Defending Masters champ Scottie Scheffler's blandness is by design

When it comes to green jacket recipients, Scottie Scheffler might seem, well, boring. His inner circle insists there's a method to the defending champ's monotony.

Vokey WedgeWorks Limited Edition 64W

It’s early April, which explains why there’s an abundance of limited edition golf gear to celebrate the season’s first major. What differentiates this offering from most everything else is that, while the other stuff is designed to celebrate Augusta National, the Vokey WedgeWorks Limited Editon 64W is designed to help golfers play Augusta National.

A WedgeWorks Tradition

If you’ve kept up with WedgeWorks over the years, you know that the launch of a high loft, low bounce wedge is standard WedgeWorks practice ahead of the Masters. That said, it’s not every year we’re treated to this combination of high loft and low bounce.

The WedgeWorks 64W is roughly 6 degrees stronger than your average kitchen spatula with the same stated bounce as a T Grind.

If nothing else, it sounds like it could be a hell of a lot of fun.

About the Vokey WedgeWorks 64W

Even those of you well-versed in Vokey grinds may not be familiar with the W Grind given that it’s not in the retail lineup.

Monday At The 2023 Masters

I shall never forget my first visit to the property which is now Augusta National. The long lane of magnolias through which we approached was beautiful. The old manor house with its cupola and walls of masonry two feet thick was charming. The rare trees and shrubs of the old nursery were enchanting. But when I walked out on the grass terrace under the big trees behind the house and looked down over the property, the experience was unforgettable It seemed that this land had been lying here for years just waiting for someone to lay a golf course upon it. DeChambeau: No regrets about 'par-67' comment

Bryson DeChambeau clarified you need your "A game" to treat Augusta National as a par-67, something he suggested -- and was criticized for -- in 2020. "Because of that statement, [people] think I don't have respect for the course. Are you kidding me?"

Answering the biggest questions ahead of the 2023 Masters

Can Scottie Scheffler do it again? Will Tiger contend? Who else should we be paying attention to? We answer all the big questions ahead of the Masters.

Snell MTB Prime and MTB Prime X Golf Balls

It’s next to impossible to identify the current top-selling direct-to-consumer golf ball brand but I don’t think it’s a stretch to suggest it was Snell Golf that was first to effectively reach the masses with the message that golfers don’t need to pay big OEM prices for quality performance golf balls.

Spoiler alert: That’s still true with the new Snell MTB Prime and MTB Prime X golf balls. We’ll get to those in a minute but feel free to skip ahead if you’re not interested in how we got here.

Kicking in the door for DTC ball brands

Dean Snell’s pedigree as a co-inventor of the Pro V1 and numerous TaylorMade golf ball technologies brought credibility that others in the DTC space lacked–and the market was ready.

Timing, as they say, is everything. “We stepped into it at a decent time and created a niche,” says Snell.

Whether Snell is the largest DTC brand, I can’t say. That it’s beloved by many golfers for its quality products and sensible prices is inarguable.

Sweet Rose In Augusta

The Masters has a great many things going for it, some planned and some fortuitous. It is played on a superb and scenic course that inspires the fine field of players to spectacular feats and offers singularly good vantage points for spectators. It is held at a wonderful time of year, when practically every golfer, after a long hibernation, finds his fancy turning to thoughts of supinating the left forearm or some other such crucial action that will make the season at hand the big one he has been waiting for.
