PING Releases Next Generation of Clubs that Grow with Your Kids

Does your kid need new clubs?

If you’re in the market or might be soon enough, PING has announced the next generation of its Prodi G line of junior golf clubs.

And when I say juniors, I mean kids, not those teenagers generating 115 mph of ball speed.

Rather than offer a fixed set, the Prodi G lineup consists of 10 clubs and two putters. The idea is that you can mix and match as needed to build the perfect set for your junior golfer.

The obvious question is, how do I know what clubs to buy?

#AskAlan: Open Championship Edition

Is Bobby Mac’s win tainted by that very questionable drop that was allowed? Asterisk win in my opinion. @mkloetz

I agree it felt egregious but professional golfers have always been aggressive in taking advantage of the rules. We’re gonna run out of asterisks if we give MacIntyre one and then apply the same smell test to all of his colleagues. Bottom line: The rules can help you as much as they can hurt you. Fans and reporters can kvetch about the spirit of the game but, in general, the pros are less sentimental; they go by the letter of the law. Bobby Mac’s drop was legal and therefore he is unbothered.

Should national opens be separated from tours and handled differently? I just feel that a national open should not be considered a “tour event.“ It tends to denigrate it. @StryderJa39237

I, too, am sentimental about national championships. They have so much history and gravitas. But, in the new golf landscape, I think it helps these proud tournaments to be aligned with a major circuit, specifically the PGA or European Tours. Just look at the better fields and increased buzz and exposure the Scottish Open has enjoyed in the last couple of years after the “strategic alliance” made it a full-blown PGA Tour event. Same goes for the Mexican Open. Conversely, look at how the Australian Open struggles to attract top talent despite its incredible history and venues. I would love to see the PGA and European Tours become more invested in the once-proud Opens that are now languishing, like the Japanese and South African. It would elevate the tournaments and tours.

What needs to happen at the Open to make this an A or A+ major season? Redemption for Rory? Bob wins on home turf? Scottie laps the field? @Q_Brunk

Think SQUARE for Golf Perfection

Golf is an impossible game played with clubs that swing in an arc on terrain that is rarely flat, so how can SQUARE create perfection? As it turns out SQUARE is the new buzzword in golf. And that is why it is so difficult to figure out. We all struggle to create an impact with our golf ball in the split second when our club face is exactly square to the ball.

When you watch a high-speed video of a club impacting a golf ball, you can see that the ball is partially flattened during the point of impact. That flat surface controls the direction of your ball. So your swing path on the flattened surface of your ball is the critical factor in creating a square impact on your ball.

Setup Perfection
Ideally you should setup with a perfectly square alignment (shoulders, hips and toes) on a flat surface with no prevailing wind. Your setup position will create straight hits by using a swing that allows you to follow-through in the direction of your club face. Tiger Woods can actually feel the face of his club throughout his swing as if it’s happening in a super slow motion.

Flatten your leading wrist to close your club face to square at impact.

You will never hit enough golf balls to duplicate the emotions and feel for your swing that Tiger and so many other professional golfers do. But you can learn to setup with your ball in a proper position and hold your club in a square position to your ball so that you can execute your swing to your identical square setup position with the following adjustments:

Adding draw or fade spin only requires a slight adjustment for your club face direction but your impact should still be square to your ball.Identify the best ball position for your natural swing with each of your clubs. Impact the ball before taking any divot or starting your upswing with your driver (off your leading toe).Adjust for wind speed by selecting the correct club to compensate for distance.Modify your stance and shoulders to offset the slope of the ground that you are standing on.Putting is so much easier if as your slow swing is easier to control to impact your ball squarely on the center line of the face of your putter.Choosing the correct target line for each putt is the most critical issue but a SQUARE impact is still the key factor for putting perfection.

Don’t let one hand overpower your swing and cause an early rotation of YOUR SQUARE club face. Build confidence in your swing by practicing these tips with GOLFSTR+ at the driving range. Buy one today at www.GOLFSTR.com

Monday At The 152nd Open

I would even go so far as to say that the links occupy a place as a traditional form of art. But the artifice should be subjected so that it remains hidden. Unnecessary hazards, however prettily they may be shaped, will destroy the unity and harmony of the natural surroundings; they should merge in the fairways as if they had been made for centuries. How Often to Get New Clubs

The frequency of replacing golf clubs can vary depending on several factors, including the golfer's skill level, how often they play, advancements in technology, and personal preferences. Here are some general guidelines to help you determine how often you might need to get new golf clubs:

Factors to Consider

  1. Skill Level:

    • Beginners: May benefit from more frequent upgrades as they improve and understand their equipment needs better.
    • Intermediate and Advanced Players: Might replace clubs less frequently but still want to keep up with advancements in technology.
  2. Frequency of Play:

    • Frequent Players: Those who play several times a week might need to replace their clubs more often due to wear and tear.
    • Occasional Players: Those who play less frequently can usually go longer between replacements.
  3. Technological Advancements:

    • Drivers and Woods: Technological advancements can significantly improve performance. Replacing every 3-5 years is common.
    • Irons and Wedges: These clubs can last longer but may need replacing every 5-7 years, especially if newer technology offers noticeable benefits.
    • Putters: These can last the longest, often up to 10 years or more, unless there is a significant change in personal preference or putting technique.
  4. Condition of Clubs:

ESPN's top 100 professional athletes of the 21st century: Unveiling 76 to 100

Callaway Opus and Opus Platinum Wedges

Guys, the Callaway Opus Wedge is different.

I went back as far as 2011 and couldn’t find a Callaway flagship wedge (CB and SureOut don’t count) where there wasn’t some reference to JAWS, Phil Mickelson or Roger Cleveland – often I found all three.

There’s none of that here. You won’t find PM grinds, Mack Daddy grooves or •R• stamped on the hosel. All of this suggests that, with the launch of the Opus Wedge franchise, comes a significant shift in Callaway wedge design.

That’s reflected in the Opus name which plays to what Callaway says is the beauty and elegance of the new wedges. “Opus” is where art meets science and, while that sounds like a corridor connecting two museums, it speaks to the blending of Callaway technologies with the significantly improved shapes that help define the Opus wedge family.

“Tour-Driven” Opus Wedge Shaping

I’m on record as not being a fan of Callaway wedges. From a shaping perspective, I find the topline too thin, the transition from toe to topline too harsh and angular and, whatever the real-world measurements, the way the offset presents always looked to me, anyway, like the blade and hosel were in different zip codes.

The Most Underrated Golf Ball of 2024

Q: What do you think is the most underrated golf ball?

It would definitely be Maxfli golf balls. That’s an interesting thing.

So Dick’s Sporting Goods actually makes Maxfli golf balls. It’s a house brand. And over the years, house brands haven’t been that great. But in this case, Maxfli is as good as almost any ball you’ll buy, and it’s under 40 dollars.

I mean, Maxfli was super popular back in the day. They came back out under Dick’s Sporting Goods. No one really heard of them and took them serious. But when we did our golf ball robot test, it got our attention for sure.

And then when we brought it back to the ball lab for quality control, not only is it one of the best performing balls, it’s also some of the highest quality control balls.

7 Pitfalls of Custom Golf Club Fitting

The art and science of custom club fitting is imperfect. Fortunately, perfection isn’t required to achieve a decent, if not good, result. That’s why I’m going to start by telling you that, despite the flaws, you absolutely should get custom fitted for your golf clubs – from driver to wedge and even your ball.

At the same time, it’s important to set sensible expectations. The simple truth is this: custom fitting brings with it challenges and pitfalls. They are unavoidable but by acknowledging and understanding them, you might just be able to navigate them and have a better fitting experience.

So with all of that said, as with many things, my best advice is to use your damn head.

Here are seven things to keep in the back of your mind for your next fitting.

There is no right way to fit

Nearly every fitter has a unique approach. Big box and chain fitters often employ fitting systems.
