Oak Hill Country Club - Hole by Hole

Hole 1 - Par 4: A challenging opening hole that demands accuracy off the tee. It features a slight dogleg to the left, with a fairway bunker on the right side. The approach shot to the green is typically uphill, making club selection crucial.

Hole 2 - Par 5: A long par 5 that requires a well-placed tee shot to avoid fairway bunkers. The fairway narrows as you approach the green, making accuracy essential. The green is guarded by bunkers on both sides, and it slopes from back to front.

Hole 3 - Par 3: A mid-length par 3 that demands an accurate tee shot over a pond to a well-protected green. The green slopes from back to front, making it important to avoid being above the hole.

Hole 4 - Par 4: A straightaway par 4 with a narrow fairway. Bunkers on both sides of the fairway and near the green come into play, requiring precision on both the tee shot and approach.

Hole 5 - Par 4: A dogleg right par 4 with a fairway that slopes from right to left. The tee shot needs to favor the left side to have a clear approach to the green. The green is elevated and well-bunkered.

Q: Now that there are better graphite options for irons, will prices come down? – @richriker

Unlikely. Shaft companies effectively run two business models. When it comes to OEM sales (stock shaft) it’s a volume game. Charge a little but sell a whole lot.

For the consumer stuff, which includes premium offerings, upgrades, and the stuff sold through high-end fitting locations, it’s a margin game. Sell a little, charge a lot.

Much like you won’t be able to score a Ventus (or any other premium-priced shaft) for $100 anytime soon, premium graphite irons shafts will remain premium priced for the foreseeable future.

Q: Are DTC club & ball makers really helping golfers? Yes, they have quality equipment at much cheaper prices, but you can’t get fit for the majority and only a couple offer demos. Is this just an easier and cheaper way for golfers to play the club lottery? -@ssk77

If you want to work one on one with a fitter to dial-in your next set of clubs, DTC probably isn’t right for you. The draw of DTC offerings is usually the price and a more personal experience with the brand. It’s also true that while fitting has the potential to help improve your game, not every golfer wants to get fitted.

First Look: Proto Concept CO3 TC Iron Review

The only thing Lydia Ko and I have in common is that we both routinely play Proto Concept irons. Other than that, she’s a world-class professional golfer that Proto Concept can point to as evidence that its irons meet the demands of the most discerning players.

And I’m a guy with a penchant for Japanese gear with two, Wednesday night Men’s League championships on my resume. Impressive, I know.

With that, if you’re looking for a quintessential players cavity back iron, the new Proto Concept C03TC is one that more than just the JDM faithful should have on the demo shortlist.

Ok, it’s pricey ($350/head) and not readily available (such is the reality of niche Japanese forgings) but hear me out.

Proto Concept Refresher

At the risk of redundancy, Proto Concept isn’t as recognized as Japanese Domestic Market stalwarts (JDM) Miura, EPON, or Yonex. Yet. Shifting dynamics of the global equipment market is a good bit of the story, but that’s a rabbit hole for a different day.

Thursday At The PGA: Bryson's Back, Cole Grabs Late Lead, Kim Takes A Mud Bath

It was a late bloomer due to a historic frost delay. But round one at Oak Hill finished strong. Bryson stole the show with his presser until Tom Kim got an Allen's Creek mudbath.

My round one PGA Championship report from Rochester.

What to watch for on Friday at the PGA Championship

The 105th PGA Championship is underway at Oak Hill Country Club. Here are the top storylines to look out for in the second round.

A major mess: Kim loses duel with mud at PGA

Even though Tom Kim carded a bogey after his losing battle with the mud on the sixth hole, he said it was all worth it. "I hope everyone at home understands it's a major championship, and I'm trying to play the best that I can and every shot matters."

Bryson breaks out to lead PGA Championship

Bryson DeChambeau has undergone a series of changes that finally led to some positive results at the PGA Championship, as he held an early lead after a 4-under 66.
