Who can win the men's golf gold, who can medal and who should just be happy to be at the Olympics

It's a small field, one reduced by the late, forced withdrawals of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau. So who can take home gold? Who else will be in medal contention? Who should just enjoy the Olympic experience?

California Winning – Celebrating our Champions 2021

Celebrating our Champions

This summer we saw some impressive victories across our top women’s competitions. Congratulations to the winners!

NCGA Women’s Amateur – Annika Borelli

Alamo resident Annika Borrelli failed to get through a U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier. The poor results literally left her in tears. Among those consoling her was her dad, Dave, and her coach at the University of San Francisco, Sara Doell. “After talking with my coach, she just told me to remember to have fun out there. Not to press early,” said Borrelli, a senior on the USF women’s golf squad.

Borrelli took the piece of wisdom and ran with it, as she’d go on to post a wire-to-wire win at the annual NCGA Women’s Amateur Championship.

“Coming into this event, my mindset was to have fun. To just enjoy the moment,” Borrelli said.

Winning Ways – 2021

Winning Ways – Celebrating our Local Champions

As we wind down this 2020 golf season, we can certainly reflect on the new landscape of golf amid this year of Coronavirus.  Golf courses were closed, events were canceled, safety measures changed the way we played – but we still managed to play some tournament golf!

Let’s acknowledge some of the Tournament winners this season:

PWGA Legacy Senior and Super Senior Championship

What a great return to tournament golf we had with our first PWGA Legacy event of the 2021 season on
May 3 & 4. We filled the tournament with 196 women. This Championship has been played since 1960.
Once called the Grandmothers Tournament, we draws players up and above age 80. This year we had
11 players over 80 years young. The courses at Greenhorn Creek and Copper Valley gave us a warm
welcome and we certainly enjoyed the box lunch at Copper Valley after the second round.
Congratulations to our winners:
Senior Division: Low Gross: Jennifer Douglas – Low Net: Anne Bianchi
Super Senior Division: Low Gross: Kay Robinson – Low Net: Heidi Russell

We Tried It: Evnroll CustomER Putter Designer

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried

Evnroll CustomER Custom Putter Program, Evnroll’s new online custom V-Series putter design interface.

Dave Wolfe – MyGolfSpy writer and putter fanatic. I’ve tested hundreds (maybe thousands) of flatsticks.

Evnroll’s CustomER Putter Designer

It should come as no surprise that the Evnroll CustomER putter designer is focused on the customER. Now you see what they did there with that name, don’t you? I’ll be honest. I missed it at first pass, having just focused on how the “ER” part referenced their putter models. So much for me being obsERvant.

Top U.S. Golf Courses By Region – Southwest

Top U.S. Golf Courses by Region

Fundamentally, ranking golf courses is a subjective exercise. Better players often prefer more challenging layouts. Less skilled golfers might appreciate wider fairways with fewer forced carries.

That said, the validity of any individual review isn’t tied to whether that golfer has a degree in golf course architecture or a preference for certain types of grasses.

If you’re a golfer, your opinion matters.

To build our list of the best golf destinations, we turned to TheGrint and to real golfers just like you.

ABOUT THEGRINT’S RANKINGS

To generate our rankings, we leveraged data from TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat-tracking service that also allows golfers to rate the courses they play. Think of it as something similar to Yelp for golf courses.

History’s Mysteries: The Demise of MacGregor Golf

Welcome to the first official installment of what we at MyGolfSpy hope will become a favorite of yours: History’s Mysteries.

It’s easy to care only about today. But historical perspective helps us connect certain dots while disconnecting others. By peering through the lens of time, we can better understand just why the golf industry is the way it is and how it got here.

Our first subject is, next to Wilson Staff, the most iconic name in golf’s long, fascinating history: MacGregor Golf.

History’s Mysteries: MacGregor Golf

Wilson Staff famously touts more majors won than any other brand. Their total of 62 is mostly frontloaded but it is an impressive number.

But did you know MacGregor is No. 2 with 59?

Cameron Champ Gets Third PGA Tour Victory

Cameron Champ Gets Third PGA Tour Victory

July 25, 2021

Cameron Champ fended off dehydration and crisply putted his way to a 5-under 66 on Sunday, winning the 3M Open by two strokes for his third career PGA TOUR victory.

The 26-year-old Champ, of Sacramento, had five birdies in a bogey-free round to finish at 15-under 269 at TPC Twin Cities. Louis Oosthuizen, Jhonattan Vegas and Charl Schwartzel tied for second.

Oosthuizen shot 66, too, in a much stronger finish than the previous weekend at the Open Championship, where his 54-hole lead turned into a tie for third after a fourth-round 71.

Playing six pairs ahead of Champ, Oosthuizen birdied three of the last four holes to give himself an outside chance. His approach to the 18th green almost yielded an eagle on the PGA TOUR’s hardest par-5 hole, but the ball lipped out. He made a 2 1/2 foot putt for birdie instead. Schwartzel, his fellow South African, posted a 68 to match Vegas in the final round.

2021 Kyoei K1 Heritage Blade Iron

KYOEI is on a tear!  This is their fourth release in less than two months!  It started with the KCM Heritage blade,  yes that beautiful raw grain black dye finished muscle back iron,  then their new mold RRC wedge which is their new S25C player’s wedge,  then the new  2021 Heritage cavity back iron, and now we are proud to introduce the 2021 K1 Heritage series blade!  One of their blades is based on the KCM mold, raw grain in black, and the other one is based on the K1 mold, smooth polished in NiCr chrome satin-finished in-house at the KYOEI factory!

Why two blades?  It’s hard to deny JDM fans of the original KCM mold,  it’s got tour victories and has been used across multiple JDM brands over the years with only success.  At the same time, the K1 blade has historical meaning plus PGA tour victories and has been used countless times over the decades. The K1 has a thinner topline and less offset mold vs mold although both can be ground to meet any player’s needs.

The two are also differentiated by the finish.  Some people don’t want their irons to patina,  some want that smooth-looking no-fuss soft nickel chrome plating that KYOEI is famous for.

When it comes to mold characteristics the K1 not only has a thinner sole, topline with less offset but it has a more shallow face and it’s slightly longer heel to toe.  We like this a lot because it supports forgiveness and a high launch to help balls drop dead near the pin with ease.

The specs also support accuracy with traditional lofts.  That’s right the #5 is 38* and the PW comes in at 48*.  Face progression is the way Japan measures offset,  it can be confusing to those new to JDM gear but simply put 5.5 is no offset while 6.0 leans toward onset.  Please keep in mind the neck taper and angle which is not offset can have an impact on how the appearance of offset plays visually.  If you look at the specifications the #8, #9, and PW all have 6.0 face progression.
