Who the hell is Hank Lebioda?

Fair question.

Lebioda made the jump to the PGA TOUR in 2020 but apart from a few of top-20s, he hadn’t made much noise. Before today, you might not have heard his name which means you probably didn’t know that he was one of the early adopters of the T100.

A Swing Fix May NOT Be Right for Everyone

Watching The Open Championship I was drawn to the variety of golf swings by the leading contenders. It really did remind me that there is no such thing as a perfect golf swing. Each of the leaders have adopted a swing that works for themselves. That’s exactly the reason why you should try unique swing features that work for each of the top golf performers.

Luke Kerr-Dineen wrote an article about Marcel Siem (golfer from Germany) who lost his winning ways when he tried to copy Dustin Johnson’s dramatically bowed wrist at the top of his swing. Marcel was looking for more distance but he lost control of his direction. He recently changed back to a slightly cupped wrist to turn his game around and ended up tied 15th at The Open. Siem, who played his best golf with a cupped leading wrist and open clubface at the top of his backswing, similar to Webb Simpson, was trying to adopt something on the other end of the spectrum and it didn’t work. Referring to his attempted change to a bowed wrist at the top of his swing he said: “I was top 50 in the world…and lost my card. That was the worst decision I ever made in my life.”

Here is a list of changes that you may want to try:
1/ Slow Backswing: Hideki Matsuyama had a very slow backswing and has now been speeding it up to a more conventional backswing. The winner of The Open this year, Collin Morikawa, was the only player who starts his swing with a very slow takeaway and then speeds it up as his club travels to the transition. He seems to be searching for the perfect arm and body location before he accelerates to the top.

2/ Bowed Wrist: Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Jon Rahm and even Jordan Spieth use different levels of a leading bowed wrist at the top of their swing. They all hold this bent wrist through the point of impact. They all use their hip and body rotation to square up the face of their club at the point of impact.

For recreational golfers, Hank Haney suggests using a flat wrist at the top to avoid angles and to improve direction control. Pictured here is Web Simpson with a cupped wrist, Rory McIlroy with a neutral flat wrist and Dustin Johnson with a bowed wrist.

3/ Wide Takeway and Shallowing the Downswing from the Top: Rory McIlroy is not leading the field in wins but he has a beautiful style similar to Adam Scott. I prefer this swing as it stops you from coming over the top and slicing the ball. Jim McLean loves to teach this swing as you start to open your hip and then swing up the inside slot to hit the inside quadrant of your ball.

Exploring Sub 70 Putters

Sub 70 putters are all fully CNC milled from carbon steel billets. The line features popular head styles all finished in black PVD.Prices range from $149 to $179.

Did you know there is a golf company that is making fully milled putters for less than $200?

Sound impossible? Well, Sub 70 is doing just that.

While other companies’ fully milled offerings consistently break the $400 mark, Sub 70 putters somehow cost about half of that.

For me, this raises a bunch of questions.

First, are these putters as good as other milled putters? Do they use cheaper materials and manufacturing? Does Sub 70’s direct-to-consumer model allow them to bypass costs that the larger OEMs all pay? Are these putters that people would actually want to have in their bags?

Rory McIlroy isn't hiding his Olympics reluctance

Rory McIlroy is just being honest. He doesn't really want to be at the Olympics. He's there for the good of the sport -- and hoping maybe for the good of his own game.

Who can win the men's golf gold, who can medal and who should just be happy to be at the Olympics

It's a small field, one reduced by the late, forced withdrawals of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau. So who can take home gold? Who else will be in medal contention? Who should just enjoy the Olympic experience?

California Winning – Celebrating our Champions 2021

Celebrating our Champions

This summer we saw some impressive victories across our top women’s competitions. Congratulations to the winners!

NCGA Women’s Amateur – Annika Borelli

Alamo resident Annika Borrelli failed to get through a U.S. Women’s Amateur qualifier. The poor results literally left her in tears. Among those consoling her was her dad, Dave, and her coach at the University of San Francisco, Sara Doell. “After talking with my coach, she just told me to remember to have fun out there. Not to press early,” said Borrelli, a senior on the USF women’s golf squad.

Borrelli took the piece of wisdom and ran with it, as she’d go on to post a wire-to-wire win at the annual NCGA Women’s Amateur Championship.

“Coming into this event, my mindset was to have fun. To just enjoy the moment,” Borrelli said.

Winning Ways – Celebrating our Local Champions

As we wind down this 2020 golf season, we can certainly reflect on the new landscape of golf amid this year of Coronavirus.  Golf courses were closed, events were canceled, safety measures changed the way we played – but we still managed to play some tournament golf!

Let’s acknowledge some of the Tournament winners this season:

PWGA Legacy Senior and Super Senior Championship

What a great return to tournament golf we had with our first PWGA Legacy event of the 2021 season on

We Tried It: Evnroll CustomER Putter Designer

There is a lot of cool gear in the golf equipment world that doesn’t always fit neatly into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

What We Tried

Evnroll CustomER Custom Putter Program, Evnroll’s new online custom V-Series putter design interface.

Your Custom Builder

Dave Wolfe – MyGolfSpy writer and putter fanatic. I’ve tested hundreds (maybe thousands) of flatsticks.

Evnroll’s CustomER Putter Designer

It should come as no surprise that the Evnroll CustomER putter designer is focused on the customER. Now you see what they did there with that name, don’t you? I’ll be honest. I missed it at first pass, having just focused on how the “ER” part referenced their putter models. So much for me being obsERvant.

Top U.S. Golf Courses By Region – Southwest

Top U.S. Golf Courses by Region

Fundamentally, ranking golf courses is a subjective exercise. Better players often prefer more challenging layouts. Less skilled golfers might appreciate wider fairways with fewer forced carries.

That said, the validity of any individual review isn’t tied to whether that golfer has a degree in golf course architecture or a preference for certain types of grasses.

If you’re a golfer, your opinion matters.

To build our list of the best golf destinations, we turned to TheGrint and to real golfers just like you.

ABOUT THEGRINT’S RANKINGS

To generate our rankings, we leveraged data from TheGrint, a golf handicap and stat-tracking service that also allows golfers to rate the courses they play. Think of it as something similar to Yelp for golf courses.
