How to Lower your Handicap

Lowering your golf handicap is a common goal among golfers, indicating an improvement in skill and consistency. Here are some strategies and tips to help you lower your handicap:

  1. Quality Practice: Focus on deliberate practice rather than just hitting balls. Spend time on specific areas of your game, particularly those that are weaknesses. Utilize practice facilities to work on driving, chipping, and putting.

  2. Take Lessons: A professional golf instructor can provide invaluable advice tailored to your specific needs. They can identify and help correct flaws in your swing, stance, grip, and overall approach.

  3. Improve Your Short Game: Many strokes can be saved around the green. Spend more time practicing putting and chipping. These shots make up a significant portion of your game.

  4. Course Management: Learn to play smarter, not just harder. This includes understanding when to take risks and when to play conservatively, choosing the right club for the situation, and knowing how to read the course and conditions.

Testers Wanted: Callaway White Box Testing

Testers Wanted!

Callaway has come a long way with their golf balls in recent years, putting a focus on quality and overall improvement throughout their entire line. During the 2023 MyGolfSpy Golf Ball Test, the Callaway Chrome Soft X was in the top three for high swing speed golfers looking for a high-spin golf ball and was a good fit for those looking to lower their ball flight. The Chrome Soft X was rated as one of the fastest balls for high-speed players.

It was not just in high-speed testing that various Callaway golf balls performed well. The Chrome Soft was recognized as an ideal choice in other categories for both low and mid swing speeds. Callaway was complimented for making great strides since the previous golf ball test.

There is a new ball coming from Callaway and we are looking for your feedback!

While we cannot spill any details on what this golf ball is or how it may perform (we will leave that up to you), we are excited to get these into the hands of our testers!

Do you want to be a tester for this Callaway “white box” testing opportunity?

10 must-play courses within 50 miles of NYC

New York City has some great golf courses you can book and play within easy reach of Manhattan. Here’s our guide. In terms of private clubs where members and their guests can play, the city is close to some legendary venues such as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links of America, Winged Foot and Oak Hill Country Club. For those visiting the city, you can also get to some world-class public-access courses easily within a couple of hours. Here’s what we think are the best.

Located in Long Island close to New York City, Bethpage is home to five of the best public golf courses in the United States including the world famous Bethpage Black, one of the most notoriously difficult courses in the country. Black has hosted the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship and will host the 2025 Ryder Cup.

The best of the other courses, Yellow, Green, Blue and Red, is probably the Red course. More suited to a higher handicap than Black, this course deserves to step out of the shadow of its illustrious neighbour with many believing it to be just as good.

Jack Nicklaus Signature Design links course in the Bronx which was built on top of an old garbage dump. Formerly known as Trump Golf Links and opened in 2014, this is anything but trash. There’s stunning views of the famous New York skyline and it’s just minutes from Manhattan. At the foot of the Whitestone Bridge, where New York’s East River meets the Long Island Sound, this is a tournament worthy links with rolling mounds of fescue alongside pristine fairways and greens with a state-of-the-art 20,000 square foot clubhouse.

A Pete Dye design 40 miles northeast of Manhattan with perfectly manicured undulating fairways and greens. One of the most beautiful courses in the state, there’s woods, wetlands, water hazards, rocks and boulders with expansive views of the surrounding countryside from the highest points. Though it’s public-access, it feels and plays like a high-end private club and it’s a tranquil escape from the big city.

JUST DROPPED: Air Jordan 1 Low G

The most anticipated golf sneaker drop of the early season has arrived. Act fast, these shoes won’t sit for long. The Air Jordan 1 Low G has received a stylish makeover and is available now in three new colorways.

Worn on Tour by the likes of Tony Finau, Nelly Korda and (sometimes) Justin Rose, the Air Jordan 1 Low G is the hottest sneaker-style golf shoe on the market. And, if early reactions are any indication, these simple, subtle colorways are bound to sell out quick.

jQuery( document ).ready( function( $ ) { var slides = $( '#mgs_gallery_65ac157214801 .mgs-gallery-images .mgs-gallery-image' ).length; if ( slides 6 ) { slides = 6; } $( '#mgs_gallery_65ac157214801 .mgs-gallery-images' ).slick( { slidesToShow: 1, slidesToScroll: 1, fade: true, prevArrow: '', nextArrow: '', asNavFor: '#mgs_gallery_65ac157214801 .mgs-gallery-thumbs', swipe: false, mobileFirst: true, } ); $( '#mgs_gallery_65ac157214801 .mgs-gallery-thumbs' ).slick( { slidesToShow: ( slides - 1 ), //less than number of slides, so it always shows infinite scroll (bugfix) slidesToScroll: 1, arrows: false, asNavFor: '#mgs_gallery_65ac157214801 .mgs-gallery-images', centerMode: true, focusOnSelect: true, infinite: true, mobileFirst: true, responsive: [ { breakpoint: 1023, settings: { slidesToShow: 3, }, }, { breakpoint: 600, settings: { slidesToShow: 1, }, }, ], } ); $( '#mgs_gallery_65ac157214801' ).magnificPopup( { delegate: '.mgs-gallery-trigger', type: 'image', gallery: { enabled: true, arrowMarkup: '', }, } ); } );

Each shoe features a waterproof leather upper, the iconic Jordan Jumpman logo on the tongue and the Wings logo on the heel. All sit atop a new gum outsole complete with a beefed up traction pattern that’s nearly identical to the OG Air Jordan 1.

I’ll say it again: if you’re on the fence, just take the plunge. I rock a pair of these to work (and to the range) on a weekly basis and let’s just say, I’m going to be snagging all three colors to rock and stock.

Ball Lab: Kirkland Performance+ V3

MyGolfSpy Ball Lab is where we quantify the quality and consistency of golf balls. Today, we’re reviewing the 2023 Kirkland Performance+ V3. To learn more about our test process, click here.

About the Kirkland Performance+ V3

What better time than now to take a look at the newest ball from the Kirkland Signature Performance series as it comes on the heels of a new driver and new iron set released by Costco’s golf division in mid-December?

This ball is available in two-dozen, 24-count packages which may be appealing to those golfers playing courses with impenetrable jungles out-of-bounds and/or water hazards on every hole.

The Kirkland Signature ball can be classified as a mid-high launch, high-spin ball. We certainly experienced this during our 2023 Golf Ball test.

The Kirkland Performance+ V3 is produced in Vietnam in the SM Parker factory that makes the PXG Xtreme ball.
