Mickelson to miss Masters for first time since 1994

Phil Mickelson will not compete in the Masters next month, marking the first time since 1994 that he will miss the tournament at Augusta National.

Rotation Drill

Most of us should be working towards better rotation through impact. One of the biggest differences I see between the everyday golfer and the pros is the amount of hip rotation that has occurred at impact. What I call the “two cheek” impact position where both butt cheeks are visible from down the line at impact. This drill will help! Take a look…

Notes:

Grab an 8 or 9 iron and set up to the ball which initially should be on a tee.

Wind about halfway back into the backswing and pump down to where the shaft is approximately parallel to the ground. Here you should feel your chest and hips as open as you can possibly get them.

After a few rehearsals give the ball a light hit and slowly build up speed while incorporating this sense into full speed swings.

Sam Burns withdrew from the Dell Match Play on Monday, one day after becoming a back-to-back winner at the Valspar Championship.

Walker Cup Gets Moved To Even Numbers Years Starting In 2026

The move of the biennial team matches to even number years implies the schedule impact of golf in the Olympics and a chance to help the World Amateur Team Championships apparently motivated the decision.

The announcement sets up matches in 2025 at Cypress Point and in 2026 at a UK venue to be determined, with previous announced U.S. venues Bandon Dunes and Oakmont moving up a year.

For Immediate Release from the R&A:

THE R&A AND THE USGA MOVE THE WALKER CUP MATCH TO EVEN YEARS BEGINNING IN 2026

21 March 2022, St Andrews, Scotland: The R&A and the USGA today announced that the Walker Cup match will be contested in even years from 2026 onwards.

2022 MOST WANTED PLAYER’S IRON

OUR JOB IS YOUR GAME

Player’s irons don’t offer the same measure of technology that you’ll find in other iron categories. Instead, the category offers the target golfer a compelling blend of precision and craftsmanship with a side of harsh truth. Well-struck shots are often rewarded, while mishits are punished—often severely. While stronger players can benefit from designs in the player’s iron category, the majority of double-digit handicap golfers will be better served elsewhere.

For our 2022 player’s iron test, we’ve focused on models added to the market since our last test. As will become standard practice, we’ve also included the winner of last year’s test.

MOST WANTED SCORING

We have reformulated our 2022 Most Wanted results to a 100-point scoring system. This new system better identifies golf clubs to potentially help you shoot lower scores.

For player’s irons, we’ve split our key metrics into three categories.

Britain's Georgia Hall carded a one-under-par 71 to win the Saudi Ladies International in Jeddah on Sunday, and her second Ladies European Tour title.

Asian Tour Loses Its London Stop Before It Was Ever Played

The first requisite of all tactics in match play is to show your opponent no sign of weakness. You may be two down and scared stiff that you are going to top the next one into a cross-bunker, but for Heaven’s sake don’t let him see it. JOHN STOBBS

Reader R pointed out that the Asian Tour schedule no longer features the previously June stop near London because that event is now on the LIV Invitational circuit’s 2022 schedule.

The Asian Tour announcement for the new “international series” was on February 1 and the London stop was the centerpiece for growing the tour along with an additional $100 million from the Saudi sugar fund.

"We are on the threshold of a new era for Asian golf," said Cho Minn Thant, Asian Tour commissioner and CEO.

"The International Series is a new upper-tier of elite events, the likes of which the region has not seen before, that will mark the start of a phenomenal period of growth for the Asian Tour.

Distances That Were Supposed To Level Off Are Growing At A Steady Rate

The first requisite of all tactics in match play is to show your opponent no sign of weakness. You may be two down and scared stiff that you are going to top the next one into a cross-bunker, but for Heaven’s sake don’t let him see it. JOHN STOBBS

From the R&A/USGA 2021 Distance Report

No kidding, right? But there are also numbers showing the PGA Tour’s longest have leveled off again. So Mike Stachura considered the USGA/R&A distance report and boiled a key number that might justify not only a hard stand but the dreaded “r” word.

Then again, there is a fundamental difference between looking at the rate of growth in distance compared to the actual growth. In the last five years, distance on the PGA Tour is increasing at a rate of about a yard per year. That’s less than half what it was in the late 1990s and early 2000s, but more than double the rate from 1980-95. And when those increases are coming on top of a driving distance average that is in the mid-290s now compared to the low 260s then, that’s what has the ruling bodies concerned. It’s not the size of the distance gains, it’s that, at least to the ruling bodies, they don’t appear to be leveling off, despite all the equipment regulations. That’s especially concerning to them at a time almost two decades removed from their Joint Statement of Principles that declared “any further significant increases in hitting distances at the highest level are undesirable.”

Norman On Five Clubs Pod: Grow The Game, Grow The Game, Grow The Game

Appearing on Gary Williams’ Five Clubs podcast, LIV Golf Commish Greg Norman was pressed by the host on the financing behind his 8-event schedule. Sitting in front of the Sydney opera house and minus his ears, Norman did make one bit of news while producing pathetic answers on funding front.

This was an odd line to me for a series of eight, come-as-you go events for independent contractors.

“There are contracts, but I’m not going to give out any names on that,” Norman said when pressed on commitments to the league. He later said that invitations would be going out “very shortly.”

I get it that you need contract for your likeness and stuff, but here’s guessing the fine print deals with more than that. As in, a lack of independence.

As for the Saudi stuff, get your “grow the game” nonsense ready. But do chuckle when the Shark notes how the Saudis deep history of support for the game dates to 2019.

Old Soul: Revisiting The Ties Between Augusta National And St Andrews

I attribute the insane arrogance of the later Roman emperors almost entirely to the fact that, never having played golf, they never knew that strange chastening humility which is engendered by a topped chip-shot. PUTTER FITTING 101- K.I.S.S.

Putter Fitting 101

What was your first putter? I remember my first—a PING B60 knock-off. My grandma bought it for me in the mid-2000s. A bargain at $25. I used it from the eighth grade through high school. Memories were made with that putter, both sweet and bitter. More often, frustrating. I’m nostalgic just writing about it. I’m certain you might be, too, recalling your first. That’s the thing with putters. We form an overwhelming, everlasting bond with them. In the end, that might be our undoing, especially when it comes to shooting lower scores.

For me, times have changed. Shooting lower scores is my No. 1 goal and it should be yours. Back in 2010, when I graduated high school, I had zero comprehension of a putter fitting. It’s 2022 and there are still golfers who aren’t aware of putter fittings and the potential improvements they can produce.

This isn’t rocket science so let’s take a look at some key, simple ingredients that go into a putter fitting.

Toe Hang

Picture this. You have just been exposed to the game of golf and now you have to choose a putter. Right off the bat, most beginners probably won’t know what “toe hang” is. Let’s keep it simple.

Take a putter in your hand, balance it about three-quarters of the way down the putter shaft and let gravity take over. This is a simple way for anyone to estimate what their putter’s natural toe hang is. Give it a go.

The 4 Step Post Shot Routine

“It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” – Greek philosopher Epictetus

Golf mirrors life in so many ways, which is why the game is so great and there’s so much to it. One of those ways is having to deal with the frustrations and setbacks when things don’t go our way. In a game with such a fine line between success and failure, this is an inevitable part of our journey. How we respond to challenges and failure – in golf and in life – is a big factor in our long-term success and overall happiness.

Immediately after hitting a poor shot is one of those times. If we are not able to choose the best response, those initial feelings of disappointment can quickly turn into a loss of confidence and affect the mental state we bring to the next moment.

Picture the scene, you’re about to tee off on the first hole of a tournament. You’re feeling nervous and uncomfortable because this tournament means a lot to you, and you want to get off to a good start. The gathering of people around the tee box doesn’t help either. You take a deep breath and go through your pre shot routine but you make a tentative swing and the ball spins away and goes out of bounds. You’re a little frazzled by what just happened and despite your best efforts to calm yourself down, your re-load isn’t much better and finds the trees. There is a sinking feeling when you quickly realize you are staring a triple bogey or worse in the face. Not the start you wanted. I’m sure you’ve experienced something similar, we all have. How you deal with this feeling and reset yourself, can make or break your round.

Why is a Post Shot Routine important?
