Limited Release: adidas MC87 4D Golf Shoes

One brand that never fails to innovate within the shoe space is adidas.

Take, for example, 4D. Introduced in 2017 and later receiving a whole mainstream release, adidas 4D technology is objectively one of the bigger innovations in footwear in the last decade.

Once reserved for running and training shoes, 4D has made its way to a golf shoe. What the heck is 4D and why should I care if it’s on my golf shoe?

That’s why I’m here. Let’s take a deeper dive into this brand new model (and technology) courtesy of the Brand with Three Stripes.

Foreword to 4D

Admittedly, adidas 4D technology is much more intricate than I can understand. But there are a few key points you need to know about adidas 4D. It is, after all, a heck of a technological advancement, in my opinion.

Adidas 4D is essentially a 3D-printed midsole. A deeper dive reveals the actual midsole printing process is done using light and oxygen in what’s called Digital Light Synthesis. The biggest advantage of this new manufacturing process is the ability to create delicate and intricate lattices, the basis for adidas 4D midsole design.

Key Takeaways:

What is a template hole?

For those of us not familiar with the elements of golf course design, a template hole is an iconic hole design that is often incorporated into new courses. Writing that out, it makes sense. Imagine that you had a plastic template for drawing circles. With that template, you could draw the same circle over and over, wherever you wished to draw it.

The template concept gets tweaked a bit when you talk about golf holes. Unlike the circle example above, the golf hole still needs to fit into the landscape. As such, the original template must be modified for a specific course while maintaining the key elements of the original template. The most famous template hole is likely the Road Hole at St Andrews. Versions of the Road Hole exist at other courses, modified as needed for the location.

After learning this, I couldn’t help but wonder if I’ve played on any of these template holes. There are more than 20 of them, after all. As it turns out, I played a whole bunch of template holes when I played the Old Macdonald course at Bandon Dunes.

Appropriately, that course was named after and designed to honor Charles Blair Macdonald, the course architect who brought inspiration from iconic holes from around the world to his design of the Chicago Golf Club in 1896.

TaylorMade's Spider Tour putters: 3 things you need to know

One of the most recognizable putter shapes in the history of the industry returns to anchor TaylorMade's extensive Spider Tour Series lineup.

TaylorMade 2023 Spider Tour Series Putters

TaylorMade announced the new Spider Tour Series putters today, based on their popular Spider Tour and Spider Tour X mallet putter models. The series will include new versions of those popular mallets as well as completely new Spider Tour V and Spider Tour Z putters.

What You Need to Know

TaylorMade is releasing a new series of putters based upon their iconic Spider Tour mallet. The line features two classic head shapes and three new models. All Spider Tour Series putters feature new and classic TaylorMade putter technologies. At shops Oct. 27 for $349.99

There will even be one more in the series: the Spider Tour Series S, arriving next spring.

Rereleasing an old, popular putter model is a dicey scenario. On one hand, you are providing customers with an updated version of a putter they love. When you grab one of these and roll it in the shop, it’s like reconnecting with an old friend.

On the other hand, re-releasing old putters has potential pitfalls. First, you can’t just roll out exactly the same old model. You need to tweak the design enough to make it seem new but not so much that it loses the flavor of the original.

The other danger is that, if you keep rolling out the same model year after year, you run the risk of being branded by the consumer as lazy. Giving it a new paint scheme will not be enough.
