Norman's Masters exclusion planned, Ridley says

The decision not to invite Greg Norman to the Masters was made to ensure that attention focused on the tournament and players, not on LIV Golf's ongoing rift with the PGA Tour, Augusta National Golf Club chair Fred Ridley says.

Arccos Driving Distance Report – 2023

How far does the average golfer at your home course hit the ball off the tee?

It depends, right? Age and skill level are the two key criteria. But according to the Arccos 2022 distance report, skill has a greater impact than age.

You’ve likely heard something about the distance rollback proposal announced jointly by the USGA and R&A. If not, here’s the skinny. For their part, the ruling bodies seem intent on leaving the ball alone for recreational golfers, reserving any changes for those who intend on playing in professional events and elite competitions.

I mention that as an important context because while “distance” is routinely part of the equipment dialog, it’s squarely in the crosshairs as the industry prepares for what could become a serious line of demarcation.

That aside, let’s take a closer look at amateur driving distance in 2022.

Ball Lab: Spalding SD Tour

MyGolfSpy Ball Lab is where we quantify the quality and consistency of golf balls. Today, we’re reviewing the Spalding SD Tour. To learn more about our test process, click here.

About the Spalding SD Tour

The SD Tour is one of two urethane-covered golf balls sold under the Spalding brand (the other being the presumably firmer SD Tour X). It caught our attention because the dimple count matched a couple of other interesting balls. Oh, and it also sells for less than $20 per dozen which sounds like a hell of a good deal, especially for golfers looking to save big on golf balls.

Like looks, sounds can sometimes be deceiving.

While it was previously listed on the USGA conforming balls list, the Spalding SD Tour appears to have dropped off. That could suggest the ball is at the end of its life or, at a minimum, the manufacturer, Reliable of Milwaukee, has chosen not to pay the cost of keep the Spalding balls on the list.

Vokey WedgeWorks Limited Edition 64W

It’s early April, which explains why there’s an abundance of limited edition golf gear to celebrate the season’s first major. What differentiates this offering from most everything else is that, while the other stuff is designed to celebrate Augusta National, the Vokey WedgeWorks Limited Editon 64W is designed to help golfers play Augusta National.

A WedgeWorks Tradition

If you’ve kept up with WedgeWorks over the years, you know that the launch of a high loft, low bounce wedge is standard WedgeWorks practice ahead of the Masters. That said, it’s not every year we’re treated to this combination of high loft and low bounce.

The WedgeWorks 64W is roughly 6 degrees stronger than your average kitchen spatula with the same stated bounce as a T Grind.

If nothing else, it sounds like it could be a hell of a lot of fun.

About the Vokey WedgeWorks 64W

Even those of you well-versed in Vokey grinds may not be familiar with the W Grind given that it’s not in the retail lineup.

Monday At The 2023 Masters

I shall never forget my first visit to the property which is now Augusta National. The long lane of magnolias through which we approached was beautiful. The old manor house with its cupola and walls of masonry two feet thick was charming. The rare trees and shrubs of the old nursery were enchanting. But when I walked out on the grass terrace under the big trees behind the house and looked down over the property, the experience was unforgettable It seemed that this land had been lying here for years just waiting for someone to lay a golf course upon it. DeChambeau: No regrets about 'par-67' comment

Bryson DeChambeau clarified you need your "A game" to treat Augusta National as a par-67, something he suggested -- and was criticized for -- in 2020. "Because of that statement, [people] think I don't have respect for the course. Are you kidding me?"
