L.A.B. Golf continues to be one of the hottest putter companies.

No other small putter shop has a growing professional tour presence like L.A.B. Golf. New professionals are putting L.A.B Golf putters in the bag every week. Just a few weeks ago, we saw Will Zalatoris return to the first page of the leaderboard at Riviera with a L.A.B. Golf putter in his bag. If you check his WITB from 2023, you’d find a Cameron in his putter well.

In case you haven’t heard, driving distance has been a major discussion topic within golf over the past few years. 

We have our own opinions for what increased hitting distances mean for the game of golf, but we thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at driving distance numbers in golf’s modern era. 

It’s clear that a mix of better technology, better athletes and more pristine agronomy have paved the way for where we stand now—but how exactly did it evolve to reach this point? 

The Early Years of Recorded Distances

The PGA Tour has kept driving distance stats dating back to 1980 when Dan Pohl led with a 274-yard average. 

While methods for tracking distance have grown more advanced over the years because of ShotLink, the PGA Tour has continued to use only two holes per round to measure driving distance. They are both holes where players are basically guaranteed to be using a driver off the tee.

The Acushnet 2023 Sales and Financial report tells us some fascinating things about how golf’s No. 2 company stacks up against the runaway sales leader, Topgolf Callaway.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that, depending on how you keep score, Acushnet may not be golf’s No. 2 company.

Because, depending on how you keep score, Acushnet could be considered No. 1.

It all depends on which set of top-line numbers you look at and which set of bottom-line numbers you look at. Bigger may not always be better, but it’s always bigger.

If that sounds squirrelly to you, you’re not alone. But before we dig into this all, let’s pause one moment for our traditional sales report disclaimer:

Feel is a difficult word to define for golfers.

Unlike many aspects of golf equipment, feel is subjective and emotional. There is a distinct challenge to pin down what feel means to each person, even for the best players in the world.

If you’re surprised to learn that John Daly is playing Sub 70 irons and wedges on the PGA TOUR Champions circuit, you’re not alone.

The news came as a big surprise to Sub 70 owner Jason Hiland.

“It was at the Champions Tour event at TPC Sugarloaf last spring,” Hiland tells MyGolfSpy. “It’s on Golf Channel and, all of a sudden, my phone starts blowing up. He has our stuff in his bag. I had no idea.”

The story of how Sub 70 irons and wedges made it into Daly’s bag starts with a knee replacement and a chance encounter at the driving range. Maybe the most remarkable aspect of this story is that zero money is changing hands.

That’s right. Daly doesn’t have a contract with Sub 70 and isn’t angling for one. He’s playing Hiland’s gear for one reason and one reason only.

Say what you will about Phil Mickelson—and you can say a lot—but he isn’t boring or conventional.

Neither is the putter he has in the bag during practice this week at LIV Golf’s Jeddah tournament.

The six-time major champion has been spotted testing the LAB Golf DF3 putter, one of the most striking putters in golf. The model recently became available to consumers.

Mickelson’s DF3 is 35 inches with a 71-degree lie angle (press #2, 3-degree grip, TPT shaft).

Mickelson has been partial to blades throughout his career, including when he won the 2021 PGA Championship using an Odyssey “Phil Mickelson” blade prototype with a SuperStroke Pistol GT Tour CounterCore grip.

It’s not hyperbole to say golf is a major commitment. Not only does the sport cost a pretty penny for everything from equipment and apparel to green fees, it also takes up a lot of time. And, after all, time is money.

Both of these barriers to entry are magnified significantly when attempting to play in metropolitan markets like New York City, Chicago and Los Angeles.
