Each is made with meticulous detail and materials that are built to last. If you need convincing, Bandon Dunes tapped Seamus to make them a whole lineup of covers.
Eastside Golf Blade Headcover Khaki
Eastside Golf is one of our favorite emerging golf lifestyle brands so it’s no surprise their putter cover and it’s Swingman logo made our list. Its synthetic leather and quilted design give the cover a luxe feel and a secure fit over any blade putter (they also offer mallet covers).
PRG Originals Mallet Putter Headcover
You can’t go wrong with the Arnie logo. Rocking the umbrella logo provides a subtle nod to one of the game’s greatest players and will match just about any color scheme you already have going.
Scotty Cameron Headcover
Genuine Scotty Cameron putter covers are elusive but this one comes straight from the brand itself. The gray color is versatile and adds undeniable swag to your golf bag. For more playful Scotty covers, check out eBay or other secondhand sites where you’ll find a huge archive of covers worthy of the finest putters in golf.
Maxfli PU Leather Headcover
Maxfli made our driver cover list and they find themselves on this list as well thanks to easy-going vintage designs that work with any brand and any putter type. The blade cover above comes in multiple colors and the brand also offers mallet covers with similar designs that hark back to golf’s early days.
PING Blade Putter Cover
We told you PING made some great covers and this is just one example of many. For those who are constantly pining for a winter getaway to Scottsdale or Palm Springs, the Desert Rule cover will be a pleasant reminder of the warm sun and dry air, even if you’re just squeezing in a wet spring round at your local muni.
BARSTOOL Sports Putter Cover
The breakfast ball is a tried-and -rue golf tradition so why not pay homage to the mulligan of all mulligans with this putter cover from Barstool’s Fore Play podcast squad. When things go awry on the first tee, let your putter cover be a reminder that you are still on the golf course and not in the office.
