Under Pressure: Tom Kim Contends For Medal As Military Exemption Looms

The Olympic golf competition is a little like the velodrome cycling races in which the competitors cruise and feint until a ferocious dash to the finish line. Halfway through the golf at these Games, a rain-softened Le National has offered little resistance as the best players in the world jockey for position. Atop the leaderboard at -11 are three of the sweetest swingers in the game: Xander Schauffele, Hideki Matsuyama and Tommy Fleetwood. Jon Rahm is in fourth place, two shots from the podium. Lurking are big-time talents Joaquin Niemann (-6), Scottie Scheffler (-6), Matt Fitzpatrick (-6), Jason Day (-5) and Rory McIlroy (-5), among others.

During Saturday’s third round, the peloton will begin pedaling harder. When it comes to Olympic golf, fourth place has the same meaning as 60th. There are no cash payouts to protect, no FedEx Cup points to hoard. Aggressive play now borders on mandatory.

“As the week goes on, it becomes more of a mental challenge,” says Fleetwood. “Obviously you know that [the top] three places are what is going to decide your week. Usually, you finish top five, top 10, you’ve had a great week, but [here] it don’t mean anything.”

This rare opportunity to play for your homeland and for a medal offers new layers of pressure but one player on the leaderboard faces a unique stress-fest. Tom Kim, tied for fifth at -8, is playing for his future. The cherubic 22-year-old is representing South Korea where every healthy adult male under 35 must serve a compulsory 21-month stint in the military. Winning a Masters or U.S. Open will not exempt him from service under the Orwellian-sounding Military Manpower Administration. Neither will winning a FedEx Cup or Race to Dubai. The only way Kim—the youngest three-time winner on the PGA Tour since Tiger Woods—can play his way out of this career abyss is by winning an Olympic medal. (A gold at the Asian Games, which has traditionally been a competition for amateurs, also counts. In 2023, pros were allowed to play and Kim’s countryman Sungjae Im, then 25, and Si Woo Kim, 28, took advantage of this window by leading Korea to victory in the team competition; there is rumbling that the Asian Games will go back to ams-only in the near future.)

The looming military stint is Kim’s least-favorite topic and he bats away queries with curt platitudes. Following his second-round 68, I asked Kim how he can not think about the larger meaning of an Olympic medal. “Good question,” he said with a tight smile. “I’m just trying to focus on my game. I’m a competitor and we all play for the same thing. It’s just golf. So I’m just trying to put my head down and play.”

Bettinardi Remix BB1 Limited-Edition Putter

Bettinardi’s new Remix limited-edition putter line remixes the components of their stock putter lines. The latest BB1 Remix features a non-stock finish, face milling and alignment scheme.Remix putters are limited in number and available at Bettinardi.com with a MSRP of $500.

In 2023, Bettinardi celebrated their 25th anniversary by releasing a limited-edition putter every month. It was a novel way to celebrate a significant milestone and no doubt took a healthy amount of work to get that limited-edition dozen to market. I figured that it was a “once in a quarter-century” kind of project.

I was mistaken.

During 2024, Bettinardi has continued to roll out limited-edition putters at a nearly once-a-month pace. Though the release fanfare for these new limited-edition putters is far more muted than it was for the anniversary putters, their release pacing is similar.

The new Bettinardi Remix line has, for the most part, flown under the radar this year. Today, it’s time to change that.

What has Bettinardi remixed?

The new Bettinardi Remix putter line takes a different approach to limited-edition than the 25th anniversary line did. Where the 25th anniversary line was all about showcasing putters from Bettinardi’s history, the Remix line consists entirely of their current putter models.

Ball Lab: 2024 Snell Prime 3.0

MyGolfSpy Ball Lab is where we quantify the manufacturing quality and consistency of golf balls. Ball lab does not infer durability or guarantee your performance. Today, we’re reviewing the 2024 Snell Prime 3.0.

The 2024 Snell Prime 3.0 and its sibling, the Prime 2.0 and Prime 4.0, are the result of the “phoenix rising from the ashes” after founder Dean Snell scrapped the prior generation, MTB Prime and MTB Prime X. Snell set out to fix the ills of the prior models and, hence, the genesis of the new line-up.

Snell says the Prime 3.0 features a “new core for high ball speed and low driver spin for maximum distance” as well as a new 332-dimple XV3 urethane cover to provide “a soft feel” with “ultimate short game control and durability.” This new package is available in white and yellow.

Like the others in the Prime series, the 3.0 is fitted according to 7-iron playing distance. Snell says it is “designed for a wide range of mid swing speed players with 7-iron distances of 120-170 yards.”

Bringing the new Snell Prime 3.0 to market was more than just a redesign. Prior to the first golf balls ever rolling of the production line, the Launch Technologies factory in Taiwan burned to the ground resulting in Snell having to overcome yet another challenge. The current Prime series is manufactured in China.

First Look: Stix Golf Compete Driver

I’ll admit it. I am a fan of Stix Golf and I am rooting for them. They’re continuing to improve their footprint in the golf industry and are finding new ways to compete.

Nowadays, anyone can design, produce, and sell a driver. We see top manufacturers (with years of experience and success) do this with relative ease. Additionally, there are several direct-to-consumer manufacturers who have seen success and continue to build their resumes with driver production at the forefront.

Stix Golf is diving into the pool with their latest release: the Compete Driver.

Stix Golf Compete Driver overview

How does the Compete Driver differ from the drivers Stix Golf offers in their complete golf club sets?

For starters, the Compete Driver is adjustable. This is a game-changer for Stix. Most OEMs offer adjustability with their driver lineups. For example, in our 2024 Most Wanted Driver test, 36 of 37 drivers are adjustable.

Olympic Golf Finally Gets The Juice It Deserves

Eight years into the modern Olympic golf experiment, the event finally found its voice during a sweaty, giddy first round of these Games. In 2016, when golf returned to sports’ biggest stage after a 112-year absence, the soundtrack was howls of protest from traditionalists and mealy-mouthed excuses from the top players who refused to see the big picture (Rory Mcllroy later admitted the noisy concerns about the Zika virus were just a convenient alibi). The 2021 Tokyo Games were played in deafening silence with fans banished because of a global pandemic.

But on Thursday at Le Golf National, Olympic golf was embraced as never before. A crowd of 25,000 strong made the journey to a distant suburb to give the competition the juice it deserves, at last. The fans serenaded the players with cheers, chants and the occasional national anthem. Practitioners of the loneliest sport could finally feel in their bones that they are playing for something larger than themselves.

Of his opening tee shot, Min Woo Lee said, “I had kind of like a tear in my eye because I made the team and I’m representing Australia. I didn’t know I was going to react like that. But it was pretty cool. I think that just shows how much it means to me. I think a lot of people say, ‘Why is golf an Olympic sport?’ I think for myself: now I know why.”

Thorbjørn Oleson of Denmark, an eight-time winner on the European Tour, said, “It’s a very different atmosphere from any other tournament. To see all the different flags, to hear people singing their anthems, it gives you a little bit of goosebumps.”

Joaquin Niemann of Chile (who is in third place with a 65, two strokes behind leader Hideki Matsuyama), added, “It does feel more special than any other golf tournament.”

Three Holes That Will Decide Who Wins Gold at the Olympic Games

We asked the team at Shot Scope to pull on-course data from their database of 350 million shots for Le Golf National, the venue for golf at the Olympic Games, to see how the amateur golfer plays the course.

Le Golf National is no stranger to hosting big events. The 2018 Ryder Cup took place on the Albatross Course where Team Europe was victorious.

The French Open has been held at Le Golf National (on and off) since 199 but has been there every year since 2002 so we can see how the pros play the course compared to amateurs.

Three holes that will cause drama – 4, 17, 18

Despite many holes having some form of water feature, one of the hardest holes on the Albatross course does not have any.

The fourth hole, a long par-4, measuring at 486 yards in the 2023 French Open, played 0.17 strokes over par, making it the fourth-hardest hole of the week.
