Through the 2024 Mexico Open, the average putts per round on the PGA Tour is 29.23. With a Tour average score of 71.425, putts equate to approximately 41 percent of strokes per round on Tour this season.
With an average of four out of every 10 strokes in a round taking place on the green, there’s no truer expression in the game than “drive for show, putt for dough.”
While many amateurs are confident a shiny new Scotty Cameron putter for $450 will solve their putting perils, Golf Pride believes it’s engineered a much economical solution: the Reverse Taper grip.
Available beginning April 15 at retail and golf course locations as well as online, the $29.99 Reverse Taper grip flips the putter grip upside down. A slimmer upper half and a wider lower section anchor the top hand for stability while reducing tension in the lower hand for smooth acceleration through the putting stroke. The reverse width and weight also prevents micro-levers in the stroke to help golfers avoid flipping their wrists at impact.
“It’s a subtle reverse taper—it’s not crazy,” Golf Pride Chief Innovation Officer Andy Erickson said. “What we saw in the SAM PuttLab data is that it’s noticeably more square at impact across the board (compared to a parallel putter grip) for nearly every player we put through testing.”
Can you feel it? The golf season is fast approaching. That little groundhog predicted an early spring, and if golf ball sales are any indication, I think it’s coming to fruition.
There’s never been a better time to be a slicer. Most major brands are running slick deals on golf balls to help you gear up for the spring. Lost another one in the woods? No matter, it’s time to stock up and save big on your favorite golf balls.

There are few apparel collections that I look forward to more than the annual Arnold Palmer Collection from PUMA GOLF.
Perhaps it’s the famed Sportscenter commercial where Palmer shows off the secret to a perfect half-and-half ratio. Maybe it’s just the fact that he’s one of the greatest golfers of all time.
It’s weird. Any time I see that little umbrella logo, my wallet starts to feel a little lighter. By some chance of fate, my wife also starts to become a little angrier. I’m not seeing the connection.
PUMA Golf is no stranger to a good AP collection so this year’s rendition is worth a look.
The Shot Scope X5 GPS golf watch is getting a pretty massive update today. And it’s one that’s been long-anticipated.
The Edinburgh, Scotland-based company, MyGolfSpy’s official On-Course Partner, is unveiling full hole mapping for its flagship X5 GPS watch. Also included are a few new visual features that unlock Shot Scope’s stable of stats for use on the course.
“The addition of full hole maps to the X5 is something existing users can really make use of,’ says Shot Scope CEO David Hunter. “The bank of statistics they’ve already collected can be used during their round as they take on each hole.”
The firmware update is being rolled out today. It’s free to all existing Shot Scope X5 GPS watch users as well as new customers.
Full hole mapping isn’t anything new in the GPS golf watch game. With the new update, the Shot Scope X5 will expand upon the traditional front-middle-back distances to the green. It now will provide an aerial view of the hole, showing doglegs, bunkers and water hazards.
If you’re like me, you’re looking for any means available to improve at this great game of ours. Investing in lessons is probably the best way to get better quickly. Getting fitted for equipment is a very close second. Improving your physical capabilities through better overall fitness, strength and mobility is another.
But what about mental fitness?
Can you shave a few strokes if you improve how you use that space between your ears? Maybe learn a little more mental toughness? Absolutely. While by no means an exhaustive list, here are some things to consider for both immediate and long-term improvements to your mental game.
One of the main obstacles to maintaining a healthy and productive mental outlook and playing your best golf is your own expectations. I get it, maybe you’ve got a full-time job and other responsibilities but you’ve found a way to get in some practice reps. You’re possibly working out, perhaps even doing some speed training, and you’ve been vigilant about that mobility and flexibility routine. Perhaps you even get in some putting practice. The point is that, the demands of being a grown-up aside, you’re trying to improve and it can be extraordinarily frustrating when you don’t see the results when you get on the course.
I’m here to tell you that you’re hitting better shots than you think you are when you play golf if you are as dedicated to your golf game as I think you are (you’re reading this article, after all). Then I’m willing to bet you watch a little golf on TV. The problem with that is that you’ve likely unintentionally warped your perceptions of what a good golf shot looks like.
For many of us, winter is waning and golf season is on the horizon. Now is the time to start working on your game to have it primed for the start of the season. Will this latest Amazon find, the flat chipping discs, be the key to mastering your short game in 2024?
Golfers can lose strokes all over the course but a consistent short game can make or break your round. It can be a nightmare of fat chips, bladed wedges and everything in between. The short game portion of golf is a real challenge and honing this craft can help make rounds a heck of a lot more enjoyable.
Chipping discs! These aim to help perfect a golfer’s strike location for chipping and short game situations. Made of softer rubber, these sit flat on the ground and get airborne only with a perfect strike. Strike too low and you will be digging into the ground behind the ball. Swing too high and you will miss the disc entirely. The chipping discs can be played wherever a golfer can make a swing and can be used in different lies or situations.
I was looking at training aids and came across these. These came up on Amazon as one of their top choices with a 4.4-star rating on over a thousand reviews.
Let’s start with the good parts about the golf chipping discs. They do exactly what they are meant to do. They help hone in a strike and reward perfect strikes. Slightly thin, and they skid along the surface not going anywhere. Fat shots, well, they are just as you would expect. The club hits behind the chipping disc and into the turf or mat and the disc goes a short distance, if any at all.
