Wilson Irons: Model By Model

Perhaps one of the most underrated iron companies in golf, Wilson has a long and successful history of making irons which have been in the bags of many major winners in the past. Their Wilson lineup of irons may not be as robust as others but they still have models to fit the needs of most, if not all, golfers. In this Model-by-Model review, we will highlight all the current models available from Wilson.

Wilson Release Cycle:

Wilson has a typically longer release cycle than other manufacturers. We do not see a new series of irons every year but typically between 24 to 36 months. To help with consistency, the family of irons will normally release in alternate years so there is not a large gap between their overall releases.

As a recent example, Wilson released their Dynapower range of irons in early 2023 and, in 2024, Wilsonreleased the Dynapower Forged and Wilson Staff models.

Key Technologies for Wilson:

Taking center stage is the Wilson Fit AI. Launched in December 2023, it is their new way to fit golfers into the proper shaft and model in only five swings. MyGolfSpy staff writer John Barba goes into full details here (a must-read) but the short version is this.

“The Wilson Fit AI kit features a special fitting club with a Blast Motion swing sensor built into the grip. When connected to the app, the sensor picks up 12,000 swing data points and compares those points to the 325 million swings in the Blast Motion library. All that information goes through Wilson’s proprietary AI system to fit you into a Wilson iron. It also recommends the best shaft for you as well as length and lie.”

As for clubhead technology, Wilson has a few staple technologies..

Power Holes 3.0 – These are slotted holes at the bottom of the clubs which are filled with a black material. This allows the bottom of the face to flex a little more to retain ball speed and help improve launch conditions. This is not available on all iron models or even all irons within a model’s range.

Fluid Feel Hosel – A bored piece of the hosel to help move weight to better areas for more forgiveness and better ball speeds. Once again, this is not available on all models but only included on models where it is most beneficial.

Wilson Staff Model Blades

Release Date: Jan. 24, 2024

Meant For: The elite ball striker and low-handicap golfer. A pure blade for the best of the best.

Available Irons: 4-PW

About the Wilson Staff Model Blades Irons:

Made for golfers with elite ball-striking capabilities, these irons are composed of a forged 8620 carbon steel. One of the softest materials available for irons, it provides an exceptional feel. Wilson also includes their precise toe-weighting system that balances the club to help eliminate the low-left shot and increase forgiveness.

The Fluid Feel Hosel redistributes weight towards the toe and a precision-milled face aids in keeping spin consistent while adding stopping power for those precision shots.

These are a blade iron and look the part with minimal offset, a thin top line and relatively small toe-to-heel footprint. These irons will appeal to many golfers but not those looking for added forgiveness.

Wilson Staff Model CB Irons

Release Date: Jan. 24, 2024

Meant For: The better ball striker and lower-handicap golfer. A forged cavity-back iron with more forgiveness while still allowing for workability and control.

Available Irons: 4-PW

Shafts: Steel

About the Wilson Staff Model CB Irons:

A slightly more forgiving model than the blade version, the Wilson Staff Model CB Irons include all the same technologies, just in a slightly larger package. The cavity-back design pushes some weight to the outside of the clubhead, creating more forgiveness, while the inclusion of the Fluid Feel Hosel and precise toe weighting are all contributing factors in making this iron more forgiving.

The same precision-milled face once again helps with consistency in spin and control.

With slightly more offset and a llittle thicker topline, these irons are a very appealing package and should not be overlooked by those looking for premium feel in a slightly more forgiving package.

Wilson Dynapower Forged Irons

Release Date: March 5, 2024

Meant For: A player’s distance iron with forged face, this iron is suitable for a wide range of golfers: low- to mid-handicaps or even higher handicaps looking for forgiveness and distance with workability being secondary.

Available Irons: 5-GW (4 iron RH only)

Shafts: Steel/Graphite

About the Wilson Dynapower Forged Irons:

The newest iron includes the most technology offered by Wilson. To start, they are made from 8620 forged carbon steel with their new AI face technology. This face has variable thicknesses to allow for faster ball speeds and more forgiveness across the face. That, combined with their Power Holes 3.0 in the 4- through 7-irons, allows for improved launch and spin characteristics in the longer irons.

As a multi-material design, Wilson has pushed discretionary weight from the heel to the toe, allowing for greater MOI and higher launch.

The Wilson Dynapower Forged iron is a great all-around performer that checks a lot of boxes for many golfers. Packed with technology and an inviting footprint, it is not too big or too small and should suit the eye for any golfer looking at the player’s distance category.

Release Date: Feb. 15, 2023

Meant For: Mid- to higher-handicaps who covet forgiveness and distance over all else. A game-improvement iron available in men’s and women’s designs.

About the Wilson Dynapower Irons:

Introduced last season, the Dynapower iron range brought back a traditional name to the modern era. Available in graphite and steel options as well as both men’s and women’s designs, the Dynapower irons have various technologies to help improve their overall performance.

Power Holes 3.0 are present in all irons to help with forgiveness and ball speeds on low strikes while an AI face helps with consistency and maximum forgiveness across all other areas of the face. These work together to make one of Wilson’s most forgiving and longest irons to date.

The Dynapower irons include discretionary weight moved to the toe to further push its forgiveness level.

While being a game-improvement iron, the offset and topline are kept to a medium level to help provide a broader appeal. Those who like a thinner topline may be put off but the majority of golfers will see an iron that is neither too big nor too small, just right.

Wilson Launch Pad 2 Irons

Release Date: Feb. 24, 2022

Meant For: Mid- to high-handicaps searching for maximum distance and forgiveness. Those who prefer a larger iron with more offset and thicker profile.

Available Irons: 5-SW

Shafts: Steel/Graphite

About the Wilson Launch Pad 2 Irons:

The oldest iron in Wilson’s  current lineup, the Launch Pad holds its own in the uper game-improvement space. These irons are bigger, no question, with a large hollow body for maximum launch and forgiveness.

Another key for the Wilson Launch Pad irons is the sole design. A large sole with trail and leading edge relief helps keep the club out of the grass for less digging and smoother feel through the top of the grass.

There is also a greater amount of offset included with the Launch Pad irons that helps with those who struggle with a slice and, in some cases, can help get the ball in the air.

Slower swingers or those looking for an iron with maximum forgiveness and distance should be giving these a serious look.
