Great Courses in Wisconsin You Haven’t Heard Of

If there is one thing Wisconsin isn’t lacking, it is quality golf courses. The state’s premier courses are mind blowing: Whistling Straits. Erin Hills. Sand Valley. Blackwolf Run. Sentry World. Lawsonia Links. The Bull at Pinehurst Farms.

There’s just one small—well, large—problem. The hefty green fees at these courses prevent most golfers from being able to do anything more than dream about playing them.

Fortunately, we’ve got a list of some great courses that will give you a fantastic experience in the Dairy State at more palatable green fees. If you’re from Wisconsin and arguably the upper Midwest, you may recognize most of these courses. If not, look one or more of them up the next time you’re planning a golf trip to ‘Sconnie.

Northern Wisconsin

Northern Wisconsin is an expansive area that is home to some fantastic courses, public and private. Here are three great options open to public play.

Big Fish Golf Club – Hayward, WI

You’ll find Big Fish Golf Club in the heart of the north woods in Hayward. A Pete Dye design (one of only five in the state), Golf Week magazine ranks it as the 14th-best course in Wisconsin. You’ll find contrasting styles of play between the links style front nine and wooded layout on the back. Big Fish offers four tee boxes, playing to a whopping 7,231 yards at its tournament tees.

Meet The Man Behind Golf’s Coolest Custom Shoes

Any story that starts with caddying for two-time NBA champion Ray Allen is bound to be a good one.

For Roly Padron (known by his Instagram handle, Nomad Customs), it was that fateful meeting that changed his entire life. Funny how life works sometimes.

Before that life-altering loop with Allen, Padron had been quietly honing his craft —turning sneakers into art — for years with little to no recognition.

“As far as customizing the shoes, I’ve always been into art,” said Padron. “I would take a Sharpie and I would change the color of the swoosh on whatever sneaker I had. And I guess that was just a form of expression because everyone had the same shoe. So that’s where it started.”

As most high school students do, Padron didn’t think too much about turning his passion for art into a business. Instead, he focused on impressing friends and fellow sneaker enthusiasts by customizing his shoes to look like unreleased pairs.

PUMA Golf is no stranger to polarizing designs. Have you seen the new PHANTOMCAT Nitro?

But the AVANT? This is not that. Instead, PUMA went back in time to bring us a more classy (and classic) silhouette. From the AVANT wingtip to the saddle-style AVANT, this shoe is the perfect pairing for those baggy J-Day pants.

“The saddle and wingtip styles were a lot of fun to design,” said Andrew Lawson, Senior Product Line Manager, Golf Footwear at PUMA Golf. “We are entering the classics space. A traditional style is a first for us and we are super-thrilled to be part of the action. We want to serve the golfer. We have been listening and are excited to deliver this trend to our golf consumer.”

We Asked 100 Golfers Their Thoughts on Sun Day Red

What are your thoughts on Sun Day Red?

The polarizing topic has finally made its way to our new series. Yes, it’s time to poll golfers and get real, raw feedback on Tiger Woods’ new clothing line.

Past explorations have included Kirkland Golf Clubs and 2024 Drivers. Now, we asked 100 golfers to share their thoughts on Sun Day Red.

As a reminder, this survey is not designed to be generalized to a larger population. Instead, it gives us a quick and easy way to get a pulse on how golfers feel about certain topics. In this case, it gives us some small insights into how people view Sun Day Red. With a sample size this small, it’s key that we don’t take this feedback as indicative of the overall community.

If you’re looking for more detailed thoughts and opinions, you can check out my op-ed on the topic.

Grace Kim More Prepared for the Grind in Sophomore Season on LPGA

Grace Kim needed just three events to record her first LPGA victory but the 23-year-old Australian needed an entire season to adjust to life on Tour.

After edging out Yu Liu and Yu Jin Sung in a one-hole playoff for the Lotte Championship on April 12 in Hawaii, the rookie failed to make the cut in the next two events—Chevron Championship and JM Eagle LA Championship—before a T10 finish at the Cognizant Founders Cup on May 11.

The up-and-down trend would continue the rest of the year as Kim quickly learned as much about the grind on the LPGA as she did her own abilities and limitations.

“I think I’ve got a good taste of what it’s like to be a Tour player and that leads to having better expectations performance-wise,” Kim said. “I’ll be taking a big break in the middle, hopefully, this year to reset and restart for the second half of the season because it seemed like the second half of last season my stamina was a little low just to even play week-in week-out due to the physicality and endurance of playing the entire season.”

Despite finishing 14th and T13 at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and U.S. Women’s Open, respectively, and 11th at the Dana Open, Kim failed to make the cut in three out of the next five events.

Testers Wanted: TaylorMade TP5/TP5X Golf Balls

This seems to be the year of new golf balls! We are certainly not complaining, though. Along with some other major brands submitting their new golf balls for Forum member testing, we now have the opportunity to get the new TaylorMade TP5 and TP5X into the hands of our testers to see how they really perform.

What’s changed?

TaylorMade has revamped their TP5 and TP5X models after pumping $100 million into their golf ball-related business. This went into several key areas, including buying the Nassau ball plant in South Korea and a huge investment in R&D. Over the last three years, TaylorMade has built a new state-of-the-art indoor test range and completely remade its outdoor test area with Trackman units to capture performance data for every stage of ball flight at its headquarters in Carlsbad, Calif.

The new TP5 and TP5X have Speed-Wrap, a new technology that TaylorMade claims produces “significantly faster with a better feel and a softer feel.” This is done by allowing the material to control the sound without affecting speed. As sound often directly relates to feel, the new TP5 and TP5X can be firmer balls without feeling or sounding firm.

Finally, the initial three layers are now progressively firmer, allowing them to “truly perform like completely different products.”

The bottom line is that TaylorMade feels they have really upped their standards with their new golf ball lineup. Being a distant third in market share to Callaway and the far-and-away leader Titleist, TaylorMade hopes the new TP5 and TP5X will be their launch pad to further success.
